Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed. March 17,-1922. -'Seria1 Nor5j58 2. i
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, Monnis Hmsrrrrnnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at borough of Brooklyn, New York, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blanks for Slippers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a blank for slippers of the type commonly termed boudoir slippers and usually made of felt. An object of the invention is to provide a blank whereby the uppers of such slippers can be cut out with almost no waste of cloth.
Another object is to so form the blank that it will retain its shape when steamed and during the process of manufacture instead of falling in at the sides as is the case with the blank at present used. The present form is so troublesome that some manufacturers have even been nailing the blank to the last.
Other objects will be evident from the following detailed description and the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a single blank.
Figure 2 is a plan view of a plurality of blanks as they are cut from a piece of cloth.
Figure 3 is a plan view of the tongue piece.
Figure a is a side elevation of the two pieces assembled, showing the first step in the manufacture of the slipper.
The blank A has the form shown in Figure 1, with curved sides 1 and a straight out base 2. from a point 4: the desired distance from the toe to the center 5 of the base or heel 2. The curve of the side is so selected that the portion from 6 to 7 is a reverse of that from 7 to 8. This is clearly shown in Figure 2 where it is seen that the point 6 on the side of each blank correspondsto the point 8 of the adjacent blank which is turned in the opposite direction. Due to this fact the blanks can be cut out of a piece of cloth as shown in Figure 2 and the only waste will. be the small portions B.
This reverse arrangement of the curves is a very important feature of my invention as it permits the saving of a large amount of material. These blanks were formerly made with the side from 7 to 8 approximately straight, and they could not be cut out as shown in Figure 2 without the waste of an unnecessary amount of material.
It is out along the median line 8- It was also the previous practice to make the cut 3 straight from the point 5 for approximately two-thirds of the distance to the point 4, and to out out an oval shaped piece extending from this point to the point 4-, which oval shaped piece of material was wasted. An advantage of my blank is that this waste also is avoided.
The blank A constitutes the whole upper of the usual felt slipper with the exception of the part 9 shown in Figure 3 which is of the form shown and is sewn in between the parts of the blank A as shown in Figure 4E. The apex 10 of the part 9 registers with the point 4 or end of the cut 3, and its sides as far as the point 11 are sewn to the sides of the material separated by the cut 3. This is clearly shown in Figure 4. The two parts of the base or heel 2 are fastened by a seam as indicated at 12 in Figure 3.
Moreover it is to be noted that the side of the slipper blank is a continuous curve, and this curve from the point 1 to the heel portion serves a useful purpose in that it provides an allowance of material which obviates the necessity of pulling it up or tacking it to the last after steaming. Notwithstanding the saving of material, that which is used is so formed that the manufacture is greatly facilitated.
This blank can be more readily and efficiently cut by means of dies than could the old form because of the straight median cut. The part 9 may be of varying shapes and sizes according to the choice of the maker, and the curve of the side of the blank A may be varied. It is only essential that approximately one half of the curve shall be a reverse of the othe half and that the blank shall have the straight median cut illustrated. It is to be understood however, that the invention is to be regarded as limited only by the scope of the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. A blank for the uppers of slippers comprising a single piece of material with a straight out heel or base, and curved sides, the curve of approximately one half of each side being a reverse of the curve of the other half, so that the sides of two blanks lying adjacent each other and pointing in opposite directions will coincide throughout almost their entire length.
2. A blank for the uppers of slippers comprising a single piece of material with a straight out heel or base, a median cut from the center of the heel to a point relatively sides, the curve of approximately one half near the toe, and curved sides, the curve of of each side being a reverse of the curve of 10 approximately o11e-half of each side being a the other half; and a tongue piece fastened reverse of the curve of the other half. with its apex at the toe end of said median 3. A slipper upper formed from a single out. piece of material having a straight out heel, In testimony whereof I have aflixed my a median cut from the center of the heel to signature. a point relatively near the toe, and curved MORRIS HIRSHFIELD.
