ALFRED SMALLWOOD, OF LONEDON, ENGLAND.
FURNACE.
Application filed March 8,
T 0 czZZ whom. it may concern.'
Be it known that l. ALFRED SMALLwooo, a subject of the Kingdom of Great Britain, residing at l2 Hargraveldanx, Highgate, London, N., in the county of Middlesex, England, metallurgist, have invented certain new and useful improvements in or 1Eclating to Furnaces, of which the following is a specification.
This invention comprises certain improvements in or relating to furnaces, suitable for the heating or treatment of plates and the like.
According to the present invention, the heat is adapted to be admitted to the working chamber by a series of ports which advantageously are individually regulable, and another series of ports is provided for admitting to the working chamber advantageously in proximity to the ports first mentioned, air which has been heated in a recuperator located below the working chamber.
ln order that this invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into practice, reference may be had to the appended explanatory drawings, upon which Figure l is a sectional side elevation of a furnace according to the present invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional end elevation of the furnace shown in Figure l.
Figure 3 is a sectional plan of the furnace shown in Figures l and 2, the plane of section being on line 1.-2 of Figure 2..
Figure et is a sectional plan of the furnace shown in Figures l, 2 and 3, the plane of section being on line 3 4 of Figure 2.
ln a convenient embodiment of the present invention, the working chamber a is located in the upper part of the furnace, and below the said working chamber a longitudinal green gas flue is provided. Gas generators c, c are in communication with this green gas flue at one extremity. From the said green gas flue on both sides, ports or passages Z extend upwardly from the working chamber at intervals along the length of the latter.
Below the green gas flue a recuperator system is provided by which the air for combustion is adapted to be heated by the waste furnace gases from the working chamber. rlhis recuperator system may comprise a series of longitudinal flues e to which the waste gas descends from one extremity of Specification of Letters .'Eatent,
1920. Serial No. 364,266.
the working chamber by way of ports f and a chamber g, and from the other extremities of which the waste gas passes to the stack by way of a common transverse flue Zt. Aidjacent to such other end a cold air flue z' is provided from which air ascends to intermediate air ilues j extending longitudinally between the waste gas recuperator flues c. it the other extremity of the recuperator system, i. e. the extremity remote from the gas producer, these air ilues descend into a common transverse hot air flue 7c from which on each side of the furnace an air flue Z, Z extends longitudinally on either side of the recuperator system. From each of these air flues last mentioned branch flues mv or ports extend upwardly at intervals along the length of the furnace and terminate in ports admitting to the working chamber at intervals along the length of the same in proximity to, an-d preferably above, the gas admission ports d. Each ascending branch may feed two ports n, for which purpose it may be of T-form in elevation. The air ports as well as the gas ports being individually regulable, more or less heat can be imparted to any part of the working chamber, and the actual combustion may advantageously take place within the working chainber upon the admixture of the recuperate-d air with the green gas admitted by the gas ports leading from the main gas liuc located between the working chamber and the recuperator system. ln this main gas flue the gas is adapted to flow towards the charging door of the furnace, which thereby tends to prevent ingress of cold air therethrough. Gas ingress ports 0' may be located across the end of the furnace remote from the charging door, said gas ports 0 being adapted to extend from the end of the green gas flue o. rlhe air flues Z are extended to positions p on each side of the gas producers, at which positions they extend upwardly as shown at Figure 3. At an appropriate level lateral lines g extend from the llues p and terminate in air ingress ports 71 admitting to the extremity of the working chamber in proximity to the gas ingress ports 0.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure byLetters Fatent is A furnace, including a gas generator, a green gas flue communicating with said gas generators, a working chamber above said flue, a recuperator below said flue, a plurality of conduits extending from said flue to said Working chamber and including individually regulable ports, 'discharge vmeans connecting said Working chamber and re-v cuperator, air flues located on each side vof the furnace and passing through said reeuperator, and fflues each extending vertimy hand.
