citizen of the United States, and residing at Amsterdam, Montgomery County, State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Strip-Feeding Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to strip feeding mechanism which is capable of employment in various relations but which is particularly adapted for use in the machine for making partitions for boxes shown in my copending application Serial No. 369,487 filed March 29, 1920, Patent No. 1,353,344, issued September 21, 1920, of which the present application is a division.
It is the object of the invention to provide a strip feeding mechanism which will operate intermittently to feed a strip or strips of material a certain distance, and which at certain intervals will feed the strip a greater distance than at other times.
A further object of the invention is to provide a strip feedingmechanism of the kind referred to which is simple in construction and operation and which will accurately feed the material. the distance desired.
One embodiment of the invention is described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a view in elevation showing the general arrangement of a machine such as that described in my copending application above referred to and of which the present mechanism. forms a part;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view partly in elevation and partly broken away, showing certain details of the mechanism involving the present invention;
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view partly in elevation further illustrating the mechanism shown in Figure 2; and
Fig. 4 is a view in elevation of one of the ratchet wheels hereinafter described.
Referring to the drawings in detail and particularly to Figure 1, 10 represents generally the frame of a machine with which the present invention is particularly adapted for use, the mechanism constituting the present invention being shown at the upper left hand portion of said figure and being supported in suitable standards secured to the base of the machine. In the machine referred to, the mechanism of the present invention is used to feed the strips of material to a punching device which is generally illustrated in said Figure 1 by the numeral 11, but it is to be understood that such mechanism is capable of employment in other relations and other machines.
Referring more particularly to the mechanism involving the present invention, 12 represents a crank disk which is rotated from any suitable part of the machine, not shown. A crank pin 12 is mounted on the disk 12 and a. rack bar 13 engages said crank pin. This bar 13 is provided with a series of teeth 14 and is slidably engaged in a suit able guideway 15 which serves to hold the teeth of the rack bar 13 in engagement with the teeth of a gear wheel 16, this wheel 16 being rigidly secured to a hollow shaft 17 mounted upon a rod 18 secured to suitable fixed portions of the machine. The end of the hollow shaft 17 opposite the gear wheel 16 is provided with a disk 19. Mounted upon the disk 19 are. two dogs 22 and 23, said dogs being pivoted upon a suitable bolt or shaft 21- secured to said disk 19, springs 25 being provided for yieldingly engaging said dogs. It should be understood that the rack bar 13 serves to give a reciprocating motion to the gear 16, the hollow shaft 17, the disk 19, and the parts connected thereto, the purpose of which will hereinafter appear. A ratchet wheel 20 is loosely mounted upon the rod 18 adjacent the said disk 19, said ratchet wheel being provided with suitable notches in which the dog '22 is adapted to engage. This ratchet wheel is also provided with a hub portion 20 upon which a second ratchet wheel 21 is rotatably mounted, this second ratchet wheel being arranged in position to be engaged by the dog 23, and also having a hub portion 21". A gear 26 is keyed to the hub portion 20 of the ratchet wheel 20, and a gear 27 is keyed to the hub portion 21 of the ratchet wheel 21.
The gear 26 is adapted to cooperate with a gear 28 and the gear 27 with a gear 29, said gears 28 and 29 being rigidly mounted upon a shaft 30 to which is secured a teed roll 31 adjacent to which is mounted. a coopcrating feed roll 32, said teed rolls being caused to operate in unison by means ot gears 33, one of which is secured to the shaft 30 ot the feed roll 31 and the other to the shaft of the feed roll 32. Said :t'eed rolls 3i and 32 constitute the means for feeding the strips of material. Means such as set screws 35. are provided for adjusting the feed roll 32 toward and from the feed roll 31.
Referring particularly to Figures 2, 3 and a of the drawing, it will he noted that the ratchet wheel 20 is provided on its periphery with three notches 20 in which notches the dog 22 is adapted to engage. Two of these notches are arranged 'SO apart and the other intermediate the first two. It will also he noted that the ratchet wheel. 21 is pro vided on its periphery with two notches 21, 180 apart in which the dog 28 is adapted to engage. The cooperating gears 26, 28 are of the same size while the gear 27 is larger than the gear 29, the relative size of these gears being such that when the shaft 2-50 is driven thereby, it rotates twice as last as when driven by the gears 26 28. The movements of the disk 19 are SL101 as to rotate the ratchet wheels 20 or 21 (depending on which is engaged by the dogs) through an ang e oi" 90 during such movement or" the disk.
The foregoing construction produces the following cycle of operations. The parts being arranged as shown in Figure 2, with the notches 2? of ratchet wheel 21 adjacent two of the notches 2t in ratchet wheel 20 and the other notch 20 oi? the ratchet wheel 20 positioned as shown in said figure. it tollows that as the disk 19 is rotated toward the right the dogs 22 and will the notches 20 and 21. As the disk 19 is now rotated toward. the left, both ratchet wheels 20 and 21 will rotate. Since both ratchet wheels are directly geared to shaft 3O of: roller 31 and since the gears connected to ratchet wheel 21 cause said shaft 30 to rotate twice as fast as the comiected to ratchet wheel 20, the ratchet wheel 20 will rotate through an. arc of 180 while ratcl'iet wheel 21. is moved through an arc of 90. hen the dogs 2 and 2 are again moved to the right, one oi the notches 2 ratchet wheel 20 will be in position to he engaged by the dog 29 but neither of the notches 21" will he so positioned. Therefore. when the dogs again move to the left, 2 will slide over the periphery of ratchet wheel 21. while dog will cause rotation oi the shaft 30 and feed roll 31 through. the gears 26. 28. During this movement ratchet wheel 20 will rotate througl'i an arc of 90 while ratchet wheel 21 will be caused to move through an ill are ot e5 only. When the dogs 22, 23 are again moved toward the ri ht and left, another operatioiii identical with that just described takes place. But the notches on the ratchet wheels have now assumed the position which they at first occupied, so that upon the next movement ot the dogs 22 and 223', the operation first described is repeated. in short then, the notches on the r ll wheels 20 and 21 are so arranged that the feed rolls are successively given two move ments through the medium of the ratchet wheel. followed by one movement through the medium of the ratchet wheel 21, with the result that the teed roll 31 and its companion teed roll 32 are caused to rotate more rapidly or through an angle twice as great when they are rotated from the ratchet wheel 2i than when they are rotated from the ratchet wheel 20. lhis causes the strips of material to he fed a certain distance during each oi two operations tollowed by a movement twice as great during third operation.
Various mooifications in the details of the foregoing mechanism may he resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention and without sacrificing an i of the oenelits thereof and it not intended to re strict the invention to the particular details of mecluinisni herein described.
llaving thus described the invention whatis claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
l. in a strip feeding mechanism, a feed roll, two gears of dilierent diameter operatii'ely connected to said roll, and means ope ting interinittently at predetermined intcivals tor rotating each of said gears.
2. in, a strip feeding mechanism, a feed roll 7 two gears of ditlerent diameter operatively connected to said roll, means tor intermittently rotating one of said gears to rotate said roll at one speed. and means for intermittently rotating the other of said pears to rotate said roll at a difi'erent speed. 7 In a strip feeding mechanism, a feed roll, two gears of diilerent diameter operatively connected to said roll, means operating intermittently at predetermined intervals to rotate one oi said gears through a predetermined angle, and means operating intermittently at predetermined intervals to rotate the other gear through a predetermined angle. l. In a strip feeding mechanism. a feed roll, two gears secured to said roll, two other gears cooperating with said nrst named gears. and separate means operating alternately and intermittently at predetermined intervals for driving: said last named gears.
In a strip feedingincchanisii'i. a teed roll. two gears operatively connected to said roll. two other gears cooperating with said first named gears and separate ratchet mechanism operating intermittently and at predetermined intervals for driving said last named gears.
6. In a strip feeding mechanism, a feed roll, two gears operatively connected to said roll, two other gears cooperating with said first named gears, each of said last named gears having a ratchet wheel connected thereto, and means for intermittently moving said ratchet wheels.
7. In a strip feeding mechanism, a feed roll, two relatively movable ratchet wheels rotatable about a common axis, means operated by rotation of one of said ratchet wheels for driving said feed roll at one speed, means operated by rotation of the other of said ratchet wheels for driving said feed roll at a different speed, and means for intermittently rotating said ratchet wheels.
8. In a strip feeding mechanism, a feed roll, two ratchet wheels, a gear secured to each of said ratchet wheels, two gears operatively connected to said feed roll and meshing with the first named gears, and means for intermittently rotating said ratchet wheels.
9. In a strip feeding mechanism, a feed roll, two ratchet wheels, a gear secured to each of said ratchet Wheels, one of said gears being larger than the other, two gears of different size operatively connected to said feed roll, the larger and smaller of which mesh respectively with the smaller and larger of said first named gears, and means for intermittently rotating said ratchet wheels.
10. In a strip feeding mechanism, two ratchet Wheels, one of said ratchet wheels having on its periphery two notches arranged 180 apart and a third notch intermediate the first two, and the other of said ratchet wheels having two notches arranged 180 apart, a dog for each of said ratchet wheels positioned to engage the notches thereof, means for reciprocating said dogs through an arc of 00, whereby motion is given to said ratchet wheels, a feed roll, and separate gear mechanism arranged be tween each of said ratchet wheels and said roll.
11. In a strip feeding mechanism, two ratchet wheels, one of said ratchet wheels having on its periphery two notches arranged 180 apart and a third notch intermediate the first two, and the other of said ratchet wheels, having two notches arranged 180 apart, a dog for each of said ratchet wheels positioned to engage the notches thereof, means for reciprocating said dogs through an arc of 90, whereby motion is given to said ratchet wheels, a gear connected to said ratchet wheel having three notches, a larger gear connected to the other of said ratchet wheels, a feed roll, two gears of different diameter operatively connected to said roll, the larger and smaller of which mesh respectively with the smaller and larger of said first named gears.
12. In a strip feeding mechanism, two ratchet wheels, a gear secured to each of said ratchet wheels, a gear operatively connected to each of said first named gears, common means for intermittently rotating said ratchet wheels, and strip feeding mechanism operatively connected to said last named gears.
13. In a strip feeding mechanism, two ratchet wheels, one of said ratchet wheels being provided at its periphery with a plurality of projections arranged a certain distance apart, the other of said ratchet Wheels being provided adjacent its periphery with projections spaced a distance substantially one-half of the distance between the projections on said first named ratchet wheel, a dog for each of said ratchet wheels positioned to engage the notches thereof, means for reciprocating said dogs through a distance equal to the distance between the projections on said second named ratchet Wheel, whereby motion is given to said ratchet wheels, and strip feeding mechanism operatively connected to said ratchet wheels.
14. In a strip feeding mechanism, a reciprocating member, means for reciprocating said member through a certain angle, two dogs carried by said member, two ratchet wheels positioned adjacent said member and having notches adapted to be engaged by said dogs, the notches on one of said wheels being spaced differently from the notches on the other wheel, said notches being so arranged as to cause rotation of said ratchet wheels alternately and at predetermined intervals, a gear connected with each of said ratchet wheels, and strip feeding mechanism operatively connected to said gears.
15. In a strip feeding device, a feed roll, two gears of different diameter rigidly connected to said roll, two driving gears of different diameter for rotating said first named gears, the larger and smaller of said driving gears cooperating respectively with the smaller and larger of said first named gears, means operating intermittently for rotating one of said driving gears, and means opcrating intermittently for rotating the other of said driving gears.
1.6. In a strip feeding device, a feed roll, two gears of different diameter rigidly connected to said roll, two driving gears of different diameter for rotating said first named gears. the larger and smaller of said driving gears co-operating respectively with the smaller and larger of said first named gears, a ratchet wheel connected to each of said driving gears, and means for rotating said ratchet wheels intermittently at predetermined intervals.
17. In a strip feeding device, a feed roll,
two gears of different diameter rigidly connected to said roll, two driving gears of dii ferent diameter 1 01 rotating said first named gears, the larger and smaller 01" said drivinggears co-operating respectively with the smaller and larger of said first named gears, a ratchet Wheel connected to each of said driving gears and provided With a plurality of notches, a reciprocating member, a separate dog on said member for engaging each of said ratchet wheels, and means for reciprocating said member.
