Description

P. G. GARDINER.
Car Axle.
Patented Feb, 12, 1856;
UNITED STATES PATENT oEEroE.
P. G. GARDINER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
RAILROAD-GAR AXLE.
Specification of Letters Patent No.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, P. G. GARDINER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Car- Axle; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification.
Figure 1, is a side view of my improved car-axle; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section of a portion of said axle; andFig. 3, a trans verse section of the same, in the line 0, d, of Fig. 2.
My improved car-axle is constructed in the following manner; viz; a sheet of metal a, of proper length, width, and thickness, is bent into the form of a tube, by giving it one, two, or more turns around a mandrel, and then the ends of said tube are welded to solid journal-pieces b, b. The surfaces of the said sheet of metal are left unconnected,
14,232, dated February 12, 1856.
save at the ends of the sheet, where they are solidly welded to the journal-pieces Z), Z), which causes the central portion of the axle to be elastic in a winding direction, and thereby prevent any injurious torsion strain from being exerted upon any portion of the axle, when subjected to the most violent usage.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is My improved car-axle, composed of a sheet of metal wound into a tubular form with its ends welded to solid journal-pieces, substantially as herein set forth.
The above specification of my new and improved tubular car-axle signed and witnessed this 20th day of November A. D.
