v HMPROYEMENT IN COTTON-PRESSES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,517, dated September 2, 1873; application filed June 20, 1873.

To all whom it mag/concern Be it known that I, MICHAEL M. SGEERER, of Batesville, in the county of Independence `and State of Arkansas, have invented a new The invention relates to preparing cotton for market after it leaves the gin; and consists in certain features of improvement which will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.

In the drawing, A represents the lint-chamber, wherein the cottonis received as it com es from the gin, and B af vertically-slidin g gravitating cover, which has tongues b that slide a is a bar at which the slots end, and beyondwhich the follower cannot go. A is the door hinged at the top and opening upwardly to allow ingress to the cotton. When the cover is thus brought to the limit of its downward movement there remains thereundena space that is iilled with the packed cotton which is now ready to undergo compression into the bale-form. C is the follower that moves horizontally in the space under the cover B, supported ou the outside by wheeled carriages that move in a recess Ior guide-groove on each side of pressbox, carries the cotton to the press-box l), and gives it the shape and compression desired. The front end of the follower C forms one side of the press-box, and has grooves c that correspond with grooves d on the opposite side of said press-box. The end pieces ofthe pressbox are also hinged and fastened on the door by metallic frames that fit over the lower ends of the said end pieces, and the whole is locked together by hinged metallic straps. While the bale is held by the follower G the hinged top and bottom are opened, the bale-tie or ties pressed through grooves c d, and the cotton securely bound. The follower then retires and allows the bale to drop out. In order to withdraw the cover B I use cords or ropes attached to the ends of tongues l), and passing over pulleys at the outside of the corners of the top of lint-room, winding them up by a windlass vattached to said lint-room.

For operating the press-follower C in baling the cotton I use slottedpieces E E connected with levers F F, and pivoted in the corners of the press-box by intermediate straps pivoted to each. G G are subjacent friction-rolls journaled in brackets on the levers, and traveling on circular guides H., I I are cords, ropes, or chains, which connect the levers with the vertical windlass J that winds them up.

By this construction I form a combined lintchamber and cotton-press which prepares the cotton for market very eftectually, very economically, and with great rapidity.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The lint-room A having a vertically-sliding gravitating cover, B, in combination with the door and press-box, of which latter, during the pressing operation, the gravitating cover forms a part, substantially as described.

2. The combination of the windlass, ropes, and pulleys with the gravitatingcover B of lint-room A, as and for the purpose specified.

-3. The follower C supported at its end outside the press-box by wheeled carriages in combination with the windlass for moving the follower in a backward and the toggle-levers for moving'it in a forward direction, substantially as described.

4. The bale-box composed of the iixed hinged top and bottom and hinged end pieces, thel latter being fastened by metal frames on the door fitting over the lower ends ofthe end pieces, and the whole locked together by the hinged metal straps, as and for the purpose speciiied.
