UNITED STATES PATENT FFIo.
SAMUEL 1). HILL, or DowNIEvILLE, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CANDLESTICKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,162, dated August 26, 1873'; application filed May 24, 1873.
To all whom it me,- concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL D. HILL, of Downieville, in the county of Sierra and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Oandlestick, of which the following is a specification:
1n the accompanying drawin g, Figure 1 represents a top view of myimproved candlestick; Fig. 2, a vertical section of the same -on the line 0 c, Fig. 1; Figs. 3 and 4, side views of the candle-sockets, one bcin g detachable from the stick, the other forming a part of the same; and Fig. 5, a top view of the socket modification, as represented in Fig. 4.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to so improve the candlestick in common'u'se that the socket will adjust itself to the size of the candle and hold it firmly in a vertical position. My invention consists in arranging the socket of the candlestick for different sizes of candles, by making it in two pieces connected by a slotted band-spring.
In the drawing,-A represents the body of the candlestick, consisting of the disk-shaped support B, the hollow stem 0, and the conical cup D soldered to stem 0 around socket E.
The socket E may be made detachable from stem (3, or form a part thereof, as desired. The socket E and stem 0 are suitably connected to part B in the usual manner by screwbolt a, cover-plate b, washer d, and nut f. The socket E is arranged to adjust itself tothe different'sizes of the candles commonly in use, by
having a part, E, of its cylindrical circumference detached and connected to the other part by means of a circular band-spring, 0. One end of spring 0 is secured firmly to part E; the other end acts by its slot g on screw or lug g, expanding readily by pressure exerted on part E. The detachable piece E is provided with a smooth joint at one side, and a joint with a square interlocking tooth at the other. The cup D extends around socket E, being of conical shape, and slightly curved. The tallow or other material of which the candles are made collects in cup D and prevents the greasing of the other parts of the candlestick. 7 Perforations i of the socket E, near the lowest part of cup D, serve to draw all the tallow into the socket, when the candle is burned down far enough, that the heat of the socket will melt the tallow. The wick consumes thereby all available tallow, and leaves the socket as clean as if it were wiped out. Another candle may, therefore, soon be placed into socket without requiring special cleaning, and permitting thereby the full consumption of the candle without loss.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The socket E having detachable part E, to be adjusted to candle by spring 6 having slot 9 and lug g, as described.
SAMUEL D. HILL.
