Be it known that we. EDWARD B. Arrrn earn and WiLLnnr H. Ynoimns, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Glue Mixing and Preserving Apparatus; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full. clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a glue mixing and preserving machine by means of which vegetable glue may be thoroughly mixed to a proper consistency and after said mixing may be held for an indefinite length of time in proper shape for application to work which is to be glued together. i It is a primary object and purpose for the present invention to construct a device of this character which is simple in construction and particularly efiicient in operation.
For an understanding of the invention and the construction embodying the same. reference may be had to the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which;

Like reference characters refer to like parts in the two figures of the drawing.
.ln the construction a substantially cylindrical tank 1, made of sheet metal, preferably, boiler iron, is closed at its ends by end members 2 and 8. An opening is made in the upper side of the tank around which a casting 4: is placed and secured, the same having an outturned flange 5 against which a cover plate 6 may be placed and the same hermetically sealed to the flange by means of bolts 7. A metal jacket 8 is placed around the tank and spaced a short distance therefrom making a closed space into which steam may be entered. The tank has an outlet in its lower side from which a pipe 9 leads and in the length of which a controlling valve 10 is placed.
A shaft 11 extends lengthwise of and through the tank passing through suitable packing, indicated at 12, at each end of the tank and being mounted in suitable bear- Specification of Letters Patent.

A pipe 15 leads into and through the end 3 of the tank and is connected with any suitable source of compressed air. A branch pipe 16 connects with the pipe 15 and is of use to carry water, being led to any suitable source of water supply. An additional pipe 17 likewise connects with the pipe 15 and is used to carry steam, being connected with any suitable source of steam supply. From the pipe 17 a pipe 18 leads to and empties into the jacketed space around the tank 1 which is made by the jacket 8 so that steam may be carried thereinto to raise the contents of the tank to a desired tempera ture. A pipe 19 connects the water pipe 16 with said pipe 18 as shown. The outlet pipes 20 lead from said space around the tank 1 and connect with a waste pipe 21.
in practice the vegetable glue is placed in the tank and the necessary amount of water entered into the tank by turning the proper valve from the water pipe to the pipe 15 and this water may be raised to any desired temperature by the mixing of steam therewith. The various valves shown in pipes 15, 16, 1T, 18 and 19 are used to control the entrance of water, air or steam into the tank and of water or steam into jacketed space around the tank. The shaft 11 is driven and a thorough mixture of the glue and water is made, the paddles stirring the mixture to proper consistency and making it entirely homogeneous. During this stirring heat may 3e applied to the tank by entering steam or hot water into the space between the tank and the jacket 8 and the glue held at a desired temperature. After the glue is entirely mixed and worked, the cover 6 is applied and sealed absolutely air tight. The glue as it is used may be taken from the tank through the outlet pipe 9 by opening the valve 10, and forced through said pipe by introducing the compressed air into the tank through the pipe 15; and the quantity forced out will be dependent upon the length of time that the air is per mitted to pass into the tank and the pressure force of the air.
After the tank has been sealed the glue will remain in proper consistency for use for practically an indefinite length of time. There is no necessity of further working the same from day to day, nor of adding any ingredients to the glue or removing any shell of dried glue at the upper side of the glue Within the tank. A quantity of glue once mixed is held within the tank and may be removed therefrom in quantities as desired until the entire amount has been taken and should this period cover several. days it makes no difference in the quality of the glue. Vegetable glue is of very heavy and thick consistency, must be homogeneous throughout and the mechanism shown and described is: fully capable of reducing the glue and mixing it to the right consistency while the sealing of the tank when the glue is once mixed preserves it in proper shape for use as long as is necessary. The construction has been used practically for several months and works perfectly in every res ect.
e claim:
1. In combination, a tank provided with an entrance opening in the upper side thereof, means for sealing said opening, an outlet pipe leading from the lower part of the tank, a pipe leading into the upper portion of the tank adapted to carry compressed air into the tank, Water and steam pipes connected with the air pipe, means for stirring and mixing materials Within the tank, means for heating the tank, and valves for controlling the entrance of either water, steam or compressed air into the tank, substantially as described.
2. In combination, a tank provided with an entrance opening in the upper side thereof, means for hermetically sealing said opening, an outlet pipe leading from the lower part of the tank, a shaft extending lengthwise of thetank and mounted for rotation, a plurality of stirring paddles attached to the shaft within thetank, a pipe leading into the upper portion of the tank and adapted to carry compressed air into the tank, water and steam pipes connected with the air pipe, a jacket surrounding the tank, a pipe leading from the steam pipe into the space between the jacket and tank, a pipe connecting the water pipe with said last mentioned steam carrying pipe, and valves in the various pipes for controlling the passage of air, water and steam, substantially as described.
