Description

c. DOBBINS. Combined Fenders andAsh-Sifters.
N0. 142,214, Patented Augu t26,l873.
TES
WILLIAM G. DOBBINS, or ZANESVILLE, OHIO.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,214, dated August 26, 1873; application filed July 28, 1873.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM 0. Domains, of Zanesville, in the county of Muskingum and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Oombined Fender and Ash-sifting Attachment; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
My invention is a combined fender and ashsifting attachment to be used in connection with an ordinary fire-place fire-grate for the purpose of separating the ashes from the unburnt pieces of coal that fall from the firegrate, so that the latter can be readily replaced upon the fire freed from ashes, all as will be hereinafter explained.
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation. Fig. 2 is a top View of the sifting attachment, and Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the hearth-plate.
In the drawing, A is a cast-iron hearth-plate, in curved form in plan view, supported upon three or more legs, a a a, and corresponding in length with the distance between the jambs of the fire-place. Supported upon this hearthplate is the ash-siftingattachment B, the front portion of which is an imperforate plate and the rear portion a grate, the bars of which run at right angles to the fire-grate. This ashsifting attachment is prevented from casual displacement upon thehearth-plate by a tongue projecting from the under side thereof in front and fitting a mortise formed by two ribs cast on the inside of the hearth'plate, and a feathered edge of the latter fitting a groove in the ash-siftin g attachment. The side and end bars of the grated portion of the ash-sifting attachment extend above the level of the others, and thereby prevent the coal thereupon sliding or rolling ofi' during the operation of the removal of the attachment. The front of the ash-sifting attachment is provided with posts 0 and railing at, forming the fender.
In use the hearth-plate is placed in front of the firegrate, and the ash-sifting attachment upon it, so as to receive and separate the ashes and unburnt coal that fall upon it, the ashes sifting through the grated portion of the attachment into an ash-pan, and leaving the coal upon the attachment, whence it can be transferred or replaced upon the fire.
By the use of this invention not only is a saving of coal effected, but much dirt and dust avoided.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The ash-sifting attachment B, combined with fender d and hearth-plate A, as and for the purpose specified.
WILLIAM C. DOBBINS.
