Description

W. H. KEMPTON.
CONDUIT PLOW. APPLICATION FILED NOV-26, 1920.
' Patented Jun 27, 1922.
WITNESSES: 5. M3284 WILLARD H. KEMPTON, OF WILKINSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC AND'MANU-FACTUBING COMPANY, A: CORPORATION OF PENN- SYLVANIA.
CONDUIT PLOW.
T 0 (LE whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLARD I-I. KEMP-- 'ION.-1 citizen of the United States, and resident of wilkinsburg. 1n the county of ll' h l tt'fl '1 l" :1 e en am on e 0 ennsy iania, iave invented av new and useful Improvement in is simple in design and highly efficient inoperation. and which will not be subgect to rapid deterioration.
Another object of my invention'is the pro-- vision of eflicient means for insulating'the various current conducting members from one another.
Heretofore, the common practice has been to employ wood in the construction of the plows. in order to furnish the necessary insulation for the current conducting members and, in order to secure the required strength, the plows had to be made quite heavy and were. consequently, somewhat cumbersome. Besides their unwieldiness, the plows were open to the further objection that they would become wet, causing them to lose their insulating property, and they would warp out of shape and were subject to rapid deterioration.
I provide a construction of molded insulating material in which the conducting strips or cables leading. from the collector shoes are imbedded and on which the shoes are carried. As the molded material has comparatively small wear resisting quality,
I provide metal wearing plates on its surface.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevational view of my device;
Fig. 2 is a View, taken at right angles to that of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a plan view, and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view, looking in the direction of the arrows IV-IV of Fig. 1.
The main body portion of the plow consists of micarta or similar insulating material. molded to the form shown, and having a shank portion 5 and a main body portion 6 in which are imbedded a pair of cur- Spccification of Letters Patent. Pgtgntgd ,}une 2? 1922 Application filed November- 26, 1920.
Serial No; 426,387;
their heads imbeddedin such body portion,
and these shoes are adapted-to engage with the usual conductor rails. A pair of metal wearing plates-13 andld are fastened to the opposite. sides ot the shank portion 5 by means ofcountersunkrivets. These plates serve to protect the molded portion 5 from damage and. from frictional wear with the sides of the slot that islocat'ed above the conduit: and: through which the plow extends.
In order to protect the collector shoes 11 and 12: and the exposed lowerends of' the conducting strips 7 and- 8 from moisture which drips through theslot above the conduit, I provide a pairof plates-15 and 16 of micarta or similar molded insulating ma terial, which have their upper and lower edges formed in the manner shown in Fig. 2. so that any water flowing down the sides of the shoe will be deflected. Their upper portions are shouldered or thickened in the manner indicated to compensate for the difference in thickness between the shank portion 5 of the plow and the body portion 6 thereof. The members 15 and 16 also form an insulating barrier between the exposed current-conducting members, at the lower end of the plow, and the wearing plates 13 and 14:.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that I provide a construction of light weight which is simple in design and has a high degree of efliciency.
Various modifications may be made in the device without departing from the spirit of the invention, as set forth in the accompanying claims.
I claim as my invention 1. A conduit plow comprising, in combination, a body portion of insulating material molded about a pair of conductors, current-collecting members secured to the body portion, wear-resisting plates secured to the surface of the plow, and a pair of insulating members secured to the surface of the plow between the collectors and the wearing plates.
2. A conduit plow comprising, in combination, a body portion of insulating material molded about a pairof conductors, current-- collecting members secured to the body portion, wear-resisting plates secured to the surface of the plow, and a pair of deflecting members secured to the surface of the plow, between the collectors and the wearing plates, and adapted to protect the currentcollecting members from dripping moisture.
3. A conduit plow comprising, in combination, a body portion of molded insulating material, a conductor member imbedded there in, and a current-collecting member.
at. A conduit plow comprising, in combination, a body portion of molded. material provided with wear-resisting members on the surface thereof, conductor membersimbedded in the body portion and means for supporting a current-collecting member.
5, A conduit plow comprising, in combination, a shank portion and an enlarged bottom portion both of molded insulating material and having current "conducting members imbedded therein, wearing plates secured to the shank portion, and a pair of current-collecting members secured to the on larged bottom portion.
6. A conduit plow comprising, in combi nation, a shank portion and an enlarged bottom portion both of molded insulating material and having current-conducting members imbedded therein, wearing plates secured to the shank portion, a pair of our-- rent-collecting members secured to the enlarged bottom portion, and insulating members secured to the enlarged bottom portion at a point intermediate the current-collecting members and the wearing plates.
7. A conduit plow comprising, in combination, a shank portion and an enlarged bot tom portion both of molded insulating material and having ourrent-conducting members imbedded therein, wearing plates secured to the shank portion, and a pair of deflecting members secured to the enlarged bottom portion at a point intermediate the currentcollecting members and the wearing plates.
8JA conduit plow of molded material, a current-conducting member imbedded therein, and a collecting member supported thereby.
.9. A conduit plow comprising, in combination, a shank portion and an enlarged bottom portion both of molded insulating material and having current-conducting members imbedded therein, wearing plates secured to the shank portion, and a pair of deflecting members secured to the shank portion at a point adjacent to the bottom portion. In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name this 12th day of November 1920. i r
