GET IJUNGSTROMS ANGTURBIN, OF STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN, A CORPORATION.
- .MEANS FOR EFFECTING DRAFT IN LOCOMOTIVE BOILERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 20, 1922.
Application filed November 4, 1921. Serial No. 512,929.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDRIK LJUrIG- s'rRoM, chief en ineer, a subject of the King of Sweden, reslding at Brevik, Lidingon,
Sweden, have invented certain new and useful Improvement in Means for Effecting Draft in Locomotive Boilers (for which I have filed an'application in Sweden, October 5, 1920), of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for effecting draft in locomotive boilers, particularly of the type in which waste steam 1s not dlscharged through the stack and on account thereof not used for effecting the draft.
' thus being easily accessible, and, if desired,
removable. To this purpose the turbine may be disposed on a frame adapted to be drawn out through the front side or the front door of the smoke box and preferably arranged as oil receptacle.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which-'- Fig. 1 is an axial section of a draft effecting device constructed according to the invention. Fig. 2 is a section on line AA in Fig. 1.
Referring to Fig. 1, 1 is the stack connected with the front portion 11 of'the smoke box. Fixed in said front portion is a casing 10 open to the front side of the smoke box. Disposed in the casing 10 is a frame 7 adapted to slide in guides in the casing 10 and to be drawn forwards out of the same. The frame is retained in the pushed in position by means of screw bolts 9 secured to the frame 7 and movable in slots in the casing 10, the screw bolts being provided with nuts.
Journalled in the frame 7 at the inlet of the stack 1 is a shaft 4, supporting a conventional type of turbine indicated at 3, which is preferably driven by means of steam from the locomotive boiler. The shaft 4: is hollow and contains a screw bolt 5 screwed into the boss of a fan 2. The
outer end of the bolt 5 is provided with a hexagon head by means of which the bolt may be screwed out of the fan 2 and removed.
The frame 7 is preferably constructed as oil receptacle. To the turbine shaft 4 an oil pump 8, for instance 'a toothed wheel pump, may be connected for oiling the movable members of the device.
The fan 2 is surrounded by a divided ring 6 and connected with a diffuser formed by a forwards directed bend 12 of the stack in the vertical plane, an inner tubular core 13 being disposed in said bend.
By the aid of' the above described device the parts of the same may be easily and conveniently accessible and removed. After the nuts of the bolts 9 have been loosened and the screw bolt 5 screwed out of the fan 2, the frame 7 and the parts disposed on the same may be drawn out on the front side of the smoke box, and the fan 2 may be taken out, after one or more of the lower portions of the ring 6 have been removed.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the 'United States is 1. A device for effecting draft in locomotive' boilers comprising a smoke box, a turbine, a fan propeller connected with the turbine, a conical, annular, and axially extending diffuser connected with the fan, and means permitting access'to and removal of the fan through the front side of the smoke box.
2. A device for effecting draft in locomotive boilers comprising a smoke box, a casing in said smoke box, a frame removably mounted in the casing, a turbine supported in' the casing, a fan propeller connected with the turbine, a conical, annular and axially extending diffuser connected with the fan, and means permitting access to and removal of the fan through the front side of the smoke box.
3. A device for effecting draft in locomotive boilers comprising a smoke box, a oasing in said smoke box, a frame removably mounted in the casing, a turbine supported in the casing, a fan propeller connected with the turbine, a conical, annular and axially extending diffuser connected with the fan, means permitting access to and removal of said frame being of hollow construction and adapted to contain lubricant for the lubrication of the turbine and fan.
4. A device for effecting draft in locomotive boilers comprising a smoke box, a turbine mounted in the smoke box and removable through the front side of the latter, a fan propeller, and driving means connecting the turbine with the fan propeller and detachable from the latter, whereby the fan propeller may be removed subsequent to the removal of the turbine.
5. A device for effecting draft for locomotive boilers comprising a turbine, a fan pro peller, removable means connecting the turbine with the fan, a conical, annular and axially extending diffuser connected with the fan, and means permitting access to and removal of the latter. I
6. A device for effecting draft in locomotive boilers comprising a turbine, a removable fan propeller connected with the turbine, and a divided ring surrounding the fan and permitting removal of the latter subsequent to the removal of one of the divisions of the ring.
7 A device according to claim 1, charm- I terized by the turbine having a horizontal shaft and being arranged in front of the fan with reference to the outer side of the locomotive smoke box.
8. A device according to claim 2, characterized by the turbine having a horizontal shaft and being arranged in front of the fan withreference to the outer side of the locomotive smoke box.
9; A device according to claim 3, characterized by the turbine having a horizontal shaft and being arranged in front of the fan with reference to the outer side of the locomotive smoke box.
10. A device according to claim 4, characterized b the turbine having a hollow shaft removab y receiving the driving means.
11 A device according to claim 5, characterized by the turbine having a horizontal shaft and being arranged in front of the fan with reference to the outer side of the locomotive smoke box.
12. A device according to claim 6, characterized by the turbine having a horizontal shaft and being arranged in front of the fan with reference to the outer side of the locomotive smoke box.
13. A device according to claim 1, characterized by the diffuser being formed by a 15. A device according to claim 3, characterized by the diffuser being formed by a forwardly directed bend of the locomotive smoke stack and a supplemental member forming the inner boundary of the conical diffuser arranged in said bend.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FREDRIK LJU'NGsTRoM.
