Description

R. SNOECK.
CURTAIN.
APPLICATION FILED SEPTJZI- 1 92!- Patented June 20, 1922.
Arm/mm ATENT o r ca RICHARD sNOEcK, or NEW some N. Y.
cuR'rArn.
T 0- all whom/it may concern: I
Be it known that I, RICHARD SNoE'cK, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhat- York, have invented a new and Improved Curtain, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
In connection with automotive vehicles of the non-enclosed type, such as touring cars that it has been customary for the manufacturer to provide what are known as "side curtains to prevent the entrance of rain into the tonneau of the vehicle.
These curtains to say the leasthave presented extremely unsightly appearances, and aside from this objection difliculty has been experienced in that when they werein applied position an operator was incapable of extending his hand beyond the body of the vehicle to indicate turning, stopping, eta,
as is required by law. 7 p
Also numerous accidents have occurred incident tothe use ofthese curtains in that the visibility is extremely bad through the transparent elements provided and thus it has been not unusual for any number of unavoidable collisons to occur, incident to; the. use of the same. i V
Thus it is an object of my invention to provide a curtain adapted to be arranged between the top andbody of a motor vehicle, and which shall primarily present a neatness of appearance, corresponding to that of a sedan or coupe type of motor vehicle, although the said curtain is instantly detachable when this is desired.
A further object of my invention is the construction of a device of the nature specified, by means of which an operator, although protected from the action of the elements, will be capable of extending his arm beyond the body of the vehicle for signalling purposes, or to readily observe through the body of the curtain objects beyond the vehicle.
Another object of this invention is the construction of a side curtain by means of which an occupant of a vehicle may be enabled to extend his head beyond the body of the vehicle for the purpose of observation, if this should become necessary.
Still another object of my invention is the construction of a curtain by means of which portions of curtains now forming a stand- "tion of Specification of Letters Pateiith Pat ted J ne 20, 1922 Application filed September 2,;1921, s ria No; 497,815
may be utilized, although the entire device may be constructed of new material if this is "desired' tan, county of New York, and State of New Still, a further object of my inventionis ditionto embodying the features set forth 1n the preceding paragraphs will also be extremely simple in construction and eco- 'nomlcal in manufacture.
and roadsters, it is a well appreciated fact "the provision'of a side curtain which in ad-- i Further objects o-f'this invention will,ap-'
Figure 1 is a fragmentary front view of the ferward portion of amotor vehicle, and showlng a'curtaln of my improved type interposed between the top and body thereof.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken along the line '2 2 0 f Figure 1. a
F'gure a transvers'f sectional View taken along the line 33 and in the direc- 1 the arrows also. indicated in Figure Figure 4 is a perspective view of'my improved attachment.
Figure 5' is a fragmentary perspective view showing in detail certain of the construction thereof, and 7 1 Figure 6 is an enlarged viewofa certain ipart of the device as illustrated in Figure 4.
Referring 'n'ow'more particularly to Figure 1 it will be seen that the reference numer'al 10 indicates the body of the vehicle presenting the conventional wind shield 11, and also being provided with a top 12 between which the side curtains 13 are disin applied position by suitable panels 14.
According to conventional construction, it
has been customary to provide panels of isinglass in the curtains 13, but it will be noted reference being had to Figures 1, 2 and 3 that I substitute in lieu thereof transparent panels 15, preferably of glass, these latter being mounted and slidably retained by means of a construction hereinafter more clearly specified. However it will be appre ciated that although in the embodiment illustrated my invention is shown as applied to the curtains adjacent the drivers seat, for which application it is primarily intended, that the same is equally adaptable to the curtain in any position.
With a View ofproviding a mounting for the panel 15, it will be noted primarily that an opening is formed in the curtain 13, which opening is preferably of a size slightly less than the aggregate size of these panels. As in Figures 2, 3 and 5, the edge of the curtain adjacent its opening is formed .intoa .bead by preferably coiling its edge though capable of being constructed-of any desirable material .is preferably of. rubber.
Now with a view of permittingof theassociation of the panels 15 with the frame, it
will be noted, as in Figures land 6,1-that'one of the side members2l of :the frame, is rockingly secured, as at 22, to the body of this member.- Thus it is capable-of being swung to one side so as togive accesstothe groo'ved strip 19,, obviously allowing the panels15 to be inserted into or completely withdrawn from thefframe when this becomes lnecessary, V p Thus itwill lie-appreciated that an ex- I tremely neat curtain is provided, which may. be-constructed' at a minimum fi'gure, and by means of which an operator-will be protected from the elements, it being noted 'that the objection incident to the cracking of the isinglass as has been customary in usual curtains is avoided.
Further :a-n operator isenabled to slide one of the panels 15 so as to be capable of said frame.
3. A curtain including abody of flexible extending his head or hand beyond the curtain for the purpose of observationor signalling. Y
Thus all of the objects set forth in the preamble of this specification are accomplished, and it will be understood that nu merous 'modifications of structure might readily be resorted to without in the least departing from the spirit of my invention, which I claim is:
, 1, A curtain including .a body of flexible material, a channel frame. secured tejsaid body, a grooved strip-carried :by'said frame,
.panelsmounted Within said strip, onev of the portions of said frame being capableof :being swung to one side of the body thereof,
' for permitting of-the complete withdrawal from or the insertion .of said panels into said grooved strip.
2. A curtain including a bead iof flexible material formed with a cutout portion, a
rigid channel frame having one. :of its side wallsbent to provide a trough shaped portion, a bead forming a part of said flexible body, anddisposed adjacent thecutout portion thereof, said fbeadlbeing adapted to lie :within'said trough shaped portion, a strip of grooved material disposed within-the forming a part of said frame for permitting channel of said frame, a plurality of panels mounted NVltlllIL said grooves, and means of the removal or" insertion of panels from material formed with an opening, a rigid frame adapted "to be connected to said body and adapted to lie within -said opening, a
.side member forming a partof saidf-rame and swingingly connected thereto, panels (carried by said frame.
