UNITED STAT THOMAS B. JONES, OE TUB/LOCK, CALIFORNIA.
PISTON RING;
Application filed May 25,y
. To all @07mm t may concern comprises `a ring having its vupper outer` edge beveled, and its lower inner edgebevv eled or provided with tapering notches ory preferably having. its lower inner edge bev-l eled and provided with tapering notches to permitl passage of oil inwardly to the bottom of the ring groove. .1 y
This application is a continuation,in part, of my copending application ,for piston rings, filed March 9, 1921, Serial Norelii.
Various constructions of piston rings have been provided for the purpose of collecting surplus oil to prevent it from passing into the explosion chamber thereby fouling the spark plugs and causing carbon deposits on the cylinder heads and the top of the piston. l have found that the use of oil collecting means onlypractical in the lower ring groove or grooves of the piston to collect the oil and return it through openings in the pistons. To accomplish this object,'1 provide a reservoir at the bottom of the lower ring groove and f urther provide means for drawing the oil inwardly to this reservoir on the downward stroke of the piston. The piston is further provided with openings communicating with the reservoir in the bottom of the ring groove to permit the surplus oil to be returned to the crank case.
By providing a lower ring "having its upper Vouter edge beveled, the ring is prevented from carrying oil upwardly during the upward stroke of the piston and thus prevented from entering the explosion chamber. The lower outer edge of the ring is provided with a sharp corner to scrape the surplus oil on the downward stroke of the piston and prevent it from passing by the ring, rlhe surplus oil enters the reser voir formed by tapering the inner lower edge of the piston ring or providing notches and is thence returned through the openings in the piston.
Specification of Letters Patent.

a piston showing one `form of the inventionl applied,
Figure Q is a detail perspective view showing the ring detached., Figure 3 is a detail view of the ring shown in Figure 2, i l
`Figure 4: is a perspective viewof another formof the invention, and,
Figure 5 is a similar view modification.
Referring to the drawings, the reference numeral ldesignatesa piston of ordinary construction provided with a piston rod 2, connected thereto by means of a wrist pin Vof. a f urther 3. 'The piston is provided with upper grooves t arranged near the top and adapted yto receive compression rings 5. As shown, these rings fare rectangular incrosssection and are adapted tol form a perfect `seal between. the piston-and the cylinder wall to preventthe explosive mixture from passing downwardly vduring the compressionstrolrejof the, engine.
rihe piston is further provided with a lower ring groove 6, preferably disposed below the wrist pin and provided' with a plurality of openings 7, communicating with the interior of the piston. ring 8 is arranged in this groove, the ring beingprovided with an upper outer beveled edge 9, as shown. T he lower outer edge of the ring is provided with a sharp corner l0. The lower inner edge is beveled as at ll., and may further be provided with spaced notches l2.
ln the form of the invention shown in Figure lof the drawings, the ring i3 provided with the upper beveled edge shown in Figures l to 3, and in place of the lower inner beveled edge, the ring is provided with plurality of notches le, slightly larger in size than the notches employed in the ferm shown in Figure 2 of the drawings.
ln the form of the invention shown in Figure 5 of the drawings, a ring 15 is provided having an upper outer beveled edge (not shown) and a lower inner beveled edge 1G. Each of the forms of rings may be pro'- videdwvith interlocking ends l? of any desired construction,
ln the form of the invention shown in F'gures l to 8 of the drawings, the upper rings 5 carry su'liieient oil upwardly during the upward stroke of the piston lubrica'te the cylinder and not present an excess of oil to be carbonized when the charge is fired.
ring will be in its uppermost position slightly ipeced from the bottom of the ring roove and the oil will be drawn inwardly t rough the notches 12 Vto the reservoir formed at the inner edge o1 the bettom'ef the ring groove by the notches and .the beveled edge. Thence the oil passes three the o 'ng 7 and returns downward y througnhe interior of the piston to the crank case.
In the form of the invention shown in Figure 1 of the drawi the operation is essentially the same. slower outer eel e of the ri removes the surplus oil from t walls oflitie-eylnder during the downward stroke and this excess oil passes through the notches-1410 the bottom of the groove 6, and thence through openings 7.
In the ferm of the invention shown in Figure 5 of the drawings, which is intended primarily for use with smaller engines, the i oil enters the bottom of the ring groove and flows into the reservoir formed by the beveled ed e 16.
It is to e understood that the forms of my invention herewith shown and described are to be taken as preferred examples ot' the samnand that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit ofthe invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
L' A piston ring comprising a body portion haring parallel front and rear walls and mllel top and bottom forming relative y sharp eorners at the inner upper edge and lover outer edge, said. ring being provided with an outer upper beveled edge and a lower inner beveled edge.'
2. A piston ring provided with 'an outer upper beveled edge, a. lower inner beveled edge, and ta ering notches arranged on the lower fece ossnid ring. y
In testimon whereof I affix my signature in presence o Ytwo witnesses.
