Description

UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
MORGAN N. YOUNG, OF KELSEYVILLE, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN MILL-PICKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,321, dated August 26, 1873; application filed June 27, .1873.
To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, MORGAN N. YOUNG, of Kelseyville, Lake county, State of California, have invented an Improved Mill-Pick and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or, science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use mysaid invention or improvement without further invention or experiment.
My invention relates to that class of millpicks inwhicha pick or chisel is secured in a hammer-head, so that it can be readily removed for sharpening, or another substituted in its place when desired. My improvement consists in securing the pick or chisel in the hammer-head by means of a peculiar slot and wedge fastening similar to a dovetail joint, by which the chisel is secured and firmly held without screws or other fastening, thus renderin g its removal quite simple; at the same time its rigidity is not impaired.
In order to more fully illustrate and explain my invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my pick. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section, showing the manner of inserting the chisel.
Ais a hammer-head, and B the handle. I11 either one or both ends of the head A I make a slot, (l, which is wider at its base than at the end of the head, in the manner of making a dovetail slot. Besides being wider at its base than at its outside ends, the slot is wider at one side of the head than at the other side, so that a cross-section of the end of the head at any part of the slot would show a tapering or wedge-shaped slot. rear end formed to correspond with the shape of the slot cthat is, it is made tapering toward the point and also toward one side, so that by inserting its narrowest edge in the widest side of the slot, and forcing the base of the chisel into the slot by crowding it toward the opposite side of the head A, it will be wedged into the slot with great rigidity so as to be almost as firm as if it were a part of the head. By this manner I provide a simple, easily operated, and rigid joint for fastening chisels in hammer-heads.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is
The hammer-head A with its dovetail slot 0, which is also made tapering toward one side, in combination with the chisel D with its tapering double wedge-shaped base, substantially as and for the purpose above described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
MORGAN N. YOUNG. [L. s.]
