Soi-iUMAormn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Southbridgc, in the county of IVorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Ophthalmic Mountings, of which the follow ing is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in ophthalmic mountings and has particular reference to that type of mounting having lens receiving rims or frames formed from composition or nonsmetallic material.
One of the principal objects of the present invention is the provision of novel and improved means for uniting the several parts of a mounting of this character.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a novel and efficient device which shall be relatively invisible and inconspicuous but which will securely serve to unite a bridge, temple or other metallic fitting with a non-metallic frame and prevent relative twisting as well as disengagement of the parts.
Other objects and advantages of my im proved construction should be readily apparent by reference to the following specification taken in connection with the accom panying drawings, and it will be understood that I may make any modifications in the specific details of construction shown and described within the scope of the appended claims without departing from or exceeding the spirit of the invention.

Specification of Letters Patent.

In the drawings, in which similar characters of reference are employed to denote corresponding parts throughoutthe views, the numeral 1 represents the rim, which may be formed from composition material, shell, zylonite or the like while the numeral :2 designates the bridge member shown in Figure I as a composition or non-metallic portion provided with the metallic attaching por tions 3, which may be either secured to the ends of the bridge member or may extend centrally therethrough. aspreferred, the particular form of bridge forming no essential feature of the present invention. The present invention relates more especially to the manner of connection of the bridge end piece, or other fitting to the frame or rim member 1.
This is accomplished in the form illustrated in Figure II, by securing to the end of the bridge 3 the doubled wire 4a which extends through a suitable aperture in the rim 1. and has the laterally deflected. portions 5 lying in the interior groove 6 at the base of the lens receiving groove 7. These portions 5 terminate in the outwardly deflected. ends 8 suitably riveted or spun over as at 9. This construction has the ad vantage that there is no exterior metallic part other than the arm of the fitting 3, but a relatively small hole is required in the rim to receive the pair of metal arm members 4, while on account of their lateral extension and embedding in the rim they form a wide brace holding the frame and bridge against relative twisting or distorting movement, being slightly held by being spun over. and being further retained and locked in position when the mounting is set up through the presence of a lens, such as 10, which fitting into the groove as the rim is tightened bears against the arms 5 and tends to prevent any possible accidental loosening thereof.
Figure III illustrates a slightly different form of my invention in which the member 3 bears a plate portion 11 carrying arms 12 similar to the arms 5 which are bent together as the plate is inserted into a suitable semicircular recess milled therefor in the frame and subsequently bent down into the grooves 6 where they will securely hold the parts and again be pressed in position by the lens 10, as is specifically illustrated in connection with Figure IV. In this instance both the arms 12 and the width of the plate 11 serve to resist relative twisting movement of the parts. 7
Figure V illustrates another modification of the same idea in which there is the surface shoe or member 13 engaging the outer face of the frame. In this figure it is shown as split and provided with the end piece portions 1 L, although it could equally well have the bridge secured thereto instead of the end pieces. Secured to the end or terminus of the plate 13 is a staple or securing member 15 having the prong portions 16 bent down into the supplemental locking member receiving groove 6 at the base of the lens receiving groove 7 for securing the parts in place. For convenience of understanding one member has been shown locked and the other unlocked or in semi-assembled relationship.
Figure VI shows another embodiment of this form of the invention, in which a single unitary member comprising the shoe portion 17 and terminal arms 18 are made use of, these arms being of sufficient length to project through the frame and be bent down in the groove 6 in the manner hitherto described.
Figures VII and VIII bring out a Variation of the construction in which the shoe 19 carries the locking members 20 so disposed as to be bent laterally of the frame in place of longitudinally of the groove in the embedded portions 21, as clearly shown inFigure VIII, the spreading of these ends at 21 againserving to properly lock the inwardly extending plate or arm portions 20 and attached fitting 8 in position on the frame.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction of my improved device should be readily apparent, and it will be seen that I have provided simple and efli-v portions of an eyeglass or spectacle frame, which connection may be easily applied, will be readily invisible, eliminate the necessity for unsightly exterior sleeves or similar patches, which will'hold the parts together without liability of twisting, and in which the pierced portions of the non-metallic frame are at parts distant one from the other and the fittings preferably so interengagedwith the frame as to brace rather than weaken it.
I claim:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a composition rim member having a semi-circular slot milled therethrough, of a fitting having a plate portion conforming in shape to the shape of the slot, and having projecting terminal portions embedded in the material of the rim for securing the parts together. 7
2. In an ophthalmic mounting, the combination with a composition rim member, of a metallic fitting therefor having a plate embedded edgewise in the rim member and having pliable arms carried by the plate embedded throughout their length in the composition rim member to secure the plate in position, whereby the edgewise embedment of the plate prevents relative twisting of the parts and the embedment of the arms prevents withdrawal of the plate;
3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a composition rim member having an interior lens receiving groove, of a metallic fitting embedded in the rim member, said fitting having divergent attaching portions lying along the groove and terminating in reverse outwardly extending locking portions, substantially as illustrated.
