PAN WITH OVERFLOW-ALARM DEVICE.
Application filed February 23, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTHONY RENDA, a subject of Italy,- and resident of 447 West 28th St., New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pans with Overflow-Alarm Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pan with overflow alarm device.
An object of this invention is to produce a useful and efficient drip pan having a large compartment and a smaller compartment, the latter compartment being provided with a removable overflow alarm device adapted to operate automatically and electrically.
Another object of this invention is to. provide in such a pan a removable overflow device or attachment being substantially one unit, the entire unit being subject to withdrawal from the pan at will without any dificulty.
A further object of this invention is to provide in such overflow alarm device a vertically adjustable preferably non-metallic frame and means for keeping the frame in adjusted position, said frame being so formed that it has two parallel right angu- 'lar extensions the upper of which is adapted to cover the smaller compartment or receptacle when the frame is placed therein.
A still further object of this invention is to provide in such overflow alarm device a' lever pivotally attached to the wall of the frame provided at one end with a float, said lever being provided with a T shaped metallic extension or bar projecting in the frame.
Still further objects of this invention are to provide in such device a pair of metallic contactsor terminals secured in the wall of the frame disposed near the metallic extension of the lever, an electrical 'source and an alarm supported by the frame, said alarm and terminals being so connected to the electrical source that when the T-shaped metallic extension contacts with the terminals, the alarm will sound.
The above and further objects in view will more fully be understood from the following description and'accompanying drawings forming part of this specification and in which:

In the drawings there is disclosed a drip pan preferably metallic divided into two compartments or receptacles 11 and 12, the former being large and adapted to hold the water, the latter being much smaller and adapted to receive the apparatus operating the overflow alarm device 13. The metallic partition 14, separating pan 10 into the two compartments 11 and 12 is secured to the former in any suitable manner and has a central slot 14 for the purpose indicated below. It is preferable to have the end 15 of pan 10 straight as shown in Fig. 1, there a by forming a box-like receptacle for containing the overflow alarm apparatus.
The overflow alarm device 13 is assembled to form a single unit. The frame 16 of the device is made preferably of nonconductive or non-metallic substance such as wood, and is of such dimensions as to fit into receptacle 12. This frame is so constructed and formed that it has two parallel right angular extension plates 17 and 18 joined by the wall 19, the upper of which is adapted to cover the top of receptacle 12, when placed therein.
The frame 16 is made vertically adjustable by slotting, longitudinally the upper portion of wall 19 and shaping the lower portion of the latter so as to provide a sliding fit (see Fig. 3 at 20). Frame 16 may befixed in adjusted position by means of wing screws 21. I r
In the upper portion of wall 19 there is formed an aperture 22 in which is pivotally attached in any suitable manner the lever 28, said lever being provided with a T-shaped metallic or conductive extension or bar 24 projecting in frame 16. Secured to extension 18 of frame 16 are the brackets 27 adapted to receive the batteries 28, the latter being the electrical source. There is also secured to extension 18 the alarm or hell 29.
As shown in Fig. 3 terminals 26 and bell 29 are so connected through wires 30 to batteries 28 that when the T-shaped extension 24 contacts with the terminals the bell will sound. I I
As stated before the overflow alarm device is assembled to form a single unit. In order to place it in position all that is necessary is to insert frame 16, which carries the apparatus described above, into receptacle 12in such manner that lever slips into slot 14 of partition 14. When in this position extension plate 17 of frame 16 completely covers receptacle 12 thereby' preventin'g extraneons'matter from entering therein. By means of wingscrews 21, frame is may be adjusted to a desired height, within limitations. This adjustable feature of frame 16 serves two purposes, namely, first to adapt the overflow alarm device to pans of different heights and secondly, to adjust the float so as to operate at a desirable height of water in the pan.
From the foregoing it can be seen that overflow alarm device 18 may be used on pans not so equipped by slightly altering Also by 'encasing this alarm device in a suitable receptacle it may be used in conjunction with any pan by merely placing it therein.
The advantage of having the batteries and bell connected to terminals 26 and the frame made non-conductive is that the apparatus will not operate unless lever extension 24 comes in contact with the latter. This arrangement prevents a ground occurring as would sometimes happen if one electrical connection was made directly on the lever.
The operation of the combination forming this invention is evident from the above description. As the pan fills with water, the float rises carrying with it the attached VVhe'n the water reaches a height to which the alarm device has been set, the T-shaped extension of the lever contacts "with the terminals thereby closing, the elec for drawing out the water therefrom.

What is claimed is:
1. In combination with a pan having a large compartment and a smaller compartment, the said compartments being sepa rated by a permanent partition, of a remov' able overflow alarm device comprising in combination a vertically adjustable non-metallic frame adapted to fit into said smaller compartment, said frame being provided with upper and lower parallel extension plates, the upper plate being adapted to cover the smaller compartment, means for adjusting said frame, metallic terminals secured in and extending outwardly from the wall of said frame, a lever pivotally connected to the wall of said frame, said lever being provided "with a float at one end and a metallic extension adapted to contact with said metallic terminals when the float is in overflow position, a bell and batteries {supported by said frame, said bell and batteries being so connected with each other and with said terminals that when the extension contacts with the terminals a "complete electric circuit is formed, and means for securing said bell and batteries to the frame.
2. In combination with a drip pan of "a receptacle disposed at one end of the pan, and a removable alarm device comprising in combination an adjustable non-metallic frame disposed within said receptacle, said frame being provided with a top member adapted to completely close said receptacle, a pair'of metallic terminals secured in and extending within said frame, aleve'r pivotally connectedto said frame, said lever being provided with a float secured at one of its ends and a metallic extension adapted to contact with said metallic terminals, when the float is in overflow position, a bell and batteries supported by said frame, and
means for connecting said bell, batteries and terminals.
3. In a pan having a large and smaller compartment, a removable overflow alarm device comprising in combination an adjustable frame disposed within the smaller compartment, said frame being provided with a top member adapted to completely close said smaller compartment, terminals insulatedly attached to the frame, a lever pivotally connected to the frame carrying a float and disposed so as to operate within the large compartment, said lever beingprovided with a connecting bar adapted to con tact with said terminals when the float "is in overflow position, a bell and an electric ANTHONY RENDA.
