MINE FIEE-FIGHTING APPARATUS.
emes.
Application filed. May 25,
To all to 720m it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN KLnwANnoH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Royalton, in the county of Franklin, State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Mine Fire 'ighting Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to mine fire fighting apparatus and has for its object to provide a device of this character, comprising preferably an electrically driven car, to which car is coupled a tank car, and to provide hose connections with the tank car whereby various leads of hose may be led to the various branches of the mine. Also to provide the front of the car with a nozzle directed forwardly and having a hose connection with the tank car, thereby providing means whereby as the motor driven car moves into the tunnel of the mine, the water will be directed on the fire therein.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a sectional view through a portion of the mine tunnel showing the fire fighting apparatus therein.
Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view through a tunnel and some of the wing tunnels showing the apparatus in position for use.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a mine tunnel and three various wings which extend outwardly from the tunnel. Disposed in the tunnel l is a'track i on which the fire fighting apparatus runs.
The fighting apparatus comprises a preferably electrically driven car 5 and a trailed tank car 6, which is coupled to the car 5 as at 7. The forward end of the car 5 is provided with a platform compartment 8 on which the operator 9 stands for operating and controlling the apparatus. The forward end of the car 5 is provided with a forwardly extending nozzle 10, which n0z- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July a 1922.
1920. Serial no. 384,080.
zle has connected to it a rearwardly extending pipe 11, which extends to the tank 6 from which it gets its supply of water, there being a flexible connection 12 so that the pipe will not be broken as the apparatus as a whole moves around curves. Power for operating the car 5 may be obtained from an overhead wire 13 with which a trolley wheel 14 contacts, however, it is to be understood that the car 5 may be run on storage batteries or if so desired an internal combustion engine may be used. The forward end of the tank 6 has secured thereto in any suitable manner a container 15, in which container various hose sections 16 may be dis posed. The hose sections 16 after the apparatus has been run into the mine may be removed from the container 15 and connected to any of the outlets 17 carried by the forward end of the tank 6. By providing the auxiliary hose sections 16 it will be seen that lines of hose may be used by fire fighters in the wings 3, at the same time that the nozzle 10 is directing a stream forwardly in the main tunnel 1. As the fires in the wings 3 are extinguished the apparatus moves forwardly, extinguishing the fire in the main tunnel and the wings as they are reached are entered by firemen with the hose 16 so that the fires therein may be controlled and extinguished.
From the above it will be seen that the fire fighting apparatus for fighting fires in -mines is provided which is simple in con struction and one wherein, as the apparatus enters the tunnel, a stream of water will be projected forwardly into the tunnel so as to extinguish the fire therein, said water being forced from the tank preferably by pressure in the tank. It will also be seen that means is provided whereby as the fire fighting apparatus advances, the fires in various wing tunnels may be extinguished and controlled by means of the hose line 16.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is A fire fighting apparatus for mines and the like, said apparatus comprising a motor driven car and a trailed tank adapted to he run into a mine tunnel, a coupling connection between the motor driven car and the trailed tank, a horizontally disposed nozzle extending forwardly from the motor driven I car at its forward end at a point spaced from its lower side, a pipe connection between the nozzle and the trailed tank, said pipe connecfend extinguishing fires in wing tunnels after 10 water irom the forwardly extending nozzle has extinguished fire in the main tunnel beyond the entrance to the wing tunnel.
' In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN KLEWANECH.
