Be it known that I, CHARLES J. AsoIIAUnR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Decatur, in the county of Macon and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Building Construction, of which the following is a description.
My invention relates to wall constructions and particularly to a wall in which a single layer of facing bricks are employed with columns formed of pre-cast hollow units and run-in-place concrete, the latter forming also beams integral with the concrete of the columns. i
The general object of the invention is to provide a construction relieving the facing brick of all strains but the lateral stresses and to reinforce the facing by elements anchored in the run-inplace columns.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel means for holding the reinforcing elements of the columns in position and in proper relation.
More specifically the invention has for its object to promote facility in theconstruction of the wall and to embody there in the maximum strength with the minimum mass of materials.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, it being understood that the drawings are merely illustrative of one example of the invention.
Figure 1 is a vertical section of a wall formed in accordance with my invention, the section being taken between columns;
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1, the section being taken adjacent to a column;

In carrying out-my invention in accord ance with the illustrated example I provide a faclng of single layers of bricks 10, 11, the bricks of alternate layers having grooves or channels 12 longitudinally therein at the top to receive horizontal reinforce elements- 11, the alternate plain brick at the columns being of reduced size as indicated by-the character 10 in front of the L-extensions 16 of the column units 15. The column units Y (15, 15, 15 havin -been laidI produce runin-place concrete 1 17*, 17 in said units and I form at the same time integrally with the said concrete, run-in-p1ace beams 18, the continuity of the vertical series of column units being interrupted at the said beams.
The horizontal facing reinforcing elements 13 are formed with terminals 19, 19 directed laterally inward at the columns through the units 15 which for the purpose are open at the front above the L-extensions 16. Thus, the facing is anchored to the run-in-place concrete of the columns.
The run-in-place concrete of the columns is reinforced by vertical elements 20 and as illustrated in Figures 9 to 11 saidreinforcing elements are tied to the vertical series of run-in-place column units (15, 15, 15
' for which purpose I provide a reinforcing element 21 extending in said units at the several sides adjacent to the base, said reinforcing element running through the extension 16. On reinforcing elements 21 of the pre-cast units I weld or otherwise secure atthe corners of the unit within the same, clips 22, said clips extending laterally inward and presenting at two adjacent sides bendable fingers 23 which may be bent at right angles to each other to lie against adjacent sides of a vertical reinforcing element 20 and project beyond the same to be securely anchored in the run-in-place concrete 17 I would state in conclusion that while the illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment of my invention, I do not limit myself strictly to the exact details herein illustrated, since manifestly the same can be considerably varied without de )arture from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a wall construction, a single layer of facing bricks, the bricks of alternate layers having longitudinal channels in the upper surface, reinforcing elements extending in said channels, hollow column units laid one on another, concrete filling said units, said reinforcing elements having members directed laterally inward through said units and anchored in the concrete therein, concrete beams integral with the concrete in said unit, vertical reinforcing elements in the concrete of the columns, reinforcing bands in said units, clipson said bands and disposed laterally inward, and pairs of fingers on said clips, said fingers being bent against said vertical reinforcing elements.
2. In a wall construction, a plurality of facing units arranged in layers, the units of alternate layers having longitudinal channels in the upper surface, hollow column units laid one on the other, concrete filling said units, said columns being spaced from each other and in the rear of said facing units, reinforcing elements extending in said channels, said reinforcing elements projecting at their ends into the openings of said column units and anchoring in said concrete, and vertical reinforcing elements within said columns in said concrete.
3. In a wall construction, a single layer of grooved facing bricks, reinforcing elements extending horizontally in certain layers of said bricks, hollow column units laid one on another at the back of the facing bricks and concrete filling said units, said reinforcing elements having members directed laterally inward through said units and anchored in the concrete therein.
I. In a wall construction, a plurality of facing units arranged in layers, column units laid one on the other and arranged'in the rear of said facing units, concrete filling said column units, and means tying the facing units to said concrete.
5. In a wall construction, hollow column units arranged in spaced relation from each other and presenting L-extensions at the front, and facing units between and in the front of said units, said L-extensi'ons extending through the facing units to the rear thereof.
6. In a wall construction, a single layer of facing bricks, column units at spaced relation from the next adjacent bricks presenting L-extensions at the front at the bases of the units, said extensions projecting into the facing between alternate layers of the facing brick extending to the rear thereof.
7. In a wall construction, facing bricks, column units presenting L-extensions at the lower portions of said units arranged in columns spaced from each other, said lower portions of the units being closed at the front of the L-extensions, said units being open at the front above said L-extensions. said L-extensions projecting through the facing between alternate layers of certain facing bricks to the rear thereof.
8. In a wall construction, facing bricks, alternate layers of which present channels in the upper surfaces, reinforcing elements in said channels, hollow column units presenting L-extensions projecting between the al ternate layers of facing bricks, and concrete in said column units, said reinforcing elements having members extending laterally inward and anchored in said concrete.
9. In column construction, pre-cast hollow column units, vertical reinforcing elements at the interior of said units, run-inplace reinforcing elements lying in the individual units, and means extending from said reinforcing elements of the units and engaging said vertical reinforcing elements.
10. In a wall construction, pre-cast hollow column units, vertical reinforcing elements at the interior of said units, runinplace reinforcing elements lying in the individual units, and means extending from said reinforcing elements of the units and engaging said vertical reinforcing elements; together with facing brick and horizontal reinforcing elements lying in the facing formed of said brick, the last-mentioned reinforcing elements having anchoring members extending laterally into the concrete filling of the col umn units.
