Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 11, 1922.
Application flled'october 15, 1920. Serial No. 417,097.
. To all whom it may comer n:
Be it known that 1, ANDREW A. KRAMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tank Constructions; and I dodeclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skill'ed'in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This, invention'relates to tank construction and among the objects of the invention is the provision of means for reinforcing or bracing the tank structure in a convenient and inexpensive manner.
In carryin out the invention I prefer to arrange long1tudinal, tubular braces which serve the dual purpose of-bracing the tank and providing dispensing conduits through which the fluid in the tank may be drawn therefrom. a
In the ordinary construction of a com partmental tank, pipes lead from the various compartments to the rear of the vehicle and are provided with valves or cocks adapted to be controlled so that the fluid may be 'drawn off when the occasion demands. If the tankis to be braced,.tie rods, longitudi'nals or other means are employed for this purpose. I have found that the longitudinal conduits can be so arranged with respect to the tank structure that they can be utilized as braces and I have, therefore, illustrated such a construction in the in the plane of the end sheets and partition sheets. The bolsters ha p laterally extendmg flanges 6 whereby they may be secured to longitudinal sills 7 or other suitable supports if desired. The sills 7 may or may not be used, according to the whim of the manufacturer. If they are used, however, they serve as additional braces for the tank structure.
Extending through the webs 8 of the several bolsters are longitudinally disposed, hollow brace members 9, 10 and 11. The hollow member 9 extends to the first compartment formed by the end sheet 1, the partition sheet 3 and the body portion 12; the hollow member 10 extends through the bolsters for the end sheet 1, the partition sheets 3 and 4 and the end sheet 2 and is connected to. the compartment formed by the partition sheet 4,,the end sheet-2 and the body portion 13; and hollow member 11 extends through the webs of the bolsters for the end sheets 1 and 2 and the partition sheets 3 and 4 and it is connected to the intermediate compartment or chamber formed by the partition sheets 3 and 4 and the body portion 14. The tubular connections 15 and 16, by means of which the members 10 and 11 are connected "to their respective compartments, are in the form of funnels. as will be clearly shown in Fig. 1, and slightly ofit'set so that the members 10 and 11 may be on opposite sides of the longitudinal center of the tank.
The ends of the tubular members or pipes are preferably plugged, as at 17, (Fig. 3), the plugs being secured preferably by autogenous welding, as at 17'. may be resorted to, as indicated at 18 (Fig. 3) for securing the tubular members to the respective webs of the bolsters so that the partition sheets, end sheets and longitudinally extending, tubular brace members are rigidly connected together whereby the tubular members constitute brace rods as well as conduits through which the contents of the tank may pass to the dispensing nozzles or cocks 19, 20 and 21.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that a tank constructed in accordance with my invention will have considerable rigidity and that the novel manner of utilizing the tubular members both for conduits and braces is an important advance in tank construction.
Spot welding V What I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is:
1. A Wagon tank having end sheets and partition sheets provided with integral bolsters, dispensing pipes extending the length of the tank and connecting the bolsters, and means for effecting communication between the pipes and the tank.
2. A wagon tank having end sheets and partition sheets provided with integral bolsters, pipes passing through the webs of the bolsters to brace the tank structure, means for eiiecting communication between the tank and the pipes, and dispensing nozzles on the pipes.
3. A wagon tank having end sheets and partition sheets provided with integral bolsters, and truss rods passing through the bol-' sters to brace them.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
ANDREW A. KRAMER.
