CLOTHES DRIER'.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July et, 1&2?.
Application filed December 18, 1920'. Serial No. 431,650;
To' all whom t may concern Y Beit known that I, lVILLrnM C. HUGHES, acitizen or the United'. States, residing at New Hftvem in the county of New Haven' and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful improvements inv a Clothes Drier; and I do hereby declare the following to be a-ull, clear, and exact description of the invention', such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make andl use the same.
Thisy inventionvv relates to a clothes drier, and more particularly to a device designed for attachment tov a window frame;
'Ehe object is to provide, in: connection with, an outwardly extend-ing supporting element, a slidableA drying fra-me; with vparticular means for moving they latter toward and away fromrthe window frame:
A further object is to provide a collapsibl'e drying frame, means tor mounting the latter forl movement toward andA away Jfrom: the wall1 of a building, andV devices for sup-Y porting the mounting means with reference tothe wall.
A still` further object is to provide a device whichv shalll include a transverse bar for connection with the wallI on the opposite sides of a window frame, a supporting ele ment constituting a supporting frame and: having' rigid connection: with the bar, a collapsible drying trame carried by the supporting frame,l and a threaded element for moving the drying frame towardiandi away 'from the window'. i Y
Vitli the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of elements hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that modifications may be made within the scope of the claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying' drawings:
Figure l is a top plan view of a clothes drier constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a view in side elevation of a clothes drier.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on a vertical plane extending centrally and transversely through the clothes drier.
Figure 4 is a sectional view on the plane indicated by the line 4 4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line 5 5 of Figure 1.
Figure 6 is a sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line 6-6- of Figure 1, and i Figure Z is a sectionalv view taken on the plane indicatedi by the line 7-7 of Figure 1.
Mounted transversely of the frame 10 of a window, and at a suitable distance above thesill 1:1, is a bar 12 rig-idly secured in position and having mounted thereon a number of fix-tures including pulleys 15, for use in connection with. lines f5".
Extending perpendicularly with reference to bar 12 is a hollow supportingV frame 16, although comprising at pair of parallel elements l? and. 11S, spaced' apart and? serving to mount the drying traine per se. nele'- ment 19' provided with a bore 2O is located between the outer ends of elementsl and' 18,. and passing' loosely therethrough is a bar 22 constituting one ofl the principal elements 'of theV drying frame. Y
'Flie frame just referred' to further in cludes# collapsible arms 21E and 25, connected by the cords-26 uponl which the` garments are to be hung. It willi be understood that when the deviceis not in use, the cables 26 and 15 may be disengaged! fronr certain` of the pulleys and' the arms 241;Vv folded outwardly toward onea'vnother while the arms 25 Iare foldedv inwardly towards the sides of the supporting frame I6.
A tlfireaded member 30 between the inner ends ot elements 17 and 18 receives the main screw, orthreadied rodf V3l operated by a detaclulble'handleA or'crank; 3Q, the outer end oaf.' this screw passing-.to the guiding element slidable between the elements 1'? and 18 o'f the hollow supporting frame 16. This guiding element is rigid with reference to bar 2Q, and the iframe or more particularly the element 25 thereof is rigid with reference to member 33,`so that upon the rotation of the screw in one direction, the entire frame is carried outwardly, sliding along the hollow supporting frame 16,-01 if the direction of rotation of the screw is reversed the frame is caused to move inwardly, and toward the window.
An eye bolt 35 on the hollow supporting frame 16 provides means for connecting a guy wire 36 with the window frame, for supporting the drier in the correct position. Another guy wire, serving a similar purpose is designated 38 and connected with the outer ends of the arms 24 and with the window frame 10.
connected therewith and including a guid-V ing device at its outer end, a drying frame including a guiding device slidable in the supportingframe, and a rotatable threaded element for imparting movement to the drying frame through the guiding element carried thereby.
- 3. In a device-of the class described, a bar for connection `with the wall of a building on opposite sides of a window iframe, means for connecting a clothes line with said bar, a supporting frame extending perpendicularly with reference to the bar and rigidly connected therewith, said supporting frame comprising a pair of spaced parallelv members, a drying frame slidable along the supporting frame, a guiding member carried by the drying frame and directly engaging the supporting frame,'said drying frame including a central bar connected with the guiding element,V a second guiding member mounted at the-outer end of .the supporting frame and cooperating with the central bar of the dryin'g frame, and a threaded rod for imparting 4movement tothe drying frame through the guiding member first named.
4; In a device of the class described, a bar v to be mounted transversely of a window frame, a supporting frame comprising a plurality of spaced parallel members rigidly connected' with theV bar7 a threaded member between the spaced members, a slidable guid- *ing member movable along the supporting frame including a central portion extending between the spaced members, va screwpassing through the threaded member and imparting movement to the guiding member,
afdr ino' frame with which the O'uidinc b C D ing frame, a drier frameadjustable on saidsupporting vtraineand including collapsible members, a; stationary supporting bar adapted to be secured to a wall, cabley connections between `said collapsible members,r and cable connections between one of said collapsiblemembers and said supporting bar. 6.y A clothes drier comprising a support. ing bar, a supporting frame mounted on said supporting bar, said supporting bar-being adapted to be secured to arstationary-support, a .drier :trame adjustableon said Vsup'- porting frame and carrying clothes receiving and supporting members, and clothes receiving and supporting members extended fromV said drier frame to said supporting bar.` .7'. AA clothes drierV Vcomprising a support ing b ar adapted to be secured to a stationary support, a supporting frame mountedY on said supportingbanlan adjustable drying frame mounted on vsaid supporting* frame, connections between said dryingtrame and said supporting bar, `andrmeansV to adjust said drying frame on said supporting frame. In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses. Y p V WILLIAMC. HUGHES. Y Witnesses:
