WINDOW-SASH HOLDER. i
Application filed December 20, 1319, Serial No. 346
To all 7o from it' m (1,7/ concern Be it known that l, HENRY L. ScHoLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spokane, in Spokane County and State of lllashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVindow-Sash Holders. of which the following is a specification,
My present invention relates to a new .and improved window-sash holder of the swinging bolt variety, and designed to be attached to one sash, as the lower one, and impinge against or contact with a portion of the upper sash, to hold either or both sashes in adjusted position. The primary object of the invention is the provision of a dev ice for this purpose that is comparatively inexpensive in cost of production, simple in construction and operation, durable, and thoroughly efficient in performing its intended function of holdinga the sashes in desired relative position. o this end the invention consists essentially in a supporting bracket attached preferably to the `up per portion of the lower sash and provided with a novel form of swinging bolt to be wedged or cammed in close frictional contact with the upper sash, thus providing means for holding the lower normally positioned sash in rigid relation with the adjusted upper sash, or permitting an elevation and retention of the lower sash with relation to the upper sash, and also enabling the upper sash to be lowered and the lower sash to be lifted and held in rigid relation one with another.
ln the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention constructed and arranged according to the best mode l have so far devised for the practical application of the principles of my invention.
Figure l is a perspective view showing so much of the window frame and the upper and lower sashes, as is necessaryfor a clear understanding of the exemplification of my invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the device on the upper cross bar of a lower sash and engaging the side bar of an upper sash.
Figure?) is a side elevation of the retain ing device or holder, detached.
For the purpose of illustrating the applin cation and use of my novel holding device Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July l,
Renewed April 1l, 1922. Serial No. 551,463. l have indicated the of window frame l., withk the upper sash 2 and the lower sash 3 of usual form and including the upper transverse bar l ofthe lower sash and vertical side bar-5 of the upper sash, with which members the device of the invention co-acts, and said indicatedas a whole by the numeral 6 in Figure l and secured on the top of the upper transverse bar 4E referred to.
The supporting bracket is preferably made of strong sheet metal as brass or steel with the two sides 7, 7, and angular fianges or base plates 8, 8, which, by means of the screws 9, are attached to the transverse bar 4 as shown in Figure 2. The bracket may also be of cast metal if desired, but in any event is made of the general outline and shape indicated, with a front, inclined or angular wall l() joining the two side walls 7, and fashioned with a pair of slots 1l, l1 spaced away from the front wall l0, and lying in a plane approximately at right angles to the inclined plane of the front wall or plate l0. Within the oppositely disposed, complementary slots ll l1 is journaled a swinging` bolt l2 in the form of a U shaped bail, and on the inwardly bent ends of the bail a lroller l2 is journaled which ymay be swung outwardly to inoperative position as in Figure 3, or inwardly to operative position as in Figure 2, which gures clearly show the action of the swinging bolt.
In Figure 2 it is apparent that the roller is jammed between the inclined face or platek conventionalized form device is lO ofthe bracket and the face of the side bar 5 of the upper sash, and that power applied to the upper sash to `lower it, or power applied to lthe lower sash to raise it, will only result in clamping the roller tighter between the two adjoining faces with the result that the two sashes are more intimately locked together. However, it will be clear that the upper sash may with facility be raised to close the upper sash of the window, as it is evident that lifting this sash will disengage the roller from the surfaces between which it is jammed. Thus, after the window sashes are once adjusted the upper, lowered, one cannot be further lowered or opened from the outside, nor can the lower, raised sash be lifted from the outside, for the reason that they are locked on the inside by the holder whichL is inaccessible, and unauthorized ingress is prevented.
The slots provide for Jrree movement of the bail er safii'iging bolt, and perinit the rollerto adapt itself to irregularities on the surface of the upper sash bar, and if desired the roller may be corrugated as shown to insure a close 'frictional contact with the 'friction surfaces l0 and 5. Usually one oji the holders will be sufficient to retain the Window sashes in adjusted position, but oi" course one inay be used at each side of the sash if desired to insure stability and {irniness in the holders.
Having thus lully described niy invention, what l cla-ini and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- A Window sash holder consisting of an integral bracket lia-vingan attaching base' plate an inclined front plate, vertical side 'Walls and rearwardhT declining` straight slots in said Walls lying` in a plane approximately perpendicular to the viront plate, a U-shape bail journaled in the Walls, a roller journaled on the bail toy co-act with the front plater and said bail adapted to 'form a pivot and the upper ends of the slots located in positioiny whereby the roller malsY be swung over the top et the bracket and rest on the rear edges of the Walls of the bracket.
ln testiinoiq7 whereof l ai'lix my signature.
