GATE HINGE.
Application filed July 29,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY T. Hacxnn, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Lovell, in the county of Bighorn and State of Wyoming, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gate Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple construction of a gate adapted for farms and for general purposes, wherein adjustment may readily be eifected to secure the desired tendency of the gate to swing in relation to a closed position to avoid the necessity of forcibly returning the same to the normal position after displacementto permit of the passage of a vehicle; and with these objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and combinationof parts, of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherem:
Figure 1, is a side view of the gate embodying the invention.
Figure 2, is a front view of the latch post with the connected latch seats.
Figure 3, is a vertical sectional view of the gate on the plane indicated by the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4, is a plan view partly in section onthe plane indicated by the line H of Figure 1, showing the upper hinge members.
Figures 5 and 6 are detail views respectively of the upper hinge members.
Figure 7, is a detail side view partly in section of the lower hinge members.
In the illustrated construction, the gate embodies the terminal uprights 10 and 11 connected by extensible longitudinal members 12 preferably of telescopic construction with the tubular members 13 thereof pivotally connected as at 14 to the hinged upright 11 and the core elements 15 pivotally mounted as at 16 upon the latch upright 10, the said elements being secured in their des red adjusted relations affording the desired length of gate structure by means of set screws 17 or the equivalent thereof. The upper and lower extremities of the latch and hinge uprights are preferably connected longitudinally by the tension elements 18 consisting of heavy wires orrods provided at intermediate points with adjusting means such as turn buckles 19. Also the longitudinal members of the gate are preferably connected by re-inforced brace members 20 each of which consists of sidebars 21 arranged Specification of Letters Patent.

upon opposite sides of the plane of the extenslble members 12 connected between the planes of said extensible members by cross bolts or rivets 22. The upper and lower extremities of the brace members are preferably separated to form seats 23 for the r ception of the tensile elements 18 which ma 7 consist of barbed wire as indicated in the drawing.
Also the diagonal braces 24 and 25 are preferably arranged to prevent the sagging of the free or latch end of the gate, the lower extremities of said braces being connected with the bottom marginal longitudi nal bar 12 by means of collars 26 and being attached at their upper rear ends to the hinge uprights 11.
The mounting of the gate upon the hinge post 27 is eflected by seating the lower end of the hinge upright upon a pivot stud 28 supported by a bracket 29 secured to the post and a hinge eye 30 which embraces the hinge upright near its upper end and is adjustably supported upon the post to provide for bearing the lateral intersection of the hinge upright to ensure the closing of the gate when released. In the construction illustrated, the hinge eye 30 is provided with an ear 31 provided with a plurality of openings 32 for selective engagement with pins 33 carried by a bolt 34 extending through and secured sub- Obviously the adjustment of the ear 31 with relation to the pins 33 carried by the post may be effected whenever desired by raising the hinge eye 30 of the hinge upright and then depressing the same after the alignment of the desired openings 32 thereof with the pins 33.
A supplemental hinge member may also be employed as indicated in the drawings when the bottom of the hinge upright consisting of an eye 34 engaged with the hinge upright and formed on. or carried by the adjacent end of a bolt 35 which extends through the hinge post.
The latch consists of the tongues 36 pivotally mounted as at 37 upon the latch upright connected by a rod 38, preferably having an intermediate ring or finger hold 39, a spring 40 being connected with the lower tongue to hold them in their horizontally extended or engaging position with relation to catches 41 which are supported by the latch post 42. Said catches consist of sockets 43 on opposite sides of which are arranged bevelled guides 44: serving to direct the latch tongues into engaging relation with the sockets or seats 43.
Fhe invention having been described what is claimed as new and useful is 1. The combination with a gate and gate post, of means carried by the post adjacent 2. The combination with a gate and gate post and means carried by the gate post and pivotally connecting with the gate adjacent the bottom and at that end adjacent the post, of an upper hinge member consisting of a plurality of upright pins and means for attaching the same eye connected with the gate and having an ear provided with a plurality of perforations for selective engagement with said pins to obtain a specified lateral deflection of the upper end of the gate for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof he aflixes his signature.
HENRY T. HACKER.
