y specification.
This invention relates to permutation padlocks of that general class having a slidahle shackle provided with notches and tumbler rings adapted to be turned into said notches to lock the shackle, or, when properly relatively set to carry out the combination, to release the shackle by virtue of the registry therewith of notches in the rings.
My improvements relate, more particularly, to the provision of a novel combination of shackle and body by which the shackle is prevented from pulling out completely and becoming lost but which permits the shackle to be slid when the proper combination of tumbler rings has been brought about.
The invention also consists in the general novel combination and relationship of body, tumbler rings, and shackle as set forth fully hereinafter.
The novel features and combinations residing in the invention are recited in the appended claim. Y
ln the accompanying drawings.:
Figure 1 is a side elevation, the shackle being locked.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section with'the parts in the condition showing the shackle unlocked, and in full lines before being drawn out, dotted lines representing the manner in which the shackle can be swung on its joint.
Fig. 3 is a verticalsection showing the shackle locked.
Fig. 4 is a section on line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a section on line 5 5 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 6 is a section on line 6-6 of Fig. 3; and
Fig. 7 is a detail elevation of the body with parts broken away to villustrate the socket 'which receives the inner end of the shackle, the head of the body being removed.
rll`he cylindrical body 1 is provided with a head 2 which may be pinned or secured thereto in any suitable manner. Along one side of the body extends a groove 3 which'is in line with a pocket 4 and which is intersected by a groove or chamber 5. The pocket 4 and groove or chamber 5 comprise part of specification of Lettei-s Patent.
Patented July 25, 1922.

the main features of my present improvements as distinguished from earlier permutation padlocks.
Rotatably mounted on the body 1 are active Vtumblers 6, 7,8, and located intermedi- `ate these tumblers are inactive or false tuinblers comprising rings 9 serving as a mounting for outer bands 10. The purpose of the rings 9 and bands 10 is to mislead as they exert no locking action on the shackle nor have anything to do with the arrangement of the combination but they are provided with numerals, as shown in Fig. 1, to make the lock that much harder to open.
The shackle may be made in a single U-shaped piece having one leg 11 adapted to extend into the body through a notch 12 in the head 2 and into the groove 3 and pocket 4, the other, shorter, leg 13 having its end adapted to be received in a locking depression 14 in the head 2, or, the shackle may be orovided with a joint 15. Both forms of s ackle are intended to be covered by my claim. The provision vof the l joint 15 is of advantage in enabling the shackle to be swung down as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. On the other hand, if the f shackle is made in a single piece, without the joint 15, it is necessary to turn the shackle on the leg 11 as an axis to ,ca-use the leg 13 to clear the head 2.
The shackle is provided'with notches to receive the tumblers 6, 7, 8, to thereby lock the shackle as shown in Fig. 3. The tumblers, however, are provided with notches 17 on their inner surface which, when brought into register with the leg 11 of the shackle, permit the shackle to be drawn upwardly. In order to bring about this condition it is necessary to relatively arrange the tumblers 6, 7, 8, to carry out the proper combination. This combination is shown iii` F ig.' 1, where the head 2 is provided with a mark or line 18; the numeral 3 on thetumturn or swing it, according as it is rigid er has joint l5, l provide a lug 2O on the end of the leg 1l; this lng and the en d ot leg ll are received in the recess or chamber l- When the lock is in locked condition as shown in F 3. `\'.7\7hen the shackle is unlocked and is pulled out, the lug 2O is received in the channel 5 and as this channel has an over-hanging shoulder 5a, the shackle cannot be draw Yn out after the lug Q0 engages said shoulder. lf the shackle is turnedl on the longitudinal axis of the leg ll, the lng 2O turns into the recess 5.
l claim:
ln a permutation padlockl` the combination with a cylindrical body having enlarged heads at its ends and a longitudinally extending groove in its side, of a plurality of peripherally exposed annularV tumblers each having an internal notch, said tumblers being rotatably mounted on said body between the heads thereof, and a shackle having a leg slidalole in said groove and adapted to be looked by said tumblers, or released when their notches register with the groove afore said7 said leg being provided with a lug at its inner end, there being provided in the ybody a pocket to loosely receive said lug and a shoulder overhanging said pocket7 said pocket permitting the leg to be slid lengthwise of itself and the shoulder serving as a stop to engage the lug and prevent complete detachment of the shackle from the body, and peripherally exposed annular false tuinblers associated With the locking tuniblers but having no locking action on the shackle.
In testimony whereof lf aix my signature.
