To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LESLIE SPENCER lVILLIAMs and BEvIE KERR, citizens of the United States, residing at Wichita Falls, in the county of Wichita and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spark Plugs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an attachment for spark plugs, and has for its object to provide an attachment capable of being readily applied to the conventional types of spark plugs and arran ed to permita draft of air to enter the spar: plug to prevent the accumulation of carbon, oil or foreign matter contained in.the porcelain core or the electrodes.
It is another object of the invention to provide an attachment of this character, the operation of which is controlled by the intake stroke of the engine piston to cause air to pass through the attachment into the spark plug and wherein said attachment is operated upon the compression stroke of the engine to prevent the escape of air from the spark plug, the air admitted being discharged upon opening of the exhaust port with the exhaust port of the engine.
It is also an object of the invention to provide an attachment of this character which is held in communication with the spark plug by the means for connecting the spark plug to the engine cylinder.
It is still a further object of the invention to provide an attachment of this character in the form of a band or ring adapted to embrace the lower threaded portion of the conventional type of spark plug, the lower portion of the spark plug being provided with an annular recess, the ring or band having a nipple or air chamber communicating with the recem, the recess communicating with the interior of the spark plug, whereby air admitted to the nipple or air chamber may be circulated through the recess and enter the spark plug at several points.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts to be'herein: after more particularly described, fully claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a spark plug, showing the attachment applied;

Referring to the drawings, 10 designates a tubular body member of a spark plug, said body member being of conventional form. The lower end portion 11 of the body member is reduced and threaded, by means of which the spark plug is connected to the engine cylinder. By reducing the .end portion 11, an annular shoulder 12 is provided at the junction of the reduced end portion with the body member of the spark plug. This shoulder is intended to receive a washer or other means disposed between the shoulder and the engine cylinder. The purpose of this shoulder in the present invention, however, will be described hereafter. An annular recess 13 is provided at the junction of said reduced end portion with the body portion and inwardly of the shoulder 12 and the threads of the end portion 11. The structure above described is common to A plu rality of laterally extending openings 14 are provided in the body portion 10 of the spark plug, said openings extending from the innor wall of the recess 13 to the inner Wall of the body portion 10 to permit communication between the recess and the interior of the-body portion. The number of these recesses is not limited, for the purpose of illustration, two are shown. The purpose of the openings 14 is to permit the entrance of fluid that may have accumulated in the recess into the interior of the spark plug and around the core of the spark plug.
In connection with the structure just described, a novel attachment is used, said attachment comprising a ring or band 15 corresponding in diameter to the circumference of the end portion 11. The ring 15 is provided with a laterally extending opening 16, in which a tubular member or nipple *17 ,is disposed. "The nippleis considerably longer than the thickness of thering or band so as to project beyond theouter face of the ring 15. The outer end 18 of the nipple 17 is substantially conical, while theinner end 19 is snugly disposed within the opening 16, the extremity of the inner end 19' being flushed with the innerend of the ring. Disposed within the chamber or niption of the conical end 18 of the nipple so as to prevent the passage of fluid through the conical end 18 of the nipple. In order to prevent accidental disengagement of the ball 20 from the nipple 17 through the end 19 thereof,- a stop pin 21 is disposed centrally of the end portion 19 and is adapted to be engaged by the ball, the pin being of a thickness to substantially prevent movement of the ball beyond the nipple and yet could interfere with the passage of. fluid around the pin and'through the end 19. In addition to serving as a stop for the check valve ball 20, the pin is also used to secure, in addition to other means, the nipple 17 within the opening 16, as the pin 21 extends through the ring 15 from edge to edge, as well as through the nipple 17. This is clearly shown in Figure 2.
In applying the attachment, a washer 22 is disposed upon the body portion 10 and adapted to engage the shoulder 12; The attachment or ring 15 is then applied to the end portion 11 and a second washer 23 engaged with the lower edge of the band. The body portion is then threaded into the engine cylinder in the well known manner, causing the shoulder 12.to bind upon the washers and urge the attachment into enventing movement of the attachment, as well 85 as disengagement of the spark plug. It will gagement with the cylinder, thereby prebe noted in Figure 2 that the attachment cooperates with the recess 13 to substantially provide an annular channel, said channel communicating with the air chamber or nipple 17 and also with the interior of the spark plug through the medium of the openings 14. From the foregoing it will be readilyseen that this invention provides a novel attach- Y ment capable of being applied to a conventional form of spark plug. The only alterations necessary are the provision of the openings 1 1 and disposing the shoulder 12 nearer the top of the body portion 10 to increase the length of the end portion 11, as the recess 13 is common to popular types of spark plugs. In addition to this, no securing means are required. for connecting the attachment to the body portion, this being provided for by the threaded end portion 11 through the cooperation of the shoulder 12. Furthermore, the attachment is composed of only a small number of parts which can be readily pro: duced and assembled at a small cost.-
What is claimed is An attachment for spark plugs'comprising a ring having a laterally extending opening, a nipple disposed within said opening, the end of said nipple being.v substantially conical, the opposite end of the nipple being disposed flush with the inner face of the ring, a check valve ball disposed within a pin extending transversely of the ring and through-the nipple for securing the nipple to the ring and preventing removal of the check valve ball from the nipple.
