HEEL FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented July 25, 1922 Application filedDecember 22, 1920. Serial No. 432,527.
To all whom it may concern- Be it known that I, Lnsrna CERF, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Heel Fastener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to heel fasteners such as shown and described in the application for Letters Patent of the United States, Serial No. 379,837 filed by me on May 8, 1920.
The object of my present invention is to provide a new and improved heel fastener arranged to securely fasten the heel in place and to reinforce and strengthen the heeL Another object is to allow the heel fastener to adjust itself to any angular variation between the sole and the heel.
Another object is to provide a heel fastener arranged to permit of fastening heels of different height securely in place on the footwear.
Another object is to dispense with the dowel pin now generally used to reinforce a heel particularly such made of wood.
WVith these and other objects in view,the invention consists of certain nove features of construction as hereinafter shown and de scribed and then specifically pointed out in the claim.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved heel fastener as applied to secure a high heel to a womans slipper, the heel and portion of the sole of the shoe being shown is section;
Figure 2 is an enlarged rear end elevation of the heel fastener;
Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional side elevation of the means. for holding the spring in place on the connecting member; and
Figure 4 is a side elevation of a modified form of the heel fastener with part of the tubular socket shown in section.
The improved heel fastener serves to fasten the heel 10 to the sole 11 of a boot, shoe, slipper or other footwear 12, the heel being preferably of wood with a top lift 13 of leather or other suitable material at the lower end. The heel fastener in its general construction consists of a heel plate 15 adapted to rest ontop of the sole 11, and the un der side of the heel plate 15 is provided with a centrally disposed lug16 connected by a pivot 17 with. an extension member 18 forming part of a tubular socket 19 extending into the upper portion of a bore 20 formed inthe shoe heel 10. The tubular socket 1.9 is provided with an internal screw thread 21, and the said extension member 18 is preferably-in the form of a screw screwing into the thread 21 to lengthen or shorten the socket according to the height of the heel 10 on which the heel fastener is used at the time. t
The lower end of the socket 19 is connected. with a connectingmember 25 which, as shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3, is in the form of a pin 26 having a head 27 and a reduced portion 28 provided with a screw thread 29 at its upper end. The reduced portion 28 is provided with diametrically opposite grooves 30, and a U-shaped spring 31 is held on the upper end of the same and extends with its side arms into the said grooves 30. The free ends 32 of the spring 31 are bent outward to engage the internal screw thread 21 of the socket 19 to fasten the pin 26 to the socket 19. A cap 35 screws on the upper threaded end of the reduced portion 28 of the pin 26 to hold the spring 31 in osition. The pin 26 fits into the lower portion of the bore 20 and on the pin is held a washer 36 seated in the bottom of a concentric bore 37 at the under side of the heel 10. The head 27 of the pin 26 abuts against the washer 36 and eX- tends within the bore 37 In order to assemble the parts it is only necessary to push the socket 19 into the upper end of the bore 20 until the heel plate 15 rests on top of the sole 11 and then the pin 26 is driven into the lower end of the bore 20 to engage the ends 32 of the spring 31 with the internal screw thread 21 of the socket 19 to fasten the pin 26 to the said socket and to hold the heel in position on the under side of the sole 11. When it is desired to disassemble the parts then the operator applies a screw driver or other tool to the head 27 of the pin 26 and turns the same to unscrew the spring ends 32 from the thread 31 of the socket 19 to disconnect the pin 26 from the said socket 19. The socket 19 and the pin 26 can now be pulled out of the bore 20.
It is understood that prior to inserting the socket 19 into the bore 20 the socket is adjusted on its extension member 18 according to the height of the heel on which the heel fastener is to be used at the time.
In the modified form shown in Figure 4:, the heel plate 40 is provided on the under side witha lug 41 connected by a pivot 42 with a tubular socket 4:3 provided with an internal screw thread ll in whichscrews a screw 45 having a head 46 and taking the place of the pin 26 above mentioned. In this case the screw l5 instead of being-driven in like the pin 26 is to be screwed into the socket 48 when assembling theparts.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the socket 19: or 4:3 acts as a dowel to reinforce the heel 1O besides being used as one of the principal members for fastening the heel in position on the sole 11. It will also be noticed that by having a pivotal connection between the socket 19 and the heel plate the two parts readily adjust themselves according to the angular position between the sole 11 and the heel 10. It will rurther be noticed that by making provision for length ening or shortening the socket the heel fastener can be readily used for heels of different height.

claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent Means for detachably securing heels to footwear, said means comprising a plate adapted to engage the inner face of the sole of the footwear, a lug carried by said plate and adapted to project through the sole of a screw-threaded member pivotally secured to said lug, a second screwthreaded member circular in cross-sectional form and adapted to receive the first-men- 'tioned screw-threaded member, and means for securing said v last-mentiol'ied screwthreaded member in the heel of the footwear, said securing means comprising a hub member having a reduced screw-threaded extremity provided with oppositely disposed grooves, a U-shaped wire adapted to enclose the end or said reduced extremity and lie in said grooves, and a removable cap having a screw-threaded recess adapted to receive the reduced screw-threaded extremity of the hub member to secure said U-shaped wire therein in such a manner as to permit of its free ends engaging the internal threads of the circular screw-threaded member, as and for the purpose set forth.
