Description

H. A. GORE.
Wheels for Vehicles.
N0. 142,098. Patented Augus26,1873\ UNTTED STATEs PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY A. GORE, OF GOSHEN, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WHEELS F'OR VEHICLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,098, dated August 26, 1873; applicationiled September 21, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY A. GORE, of Goshen, in the county of Elkhart and State of Indiana, have invented certain Improvements in Hubs for Vehicles. The following description, taken in connection with the ac- -companying plate of drawings hereinafter referred to, forms a full and exact specification, wherein are set forth the nature and principles ofthe invention, by which the same may be distinguished from others of a similar class, together wit-h such parts thereof as are claimed as new and are desired to be'secured by 'Let ters Patent of the United States.
My invention relates to that part of' the wheel of a vehicle in which the spokes are inserted, and through which the axle passes,
commonly known as the hub or nave; and the,
. vention are as follows: The hub consists of two metallic pieces, A and B. The piece A is provided with the annular liange a and tubular projection a which extends beyond the flan ge a., and is dressed on its exterior surface to fit accurately within the bore b of the part B, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. InWardly-projecting annular ribs are formed upon the interior surface of the part A, as at d and e, for the purpose of centering the axle-box E, between which and the partA an annular chamber is thus formed. The spokes of the wheel c are iitted together as shown in Fig. 1, and the inner ends thereof are cut in the form of a dovetail or wedge reversed, in order that they may be fitted accurately Within a corresponding annular cavity formed by the inclined faces ofthe iianges a b, and bound firm ly to the hub. The axle-box E is of the ordinary form, and is secured in position by casting lead or other soft metal in the opening between the same and the hub.
Having thus described the construction and operation of my invention, I claim and desire Vto secure by Letters Patent- Y A metallic hub, composed of the tubular parts A and B, between the iianges a and b of which the arch of dovetailed tenoned spokes is confined, and the axle-box E centered in Vthe part A and secured therein by a packing of lead cast around'it, all substantially as and for the purpose specified..
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 5th day ot' July, 1872.
Witnessesz HENRY A. GORE.
