I TOY. APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 20. 1921.

Application filed September 20, 1921. Serial No. 501,910.
T 0 a? Z 1071 am it may concern:
Be it known thaal, MYRTLE BLANOHE HoUoHToN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnoinah and State of Oregon, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my present invention is the provision of a simple and inexpensive toy of the projectile type, calculated to afford considerable amusement to a child.-
To the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification Figure 1 is a side elevation of my novel toy as the same appears when secured against operation.
-Figure 2 is a longitudinal section of the same.
Figure 3 is a detail View showing the parachute member of the toy.
Figure 4 is a detail view showing the gravitating figure of the parachute member as it appears when positioned in the basket of the parachute member.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in: all of the views of the drawings.
Among other elements my novel toy coinprises a tubular body 1 having at opposite sides slots 2. The upper end ofthe said tubular body" 1 is open and is threaded as indicated by 3 for the connection of a closure cap 1. At its lower end the body 1 is provided with a handle 5, and the lower end of the said handle is threaded as indicated by 6 so that when the cap 4 is removed from the upper end of the body-1 the said cap may be secured on the handle 5 to avert loss or misplacing of the cap. It will also be noted by reference to Figure 2 that a rod 7 is arranged in the body 1, and a strong coiled spring 8 is also arranged in the body 1 and about the rod 7. At 9 is a movable handle in the body or gun-barrel 1, on which are finger pieces 10 movable in the before mentioned slots 2. The rod 7 and the spring 8 are connected to the handle 9, and the spring is also connected to a fixed annulus 10* in the body 1. Manifestly when the handle 9 is drawn downwardly against the action of the spring 8. the said spring 8 will be expanded and put under tension, also, that when the handle 9 is suddenly released,
the contraction of the spring 8 will operate to forcibly impel the handle 9 and rod 7 upwardly.
In addition. to the elements mentioned, my novel toy comprises a parachute member 11, best shown in Figure 3. The said parachute'member 11 comprises a, rod 12 with a pointed head 13 at its upper end, a spreading portion 14 preferably of light textile material, and strings 15 interposed between the outer edge of the spreadingand foldable portion 14 and the lower portion of the rod 12. Permanently connected to and arranged below the rod 12 is a basket or cage-16. The said cage 16 is made up of an upper disk 17, a lower disk 18, and spaced upright portions 19 interposed between and fixedly connecting the headsl'i' and 18 together. The heads 17 and 18 are preferably, though not necessarily, fora-ruinous in order to lessen resistance to the air, and it 'will be noticed that the rods 19 are spaced sufficiently far apart to enable the body or figure- 20 to topple out of the basket or cage subsequently to the expulsion of the parachute member 11 from the body 1. The figure 20 is preferably made in simulation of a man and of lead, iron or other heavy material, and interposed between the said figure 20 and the lowerhead 18 of the basket or cage is a string 21 of suflicient length.
hen the parts are relatively arranged as shown in Figure 1 the string 21 is arranged in the basket or cage 16 and consequently there is no liability of the string 21 becoming entangled with the parachute strings 15. hen, however, the cap 4 is removed from the body 1, and the handle 9 is retracted and suddenly released, it will be manifest that the parachute member will be shot upwardly from the body 1. After the parachute member is clear of and considerably above the body 1 the heavy figure 20 will topple out of the basket or cage 16 and gravitation of the said figure 20 will exert a strong downward pull on the basket .or cage 16 with the result'that the parachute will be opened, after which the parachute will descend gracefully to the ground. This will be calculated to aiTord great amusement to a child as will also the before described toppling of the figure 20 from the cage or basket 16.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that my novel toy is susceptible of being Specification of Letters Patent. Patgnted June 27, 1922. V
inexpensively manufactured in such manner as to withstand for an indefinite period,
the rough usage to which toys are ordinarily subjected. It will also be apparent that the parachute member maybe repeatedly dis-.
charged from the body 1 it being simply necessary for the child precedent to each' operation of the toy to place the parachute member telescopicallyin the upper portion of the body 1. a Y
I have entered into a detailed description of the construction and relative arrangement of parts embraced inthe present and preferred embodiment of my invention in order to impart a full, clear and exactunderstanding of the said embodiment. I do not desire, however, to be understood as conclaim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent,-
is r
A toy comprising a tubular and longitudinally slotted body open and threaded at one end and having at its opposite end a handle the extremity of which is threaded, a handle movable in the tubular body and vhaving finger pieces disposed in the slots thereof, a rod in the body and on said movable handle, a'coiledspring in the body and about the rod and interposed between the body and the handle, a cap removably placed- -on thetubular body, and-a parachute member telescopically arranged in the-tubular body and including a, rod, a folding and spreading portion connected to the upper portion of the rod, strings interposed between and connecting the outer edge of said portion and the lower portion of the rod, a cage or basket connected to and extending below the rod and having .upper and lower heads and also having spaced connecting portions between said heads, and a gravitationalfigure connected through the medium of a "string with the lo'werhead of the cage or basket, said figure and its string being adapted to be disposedv in the cage or basket when the parachute member is telescopically"arranged in the tubular body.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
