This invention relates to player roll for player pianos and the like.

Heretofore it has been customary to place each note piece upon its own spool. The object of this invention is to provide means whereby a single spool may be used for all player rolls on each piano.

This object is accomplished by this invention which provides a player roll comprising a note sheet mounted upon a tube which is adapted to be readily mounted upon the spool and as readily removed therefrom.

Referring now to the drawing, Fig. 1 is a broken elevation of the end of a note sheet; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a tube; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a spool; Fig. 1 and Fig. 5 are edge views of a flange and a nut respectively; Fig. 6 is an endelevation of a spool; Fig. 7 and Fig. 8 are front elevations of the flange washer and nut shown in Figs. 4 and 5 respectively; Fig. 9 is an en larged section of a note sheet, tube and spool, shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the last two being assembled; Fig. 10 is an enlarged partial as sembly of the spool element; and Fig. 11 is a partial section on the line 11 of Fig. 6.

In the embodiment shown, the tube 10 has a clip 11 secured thereto and lying flat against the outer surface of the tube. A slotted opening 12 is formed in the tube and overlies the hole 13 therein. A note sheet 14-, the width of which is substantially the same as the length of the tube 10 has a button 15 projecting from the lower side of the note sheet and adapted to engage the key hole slot 12. These are so placed that as the note sheet is wound upon the tube the ends of the tube and the edges of the note sheet will be substantially in alinement.

The tube 10 is adapted to slide over a spool consisting of a mandril 16 having a flange 17 secured on one end and a flange 18 removably held on the other end by means of a stud 19 and a knurled nut 20. A. pin 21 in the end of the mandril 16 passes through a hole 22 in the flange 18 as shown in Fig. 11,

Ail-ear 23 is formed upon the inner side of the clip 11- and passes through an opening in the tube 10 as shown in Fig. 9 and engages the longitudinal slot 24 in the mandril 16.

It will be understood from the foregoing that only a single spool is required for each player piano and that the playerroll for this piano consists of the note sheet 14: wound upon a tube 10. The width of the note sheet 141 is substantially equal to the length of the tube 10 and the mandril 16.

In playing a roll the spool is taken out of the piano andthe nut 20 and flange 18 removed. The mandril is then inserted in the tube with the ear 23 lying within the slot 24 and the flange 18 and nut'2O replaced. The spool with the roll thereon is then placed in the piano and played in the usual way.

While I have shown and described but a single embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that it is capable of many modifications. Changes, therefore, in the construction and arrangement may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as disclosed in the appended claims, in which it is my intention to claim all novelty inherent in my invention as broadly as possible in view of the prior art.

hat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In combination, a note strip, a separable fastener at the end thereof, a tube of a length equal to the width of said note strip and having a complementary separable fastener on its periphery, a mandril of a size to substantially fill said tube, said tube being adapted to readily slide endwise over said I mandril and means carried by said tube for preventing the tube from turning on said mandril.

2. In combination, a note strip, a separable fastener at the end thereof, a tube of a length equal to the width of said note strip and having a complementary separable fastener on its periphery, a mandril of a size to substantially fill said tube and be readily removable therefrom and means projecting into the interior of said tube for preventing the tube from turning on said mandril.

3. In combination, a tube, a note strip secured thereto, a mandril having a sliding Specification of Letters Patent. 5. 6. In combination, a tube, a note strip secured thereto, a mandril having a sliding fit within said tube, and a flange upon each end of the mandril, one of said flanges being readily attached to and removed therefrom, the length of the tube and mandril being substantially equal to each other and to the Width of the note strip.
