Description

T. HYATT.
Walls for Buildings.
Patented September 2,1873.
INVENTD a.
UNITED STATES PATENT Crrxon THEODORE HYATT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN WALLS FOR BUlLDlNGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,474, dated September 2, 1873; application filed August 21, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEODORE HYATT, of New York city, in the county of New York and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Walls for Buildings; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical central section of a portion of a wall constructed in accordance with my improved method, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
The design of my invention is to enable the interior walls of buildings to be constructed of or from plastic material in such a manner as to insure strength, rigidity, and durability; to which end it consists in a wall composed of plastic material, consisting of combined asbestus and earthy matter placed upon each side of corrugated wire-gauze, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
In the annexed drawing, A represents a sheet of wire-gauze, corrugated so as to form a series of right angled ridges and furrows, a and a, respectively, which latter preferably have a depth just equal to their width. Upon the wire gauze frame thus constructed is placed suitable plastic material, B, composed of asbcstus combined with earthy matter,
which is caused to till the channels a and the interstices of the gauze, and to extend upon each side horizontally beyond the surface of the ridges a to a sufficient distance to insure solidity.
If desired, reticulated sheet metal may be employed in place of the wire-gauze.
This wall may be either constructed in position within a house, or it may be constructed in sections of any desired size, and the latter joined together so as to form a wall having the required shape and dimensions; but in either event the result is the production of a wall which is homogeneous in all of its parts; is strong, rigid, and durable; is a good nonconductor of heat, entirely fire-proof, and costs less than the ordinary studdin g, lath, and plaster wall.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new is- A wall composed of plastic material, consisting of ashestus combined with earthy matter, placed upon both sides of corrugated wiregauze, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 19th day of August, 1873.
THEODORE HYATT.
