JOHN TAMKINS, SR., OF OONKLIN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN MARKET-WAGONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,058, dated August 19, 1873; application filed June 5, 1873.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN TAMKINS, Sr., of Conklin, Broome county, State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Market-Wagons, of which the following is a specication:
This invention relates to the combination land arrangement of the body and top of the wagon in such a manner that said top may be removed from the body and reapplied when required; the object of the invention being the construction of a convenient vehicle that shall prevent flies or other insects and dust from entering the nclosure, and to use the body of the wagon separately when required, the details for the accomplishment of which will be fully described in the followingspecification. t
Figure 1 in the accompanying drawings is a side elevation of a market-wagon embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same, and Fig-3 is a plan ot the body of the4 wagon with the top removed.
A is the top, the frame of which is similar in some respects to others now in ordinary use.` The base a., which connects with the upper edge of the bodyB of the wagon, is accurately jitted to it, and protected by a watertable, b, attached to the top A, whichtop has projecting arms c c. These arms have slots for keysdd, which are fitted into lugsee, attached to the wagon-body B, so that when the top A is in position it may be easily attached to the bod yB by the keys d d; and O is the wagon-seat,
which is connected with the top A. There is an extension, j', under the bottom of the seat, which accurately lits into the body or box of the wagon, and a part of the fabric used for the covering of the top extends down, and is attached to the back of the seat C, which secures the inclosure. The top A has an extension, g, over the seat, which seat may be procurtains h on the sides of the seat. The back of the wagon-top is provided with a door, D, which is transversely hinged on the upper side, and is held open by jointed braces E. This door closes upon and accurately fits the end piece F of the wagon-box, which piece is also hinged at its lower edge to the body of the wagon for the more ready removal of the contents. This end piece, when closed, is secured by springcatches fi t', extending from the upper edges of the sides of the box. The sides ot' the top A may also be hinged for opening in the same manner as the end door D. G is a folding step, which is attached to the rear end of the body B, for facilitating the arrangement and removal ofthe contents.
The arrangement for raising the door D and the sides of the top gives protection from the heat of the sun and rain, and the general arrangement greatly facilitates the delivery of the contents, while it insures protection from insects and dust when closed, as well as from rain in stormy weather. t
Having thus described my improvement, I claim as my invention- A wagon-top consisting of the cover, having front and rear drop-curtains and side drops,
the bows of one of which are slanted to su pporty the back of the seat, the side-boards having water-tables, seat-supports, and supportingarms, the swinging end-gate having a jointed support, and the partition to close the opening under the seat, the whole combined and adapted to be applied to a wagon-body having an end-gate and folding step, or to'an ordinary wagon-body, all substantially as set forth.`
