IMPROVEMENT IN APPARATUS FOR IRONING ANEI PRESSING GARMENTS. I

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,516, dated September 2, 1873 application filed July 14, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ROBERT BELL SAN- soN, of London, Great Britain, have invented certain Improvements in Improved Apparatus for Pressing, Smoothing, and Finishing Garments or Parts of Garments, of which the following is a specification:

The first part of my invention relates to an improved arrangement in the swivel -.frame carrying the iron, and which I have mounted with two anti-friction rollers, thefront end of the swivel-frame having a crane-like projection for the purpose of reducin g the strain or bending action on the guide-rod of the smoothing-iron, and at the same giving more room for the garment, the back end of the swivelframe being provided with an adjusting screw or center, which abuts upon a quadrant on the stretcher-frame when the pressure is given upon the pressing-board. Again, between the two uprights of the swivel-frame is cast or fixed a rod or strut to prevent the springing or breaking of the swivel-frame when great pressure iszgiven. A stretcher-frame connecting the two standards has a pin fitted to it for the swivel-frame. Being between the points of support of the board a greater range of movement is given to the iron than by the old plan of having the pin fixed on the standard direct at the side on the plane of the lift- Each standard contains levers and links for raising the pressing-board.

The second part of my invention relates to a novel arrangement of part-s, whereby the pressing-board employed for the purpose of pressing, smoothing, and finishing garments or parts of garments is made to lift parallel in its vertical movement when acted upon by a treadle and a combination of links and levers, so that the smoothingiron employed is brought to bear equally upon the whole surface, and which I accomplish by providing a double set of levers and links connected with one trcadle, so that both ends of the board are acted upon simultaneously and rise together.

The third part of my invention relates to an improvement in the smoothingiron, which is heated by small jets of gas burning upward in the interior, and is provided with a ventilater, arranged in a novel manner hereinafter described, and

The fourth part of my invention relates to I the general construction and arrangement of my improved pressing and. finishingapparatus.

In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a machine embodying myimprovements. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan, showing the top of the machine.

A is the pressing-board, which is raised parallel and vertically by means of the levers b b c 0 and treadle d. The swivel-frame works on an axis carrying the guide-rod f and. iron G. The end of the' swivel-frame is provided with an arm, h, and regulating-screw t, which bears on a quadrant, k, on the stretcher-frame when any pressure is given on the treadle. Between the uprights of swivel-frame is the strut l to prevent any springing or breaking when great pressure is given. The front end of swivel-frame has a crane-like projection, m, to prevent any bending of the guide-rod and to give more room to the garment. The iron G has a ventilator, n, with horizontal apertures for the purpose of carrying off the vitiated air instead of the ordinary vertical chimney, as hitherto used.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In combination with the swivel-frame c and reciprocating bar f carrying the smoothing-iron, the anti-friction rollers W, as and for the purpose described.

2. The employment, in connection with the presser -board and treadle, of the two sets or series of operating levers and links, arranged as described, for the purpose of securing parallelism of said presser-board in its vertical movement, as set forth.

3. In combination with the iron G, the ventiiator a, when arranged in the manner and for the purpose substantially as described.
