GORE-TAKING DEVICE.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTON G. CHRISTIAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Houston, in the county of Harris .and State of Texas, have'invented'certain new and useful Improvements in a Core-Taking De-' vice, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a "core taking device.
One object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described which will form a core, in the process of drilling, and embodies means for severing the core, when formed, and retaining the same in the core barrel until, it is withdrawn for inspection.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention has particular relation to certain novel features of construction, operation and arrangement of parts, an example of which is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a vertical sectional View of the device.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1, designates the drill. stem to the lower end of which a drill bit 2 is attached. This bit has a central bore 3 therethrough which continues on through the pilot core forming bit 4 which is formed integrally with, and depends from, the drill bit.
An inside pipe has its lower section 5 threaded into the upper end of the drill bit 2. The upper end of this section 5 is reduced forming the annular shoulder 6, and spaced above this shoulder there is a ring like nut 7. An annular plunger 8 works on the section 5 between said shoulder and nut and its movement is limited thereby. The plunger is seated on a coil spring 9 which surrounds the section 5 and rests upon the upper end of the drill bit.
Within the section 5 there is a removable ,core barrel 10, formed of sheet metal, and open along one side as shown in Figure 4.
The b t 2"has the semi circular recesses 11, 11 on opposite sides of the bore 3 where in the segmental jaws, '12, 12'are mounted to rotate. Actuating rods 13, 13 are adjustably secured, at their upper ends, to the plunger 8 and work throughthe bores 14:, 14: through the drill bit and their lower ends are pivoted to the outer edges of the corresponding jaws 12. These rods work through stufiing boxes '15, 15 secured in the bores 14. f
The plunger 8 has water holes 16, 16 Whichpermit the passage of water down the bit and. tire water passes on down, through the passageways 17, 17 through said bit, to the cutting points thereof, to carry away the cuttings. V
In drilling the water is forced down through the stem 1 under pressure and forces the plunger 8 downwardly against the shoulder 6. This movement of the plunger will operate, through the rods 13, to partially rotate the jaws 12 to align their straight sides with the wall of the bore 3, and permit the core formed by the bit '1, to pass without obstruction into the barrel 10.
lVhen it is desired to withdraw the core the water pressure is cut ofi? and the spring 9 will elevate the plunger, which will operate through the rods 13 to carry the jaws 12 into the position shown in Figure 1, and in engagement with the core. The plunger, in this position, abuts against the nut 7 and as the bit is withdrawn the jaws will be held against turning and releasing the core. Theoperative edges of the jaws 12 are serrated as shown, so as to securely engage with the core.
When the device is withdrawn the inside pipe may be separated and the core barrel removed and opened and the sample therein readily removed for inspection.
For convenience in manufacture a dove tailed section 18 of thebit 2 is removable.
' When removed the recesses 11 are exposed and the jaws 12 readily mounted in place and connected to the rods 13. When so assembled the section 18 is inserted in place and pinned to the bit and the jaws are thus enclosed and protected.
What I claim is 1. A core takin device including a stem, a bit secured to t e lower end thereof and formed with a bore, a yieldably mounted plunger, and core engaging dogs mounted in the bit and connected to said plunger said plunger being arranged to be actuated by Water pressure in one direction to withdraw said dogs from said bore, and yieldable means operating in the other direction, to project said dogs into the'bore.
2. A core taking device including a drill stem, a bit secured to the lower end thereof and formed with a bore, core engaging dogs mounted in the bit, a plunger, a yieldable member on which the plunger is mounted and operative connections between the plunger and dogs through which the dogs may be projected into, and withdrawn frow the bore, as the plunger is actuated.
3. A core taking device including a stem, a bit secured thereto and formed with a bore, a core barrel in the stem in alignment with said bore, dogs mounted in the bit and adapted to be projected into and withdrawn from said bore, a plunger adapted to be actuated by fluid pressure exerted through the stem, a yieldable member on which the plunger is seated, and an operative connection between the plunger and dogs through which the dogsare projected into said bore when the plunger is actuated by said yieldable member and withdrawn there-from when the plunger is actuated by said fluid pressure.
4;. A core taking device including a stem, a bit secured thereto and formed with a bore, a detachable core barrel in the stem in alignment with the bore, a dog mounted in the bit and adapted to be projected into and withdrawn from the bore a plunger adapted to be actuated in one direction by fluid pressure exerted through the stem, a yieldable member disposed to actuate the plunger in the other direction, and an operative connection between the plunger and dog.
