To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, ANDREW J. FALLON, a subject ofv Great Britain, resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 1n Locks, of which the following' 1s a lull, clear, and exact specificav tion.

The object of my invention is to provide such a lock with means whereby on locking the door from the inside the same key may be utilized as a sto-p, preventing the use upon the outsideJ of the door of a similar or skeleton key retracting the bolt from its locked position and the possibility of its ben ing picked up by any other means. n
The further object of my invention is to provide such a lock with means for the purposes above referred to for adapting the use of a key asl a stop for both. common and tumbler locks.
With these ends in view my invention finds embodiment in certain ,features of novelty in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts by which the said 0b- `jects and certain other objectsare attained,
all as hereinafter fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings` and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

The form of the lock casings 6-6, shown in the several figures of the drawing.y including their registering perforations 7 7 for the stem of knob shanks and their registeringkey holes 8--8 and keys9.9 for actuating the bolts 10-10 are common and well known, as are also their bolts and the bolt mechanism shown inthe drawings, and.` need not be described in detail further than to point out, that F igs. 1 and 2 illustrate a plain lock, whereas in Figs. 3 and l there is illustrated a tumbler form of lock to both formsof which locks my invention is adapted,`as Vwill obviously appear laterl on, it may be, to othertypes and constructions of locks provided with a sliding bolt, as is the boltv in the two types of locks referred to.
For adaptingmy invention to both forms of the locks shown in the drawings their casings are each provided with an additional key hole ll, theY eye l2 of which is so lo-r cated that when the bolts are in their locked position the stem of a key inserted through the eye, will project in a path of movement of the bolts 1.0 and is not exposed until when the bolts are projected to their locked position, as shown in the drawings.
With ythe eye l2 vofthe key hole thus located it will be seen that following the movement of their respective bolts to theirlocked position on removing' the keys from their respective key holes 8 8 and inserting them through the-then exposed key holes il il., which kevholes are inaccessible from the outside of the door, the stein ot the keyl will operate as a stop. preventing` the withdrawal of the boltA from its keeper. thereby making it impossible to unlock the door with another and similar key or skeleton key, or to pick the lock bythe use of any other device or devices.
In short, my vinvention provides for rthe use of a single keyfor locking and unlockingr a door both from its inside and outside',
In this connection it may be observed that the tumblers for a reciprocating lock bolt are commonly provided with openings adjacent their free ends in the path of the movement of the bolt which are so located as indicated in Figs. 3 and 4f, that the slot of the tumbler adjacent the path of movement of the`l bolt is covered when the bolt is retracted and uncovered on moving it to its locked `position, and when the door is locked and providing an opening through the .tumblers past the rear end of the lock bolt and for the passage of a key, across the path of the movement of the bolt, so that on its insertion the key operates as 'a stop for the boltin the same manner and with the same result as it does when inserted through the corresponding key hole shown in Figs. l. and 2.
Among the advantages attributable to the use of my inventionis that the additional key hole involves no additional expense, because it may be formed in the casing in casting the same also that the key for locking a door both from its inside and ont may be utilized as a stop, preventing the withdrawal of the locking bolt after locking the door from the inside, and that a lock prtuided with a sliding bolt of any old and well known construction may thereby be adapted to perform the functions of and dispense with the use of an ordinary sliding bolt heretofore commonly employed to prevent the opening of the door following the picking of the lock.
4ily invention is also adapted for `combined locks and latches, wherein there is also another and spring seated latch bolt operated by means of a knob shank passing through the perforation '7-7 of the latchcases shown in the drawing, and which-are so old and have heretofore been commonly employed in connection with sliding bolts and their operative mechanism shown in the drawings, that there seems to be no necessity for their illustration for a clear under-` standing ot the application of my inven-` tion thereto.
As a means for preventing any lateral movement of the key on the lock bolt of a tumbler lock when in its operative position as a stop for preventing the retraction of the bolt, the bolt l() may be recessed (see Fig. 5) as indicated at 13 for the wing of the key. Ordinarily and when the key is confined between projecting lugs, as shown in Figi 3, such a groove is unnecessary,`
Then my invention is applied to the simple bolt style of lock 'the key maybe turned and locked against' accidental displacement, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. l. i
In conclusion it should be understood that the projection of a pin through the eye 12 Ainstead of the stein of the key, preventing the retraction of the lock bolt, would not be a substantial de aarture from m invention notpose o't'locking-the door and preventing the retracting ofthe `bolt frointlie outside afterl the door is locked, ythis being accomplished in the manner already described.
