Description

W. M. LOWTHORP.
WINDOW LOCK. APPLICATION FILED JAN. 11. 1922.
Patented July 25, 1922.
WILLIAM MARCUS L'ov Hoar; OFISUMMERTOWN, 'rnmnnssnn;
VINDOW LOCK.
Spar
To all 10 7mm it may concern Be it known that I, VJILLIAM Low'rnonr, a citizen of the United residing at Summertown, in the co Lawrence and State of Tennessee, l LVB invented a new and useful lVindow 1 wk, of which the following is a specificath 1.
This invention aims to provide a simple means whereby a window or the like nay be held at adjusted heights, it being. to raise the window, to lower the wir. hold the window at any desired he be moved upwardly when desired, lock the window, so that the same cannot be moved either upwardly or down zardly. Another object of the invention is 0 provide a device of the class described which will possess great strength, and l a well adapted to withstand the efforts of )ersons seeking to raise the window with fe onious intent.
It is within the province of the dis closure to improve generally and to enhai ce the utility of devices of that type to wl? ch the invention appertains.
lVith the above and other objects 5 1 View, which will appear as the descriptn 11 proceeds, the invention resides in the c( mbination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood tha' with in the scope of What is claimed, cha iges in the precise embodiment of the in ention shown can be made without departii g from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows in elevation, a dev ce constructed in accordance with the invention, parts being in section; Figure 2 is longitudinal section taken through the guide which carries the locking bolt; and Figure 3 is a section on the line 33 of Figure 1.
The numeral 1 marks a window frame, the numeral 2 designating a window sash carrying a pane 3. A rack strip 4,- preferably Linens States, nty of low, to
'made of metal is secured at 5 to the frame hold the guide or. the sash 2. In the guide 8 a T-shaped slot 11 is formed, the slot including a body 12 extended transversely of the guide, and a head 14 extended longitusation of Letters Patent.
ossible ght, to- 1nd to Patented July i922.
nuary 11, 1922. Serial No. 528,391.
dinally of the guide, the body portion 12 of the slot having an arm 15 extended longitudinally of the guide-and opening through the inner end thereof, as clearly shown in Figure 1. Ac bolt 16 is mounted for reciprocation in the guide 8 and has a stud 17 pro vided with a finger piece 18 of any desired kind. The stud 17 extends outwardly through the slot 11 in the guide 8 and is adapted to operate therein as hereinafter described. Atits outer end, the bolt 16 terminates in a tip 19 having a=beveled extremity, and provided with parallel sides 21. A compression spring. 22 is located in the guide 8 and is interposed between the end of the bolt 16 and the end of the guide.
When the parts are arranged as shown in Figure 1, the bolt 16 is advanced by the spring 22 until the stud 17 abuts against the casing 8 at the outer end of the head it of the slot 11, the beveled end 20 of the tip 19 of the bolt being so positioned with respect to the seat 6 that, when the sash 2 is raised, the bolt 16 will slide to the right (Figure 1) and permit a raising of the sash. The tip of the bolt cooperates with the seat 6 in such a way that, as will be evident from Figure 1, the window sash 2 cannot be low ered until the bolt 16 is moved to the right, the stud 17 retiring into the right hand end of the head 14 of the slot 11. WVhen the parts are arranged as shown in Figure 1, the window sash 2 is held releasably against downward movement, but is free for upward movement. 1
Through the instrumentality of the stud 17, the bolt 16 may be given a quarter turn, the stud 17 traversing the body 12 of the slot 11 and moving into the arm 15 of the slot. Under such circumstances, the parallel sides 21 of the bolt cooperate with the parallel portions 7 of the seat 6, and, then, the window sash 2 is locked positively against movement either upwardly or downwardly. Since the arm 15 of the slot extends through one end of the guide 8, the bolt 16 may be inserted into the guide, the stud 17 entering through the arm 15 of the slot.
It is to be observed that the guide 8 includes a thickened portion 25, wherein the major portion of the slot 11 is located. Owing to the fact that the guide is thickened as at 25, the guide is not materially weakened by the formation of the slot. The flanges 9, further, are carried by the aforesaid thickened portion 25 of the guide and the strength of the device is enhanced, so far as the attachment of the guide to the window sash is concerned.
l/Vhat is claimed is l 1. The combination with a frame and a slidable sash, of a rack strip on the frame and having a seat provided with parallel portions; a guide on the sash and having a T-shaped slot including a transverse body, a longitudinal head at one end of the body and a transverse arm at the other end of the body; a bolt slidable in the guide, and a stud projecting from the bolt, the bolt c0- operating with one of the parallel portions of the seat to hold the sash against downward movement and the bolt having a beveled end which is so positioned with respect to the other parallel portion of the seat that the sash may be raised when the stud is at one end of the head of the slot, the stud being movable to the other end of the head of the slot to permit a lowering of the sash, the bolt having parallel surfaces, and being rotatable to permit said surfaces to coact with the parallel portions of the seat there by to hold the sash against upward movement and downward movement, the stud being adapted to enter the extension of the slot by way of the body of the slot, thereby to hold the bolt against rotation; and spring means inthe guide for advancing the bolt.
2. A device of the class described, constructed as set forth in claim 1, and further characterized by the fact that the extension of the slot opens through one end of the guide.
3. A device of the class described, constructed as set forth in claim 1, and further characterized by the fact that the guide includes a thickened portion wherein the major part of the slot is located, said thickened portion carrying flanges whereby the guide is attached to the sash.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of a witness.
WILLIAM MARCUS LOIVTIIORP.
