HERMAN F. C. SCHULTZ AND FRED W. SCHULTZ, OF YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO.
FASTENING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 11, 1922.
Application filed April 12, 1921. Serial No. 460,672.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HERMAN F. C. SCHULTZ and FRED -W. SoI-Iunrz, citizens of the United States, residing at Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of 'Ohio, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in Fastening Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fastening devices, the primary object being to produce an efiicient device for tying together the free ends of open metal rings designed to se cure traction or non-skid members to rubber tires, whereby the same may be securely attached, and readily detached.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the wheel with our invention attached.
Figure 2 is a sectional view on an enlarged scale on line 2-2, Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a view in perspective, showing one of the four quarter sections of which our device is preferably made.
Figures 4 and 5 are details, illustrating the manner in which the different sections are locked together.
Figure 6 is an illustration of our holding ring formed in one piece. rather than in tions as it would preferably be made.
Similar reference characters designate corresponding parts of the device throughout the various figures of the drawings.
AA, Figure 2, represent oppositely disposed holding rings, which we preferably form of four quarter sections, a a o and a as illustrated and designated in Figure 1. It is obvious, however, that these rings may be formed of one section only, as shown in Figure 6, or of such number of sections as may be desired.
To rings AA we secure a plurality of cross-sections or non-skid elements 79?), which may, of course, be of any desired type, hav ing shown in the drawings a rigid cross bar in oval formation to conform to the crosssection of the tire, carrying non-skid lugs 00 on its outer or traction surface.
One end of each of two of the quarter sections, a and a as shown in the drawings, is provided with a flatportion d, in which are formed a series of notches ce. The opposite end of a is provided with an eyeor opening f, while the opposite end of a carries the outstanding pin g.
One end of each of the other quarter sections, a and a as shown in the drawings, is provided with an inwardly turned loop or slot IL. The opposite end of a is provided with an eye or opening 7", while the opposite end of (6 is provided with the outstanding pin 9. Loosel and slidably mounted upon a? and 0 adjacent the integral loop h, is the locking loop or link i.
In assembling our device and securing it to the wheel, the flattened end (Z of section 0, is passed through the slot 71. on the adjacent end of section a, and after seating the inner wall of the slot h in one of the notches e, the sliding link or loop 2' mounted upon 00* is moved forward to engage the flat end or portion of a thus binding these two ends of a and a, securely together. For the purpose of retaining the holding link 2' in its locking position, the cotter pin j may be used.
In a similar manner, the diametrically oppositely disposed adjacent ends, a and 0 are locked together in exactly the same manner, and further description is unnecessary.
The adjacent ends of sections a and and of a and a* respectively, are fastened together by engaging the pin g in the eye f, where they may be secured by the cotter pin 70.
WVe claim:
1. In a device of the character described. a separable fastener, one element of which has a flattened portion provided with a.
series of notches, the other element carrying a loop bent at substantially right angles and a link slidably mounted upon said second element.
2. In a device of the character described, a separable fastener, one element of which has a flattened portion provided with a series of notches, the other element carrying a loop bent at substantially right angles, the inner wall of which is adapted to engage said notches, and a link slidably mounted upon said second element.
In testimony whereof we hereunto afiixed our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
