MATCH SCRATCHER.

Be it known that l, JOHN N. DELL, a citizen of Jugo-Slavia, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented a new and useful Match Scratcher, of which the following is a specification in such full and clear terms as will enable those skilled in the art to construct and use the same.

This invention relates to a match scratcher and its object is to produce a device upon which matches may be ignited which will be lire proof and which will at the same time prevent danger from having the walls or woodwork defaced or burnt from the match llame.

Another object of the invention is to produce a match scratcher which will not become dirty and unsightly when repeatedly used.

Other objects of the invention will appear as the description proceeds.

An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings in which the same reference numeral is applied to the same portion throughout, but I am aware that there may be modifications thereof.

The match scratcher consists initially of a fiat metal plate 1. This plate has two perforated ears 2 and 3 for securing it to the wall or woodwork. It is also provided with an elongated slot 4 through which the match is placed to ignite it upon the screen 5.

At the ends of the plate 1 there are four projecting tabs 6 to 9 inclusive which are bentover on the wire screen 5 to hold it in place. When the tabs 6 to 9 inclusive are cut at the same time there are four smaller projecting tabs 10 to 13 inclusive formed at the corners of the plate thus produced. Then the tabs 6 to 9 inclusive have been folded over on the wire and flattened tightly against the same, the plate is rolled up to form an open ended cylinder as indicated at 14 in Figure 7 and finally the ears 2 and 3 are bent to extend tangentially to the cylinder and the tabs 10 and 11 as well as the tabs 12 and 13 are bent so they project forwardly over the top of the cylinder. The result of the foregoing construction is that the cylinder 14 when secured to a wall or to the house woodwork presents to the observer an elongated slot through which the screen 5 is visible. i

The match is struck upon the screen and as the screen is open at the back, any dirt that may drop off the match passes through the screen and does not remain on the match scratcher continuously since each time a match is scratched upon it the remains of previous match heads are scraped off. lt is also to be noted that any flash or flame will be prevented from reaching the wall or woodwork by the tabs 10 to 13 inclusive which are inclined over the ends of the open cylinder.

Vhat I claim is as follows, but various modifications may be made in the construction shown in the drawings and above particularly described form, within the purview of my invention.

A match scratcher comprising an open ended cylinder having an elongated slot, a screen abrading surfacewithin the cylinder to enable matches to be lighted thereon through the slot, perforated ears extending laterally from the cylinder to connect the same to a suitable support, and upwardly projecting ears at the top and bottom of the cylinder to direct sparks from the matches struck away from the scratcher support.
