To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, VVALTERBIRD, a citizen, of the United States, residing at Morrillton, in the county of Conway andtitate of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dasher li lechanisms for Churns, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in dasher mechanisms for churns and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved mechanism of this general character whereby the agitators and shafts comprised therein may be removed and applied with convenience and facility to facilitate the cleansing of the mechanism.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved mechanism of this general character including a clamp adapted for attachment to a churn body together with means whereby the mechanism proper issupported by said clamp whenin applied position.
An additional object of theinvention is to provide a mechanism of this general character including agitating blades arranged on a pitch whereby the milk, during a churning operation forced downwardly by said vantageous'for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

"The outer extremities of two of the arms 1' are provided with depending flanges 3 adapted to overlie the upper portion of a churn body when thefdevice is in applied position. The outerend portion of the third arm is provided with an outstanding extension 4 continued by a threaded shank 5. The extension & is angular in cross section and is freely disposedthrorigh an opening 6 produced in the upper portion of a flange 7. The upper portion of this flange 7 is also provided with an inwardly disposed wing or web 8 overlying and con tacting with the upper face of 'theadjacent arm 1. Threaded upon the shank 5 is aholdQ ing nut 9. The flange 7 is adjustable or re movable lengthwise of the extensiona so that the clamping member C maybe oper ativelyengaged with cl'iurnb'odies of differ ent sizes. The nut 9 is adapted to coact'with' the flange '7 to maintain the member C firmly in applied or working position.
The central body or plate2 adjacent the inner end of one of the arms 1 is provided in its upper face witha pocket or depression 10, and at the central portion of said de pression with an opening 11. The lower end portion of an upstanding standard or post 12 is adapted to snugly seat within the pocket or depression 10, and the said end portion is provided with an outstanding threaded shank 14 which extends through the opening 11 and engaged with the shank 14 is a clamping nut 15 coasting with the under face of the central body or plate 2 whereby the standard or post 12 is effectively anchored in working position yet can be readily removed when the occasions of prac tice may require.
The upper end portion of the standard or post 12 is provided with an extension arm 16 disposed in a direction away from the arm 1 with which is aligned the pocket or depression 10 and the upper or free end portion of said extension or arm 16 is provided with a recess or notch 17 which substantially registers with a notch or recess 18 produced in the central body or plate 2 at the junction of the remaining two arms 1. The post or standard 12 at its upper part or below the extension or arm 16, is provided with a sub-' stantially Lshaped bracket 19, the foot (0 of which being positioned beyond the outer end of the extension or arm 16. The foot a is provided with an outstanding stub shaft 20 extending in the same general direction as theextension or arm 16 and is adapted to have mounted thereon a face gear 21 of desired diameter. The gear 21 'is maintained in applied position upon the stub shaft 20 through the instrumentality of a pin 22 disposed through the stub shaft 20 outwardly of the applied gear 21 or in any other manner preferred. The gear 21 is provided with a handle 23 or the like whereby the same may be conveniently rotated.
24 denotes an elongated tubularshaft having affixed to one end portion a gear 25 which, when the shaft 24 is in applied position, is adapted to mesh with the face gear 21 from below. Fixed to the opposite or lower end portion of the shaft 24 are the diametrically opposed blades 26. the pitch of each of such blades being such that when the device is in working position and the shaft 24 is rotated, said blades will force the milk or other liquid downwardly.
Disposed through the shaft 24 is asecond shaft 27 of a length to extend beyond the opposite ends of the shaft 24. One end portion of the shaft 27 has fixed thereto a gear 28 which, when the device is assembled, meshes with the upper portion of the gear 21 so that upon rotation of the gear, the shafts 24 and 27 will be rotated in unison. but in a reverse direction. V the pitch of each of these blades also being such to force the milk or other liquid downwardly during a working operation. Each of the blades 26 and 29 is provided with a series of perforations or openings 30 where by the milk, during a churning operation is aerated.
When the device is assembled the upper portion of the shaft 24 is'received within the recess or notch 18 in the central body or I plate 2, while. the upper port-ion of the shaft 27 is received within the notch or recess 17 in the extension of arm 16 with. the gear 28 engaging said extension or arm 16 from above. hen in this position, the central portion of the blades 26 has contact with the central portion or hub 31 of the blades 29 whereby the downward movement of the shaft 24 is limited. The lower end portion of the tubular shaft 24 is provided with an internal packing 32 surrounding the shaft 27 to prevent the milk or the like from rising within the shaft 24.
The central body or plate 2 at opposite sides of the recess or notch 18 has disposed therethrough the openings 33 and insertible through said openings 33 are the pins 34 carried by the opposite end portions of a holding member The pins 34 are disposed through the openings 33 from above and one of said pins 34 is of a length greater than the other. Disposed through the lower or free end portion of the longer pin 34 is a cotter pin 36 or the like providing a stop whereby the said longer pin 34 cannot be entirely drawn through the coacting opening 33 but to an extent to disengage the shorter pin 34. When the pins 34 are disposed through the openings 33, the member 35 serves to hold the shaft 24 within the notch or recess 18.
From the foregoing it is believed to be readily understood that my improved agitating mechanism may be readily and con veniently assembled when desired and also conveniently dissembled so that the parts may be separated to facilitate the cleansing thereof. v
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a dasher mechanism for churns constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated. and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practi ce except as hereinafter claimed.

1. A mechanism of the class described comprisin a supporting member. a post mounted thereon provided with a laterally extending arm, said arm having a recess,
said member being provided with a recess, a bracket carried by the post inwardly of the arm, an operating member supported by the bracket, a tubular shaft seating within the recess of the member and in driven connection with the operating member, a shaft disposed through the tubular shaft, the upper end portion of the shaft seating within the recess of the arm, an operating member carried by said second shaft and resting upon the arm, said operating member being in driven connection with the first named operating member, said second shaft extending below the tubular shaft, and a holding member carried by the first named member and adapted to close the recess in said first named member forholding the shafts therein.
2. A mechanism of the class described.
comprising a supporting member, a post mounted thereon provided with a laterally extending arm, said arm having a recess, said member being provided with a recess, a bracket carried by the post inwardly of the arm, an operating member supported by the bracket, a tubular shaft seating within the recess of the member and in driven connection with the operating member, a shaft disposed through the tubular shaft, the upper end portion of the shaft seating within the recess of the arm, an operating member carried by said second shaft and resting upon the arm, said operating member being in driven connection with the first named operating member, said second shaft extending below the tubular shaft, a holding member carried by the first named member and adapted to close the recess in said first named member for holding the shafts therein, said holding member being provided at its opposite end portions with laterally directed pins, the first named member being provided at opposite sides of the recess therein with openings through which said pins are insertible, one of said pins being longer than the other, and means carried by the longer pin to prevent the complete withdrawal thereof through the coacting opening in the first named member.
