Be it known that l., .loser Pansa, a citizen of the Republic of Switzerland, and resident of Zurich, in the Canton of Zurich, Switzerland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cloth Holders, of which the following is a specification.

There are holders for fabrics and particularly for stockings whereby provision is made of a base plate and a cover between which the fabric is once bent into B-shape and clamped by the partial overlapping of the base plate through the cover. However, such clamping arrangement is not equally satisfactory for thin and thick stockings, the consequence being that the fabric, when a pull is exerted at a pla-ce before its S5 shaped bend, is liable to slide in the holder.

It is the object of the present invention to avoid this drawback which is attained by the hereinafter described improvements in holders of the type mentioned. According to my invention l maire provision on the cover and between the ends thereof of at least one rigid clamping or pressing device, and on the base plate and between its ends at least one other pressing device, all in such a manner, that the pressing device or devices fitted on the cover abuts against or engages the pressing device mounted on the base plate when these parts are in closed position. ln this way the fabric is repeatedly bent, that is, it is gripped in more than one place and what is the most important, upon a pull being exerted on that portion of the fabric situated before the c3-shaped bend, this bent portion is very firmly clamped by the opn positely acting clam ping or pressing devices. The gripping action is hereby all the stronger the greater the pulling action. Thus, a sliding of the ilabric, whether the latter be thin or thick, is rendered impossible. According to the first construction embodying my invention, Figs, l to 3, l is the base-plate made of any suitable material, for instance Celluloid, horn er metal, and fashioned with two undulations 2 and a rib 3 at one end which extends beyond the height of the said undulations. Part of the base plate is formed of a slide 4 which, by means of a spring 5, tends to press in the direction of the arrow 6 designates the cover provided at the lower face with an undulation 7 which forms a rigid clamping or pressing means disposed between the ends of the cover and longitudinally thereof, and two extensions 8 and 9 which are so formed and arranged that they correspond with and are adapted to tit over the undulations of the base-plate.

lf it is desired to clamp and hold a cloth or other fabric the latter, with the slide temporarily pulled back, is placed over the baseplate l while the extension 8, as shown in Fig. l in dotted lines, is pressed beneath the rib j the fabric l0 being shaped accordingly. The cover 6 is thereupon pressed down in the direction of the arrow y, Fig. l, the fabric l() simultaneously being made to take the shape of the undulations. The slide it is subsequentlyY released in order to be pressed. by the spring 5 over and against the extension 9 of the cover which is thus curely clamped and in turn causes the clamping and holding of the fabric l0. lt will be easily understood that instead of one single spring two such springs could be mounted and that the number and forni of the undulations could be modified, no special illustrations being necessary.

Following the reference numeral l0 in Fig. l the fabric is caused to be bent into @shape in the known manner. However, at the rear of the undulations 2, 7, 2, 9 the fabric is once more bent and if new a pull to wards the left is exerted on the fabric at the place indicated by l0 inV F ig. l, the

ufabric has a tendency to move the cover 6 towards the right since it is unable to raise said cover. The consequence is that the uneach other in a right-hand directionthereY by repeatedly and iirrnly gripping the in'- i terposed fabric so that a sliding thereof, as distinctive from known constructions, is prevented. h/Ioreover, the stronger the pull at 10 on the fabric the firmer the gripping `action of the clamping means 2, 7, Qand 9.

lVheu combined as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the two holders, designated by I and II respectively, are each provided with eyelets 1l which serve to connect the holders by means of an ordinary or elastic band l2 or the like, the said eyelets being integral with the base-plates l. 13 designates part of ladies underwear and le part of a stocking. It is hereby of no importancel whether the underwearl reaches above the stocking, as shown in full lines, or whether it extends be low the same, as shown at l5 in dotted lines. Such a combination of two holders is especially adapted for use as ladies Suspenders and is distinguished from those which are attached at one end of the stays inasmuch as a holder or, in this case, Suspenders according to my invention may be kept shorter and can be applied anywhere, for instance at the front of the thigh where it does not embarrass the movement of the wearer.

According to the Figs. 6 "to 8, illustrating the holderseniployed as inens suspenders, the holders I and II are connected with one another by means of an eyelet ll formed on the base-plate of the holder II, and a buckle 16 which engages with thesaid eyelet on the one hand and withan eyelet provided in the cover 6 of the holder I on the other hand. 1'? represents the part. of the pants and i8 part ofthe socks of which the top fits over the bottom ofthe pants.

In all these cases thel cover, made to lie at one side of the cloth or other fabric and caused to be pressed against the base-plate on the other side of the said fabric, is oven lapped by the base-plate when in locked position and securely held therein with'l the fabric.

In place of the slide i a trapplate 19 could be provided, Fig. 9, which is under the control of a spring 19a, and instead of the undulations on the baseplate as a rigid pressing means a semi-spherical projection 2 could be arranged, Fig. 1l. Furthermore, and referring to Fig. l0, two covers 20 and two slides 21 might be employed and made to fit over one single base-plate 22 while, if desirable, the base-plate provided with one slide only could befashioned with two ribs 3A similar to that shown with reference to Fig. l. In such case the cover would require to beof two parts such as illustrated in Fig. l2 and arranged inthe manner of a hinge 23 divided in the middle and adapted to be held in closed position by a flat spring 24e.

Having now fully described my saidA in vention what I claim and desire tosecure by Letters Patent is l. In a holder for fabrics for use particularly with stockings, the combination of a rigid base plate and a rigid cover, the said cover in closed position resting over substanti ally its whole length on the base plate, and the said base plate overlapping one end of the cover thereby bending the fabric lying between the base plate and the cover into ifi-shape, at least lone rigid pressing device fitted on the cover and between the ends thereof, and at least one rigid pressing device mounted on and between the ends of the base plate, both pressing devices when in closed position again bending the fabric interposed between the said devices.

2. In a holder for fabrics for use particularly with stockings,the combination of a rigid base plate and a rigid cover, the said cover in closed position resting over substantially its whole length on the base plate, and the said base plate overlapping lone end of the cover thereby bending the fabric lyingbetween the base plate and the cover into SS-shape, at least one rigidpressing device fitted on the cover and between the ends thereof, and at least one rigid pressing device mounted on and between the ends of the base plate, both` pressing devices` when in closed position abutting against each other, the base plateand confer closed position being slightly movable in relation to one another, and the pressing devices owing'to a pulling action on the fabric before its S- shape thus securely gripping the fabric between themselves.

3. In a holder forl fabrics for use particularly with stockings, the combination of a rigid base plate and a rigid cover, the said cover in closed position resting over substantially its whole length on the base plate, and the said base plate overlapping one end of the cover thereby bending the fabric lying between the base plate and the cover into S- shape, at least one rigid member iitted on and arranged longitudinally vand between the en ds ofthe cover and forming a pressing device, and at least one rigid member mounted on and between the ends andlongitudinally of the base plate and forming another pressing device, both the said members when in closed position abutting against each other and again bending the interposed fabric. i

4C. In a holder for fabrics for use particularly with stockings, the combination of a rigid base plate and a rigid cover, the said cover in closed position resting over substantially its whole length on the base plate, and the said base plate overlapping one end of the cover thereby bending the interposed fabric into S-shape, at least one rigid cross rib fitted on and arranged longitudinally and between the ends of the cover and forming a pressing device, and at least one rigid cross-rib mounted on and between the ends and longitudinally of the base plate and forming another pressing device, both the said cross-ribs abutting against each other when in closed position and again bending the interposed fabric.

5. In a holder for fabrics foruse particw larly with stockings, the combination of a rigid base plate and a rigid cover, the said cover in closed position resting over substantially its whole length on the base plate, and the said base plate overlapping one end of the 'cover thereby bending the interposed fabric into S-sha-pe, the other end of the cover being held in closed position by means of a spring-member, at least one rigid pressing device Inounted on and between the ends of the cover and longitudinallythereof, and at least one rigid pressing device fitted on and between the ends and longitudinally of the base plate, both the said pressing devices in closed position abutting and engaging each other and again bending the interposed fabric.
