invention relates generally tol wheels and it isiespecially `applicable.. to .mine cars and similar. cars in which the axles are secured to the car body while lthe wheels are secured rotatably around the ends of thev` axles.h The. object of this invention isto provide a wheel which will have as little end friction as possibleand in which all the wear will be taken on the removable parts rather than on the wheel casting itself. Another object Ais to provide awheel in which there is an end cap which can be removed when necessary and which will at the same time stay tight and is not clumsy or will not project too far beyond the hub of the wheel. The invention consists inthe construction and arrangement of parts hereinatter more particularly described and. then definitely claimed.

Referring now to the details of thev drawings by numerals: l designatcs'the axle which may be supported in any desirable way, preferably 'by a pedestal box 2 which. may be of the shape shown in Figure l. washer 22 are two additionalv washers 28` and 30, the first of. which may be of com pressed bre if preferred, the washer 28 being'free to move and the washerBOrbeing of the journal is provided with an opening 32 to receive a locking pin 34 and the aforesaid non-rotatable washer 3() has its ends cut so they may be bent to embrace the ends of the pin 34 as shown in Figure 2. The entire outer end of the journal is protected by a cap l0 which is designed to re ceive the end thrust from the axle l and which may be ot any desired construction but preferably of the form shown in the drawings. As illustrated it is provided with an annular flange 36 which is adapted to lit within the three projections l2 formed on the end of the hub shown in Figure 2. The outer surface 0i the 'flange of this cap is formed on an angle as shown at la so that when it is placed in position and the screws 16 screwed home through the openings le, the angular ends of the screws will wedge against the angular portions ist of the flange of the cap 40 and thereby rmly loclr the same against the heavy washer 22 to completely seal the end of the bearing. A wire locking device or a cotter, as 46, may be used to prevent the screws 16 from vibrating loose. The cap 40 is further provided with an oil arrangement as that shown at 50 in Figure 'l which may be of the ordinary kind having a spring valve. This oiling device is so arranged that it can be oiled in any position of the wheel since it comes out radially from the hub with a right angular bend as illustrated in the drawings. In the form shown it is practically out of the way and protected by the projections against blows from objects along the track, and at the same time, if the cap et() should become loose, the oiling device would turn with the cap until it contacts with one of the projecting members 12, when the cap would be prevented from further rotation. TWhen it is desired to remove the wheel from the axle, the pin 34, if opposite one of the holes 111-, may be driven out by a driving tool (not Shown) which may go through one of the holes 14cand drive out the pin 34, the latter passing through the space between .two of the projecting members l2. It', instead of employing three projections l2, as shown, there should be an even number of projections, then the driving tool would pass through the hole lllot one projection and drive the pin 34 through the hole in the opposite projection.
-F rom the foregoing and accompanying drawing, it will be seen that l have provided awheel and bearing for the Same which is provided with a cap as 40, which is se curely held in place where it will be tight and cannot get loose and which will at the same time take a severe end thrust. it the same time a ne reservoir lfor lubricant is formed by the cap 40 as will be noted from an inspection of the drawings. any reason, the cap 40 should become loose the end pressure will be taken on the end of the pedestal box, a washer 1.8 being pro-A vided at that point to take the wear.
lt will be obvious that changes and modi- Iications may be made without departing from the spirit ot my invention, the scope of which is set 'forth by the appended claims.
,Vilhat l claim as my invention is:
l. ln a wheel, and in combination with an axle, a hub rotatable on said axle, an outer cap covering the end of the axle, and wedging means movable in a plane to which the axle is perpendicular for impinging endwise upon and locking said cap to the end of said hub.
2. ln a wheel, and in combination with an axle, a hub rotatable on said axle, an outer cap, and means penetrating the outer part of the hub radially impinging upon the outer face of the cap for locking the same on the end of the hub over the end of the axle, said cap taking the end thrust and forming a closure for the bearing and a reservoir for a lubricant.
3. ln a wheel, and in combination-with an axle, a hub rotatable with an axle and having a projection thereon, an outer cap, and a screw carried by said projection and wedging against said cap to hold the latter against the hub, the cap taking the end thrust from the axle.
l. ln a wheel, and in combination with an axle, a hub rotatable with an axle, a removable outer cap, and washers receiving lthe thrust in one direction, the'thrust in the opposite direction being borne by said cap, and means movable in a plane to which the axle is perpendicular to detachably secure the cap to the hub, said. means penetrating the outer part of the hub radially and being approximately flush with the outer face ot the hub.
5. In a wheel, and in combination with an axle, a hub rotatable with an axle, and having a plurality or" projections thereon, an outer cap, and screws carried by said projections and wedging against said cap to hold the latter against the hub.

7. ln a wheel, and in combination with an axle, a hub rotatable on said axle, and having a plurality ot projections thereon, an outer cap having an annular lla-nge with a slanting tace, and screws carried by said projections and wedging against the slanting :tace of the flange on the cap to lock the latter against the hub. l'
8. ln a wheel, the combination of a hub,

9.In a. wheel,the-combination of a hub, an axle therefor, rollers around said axle, a. heavy non-rotatable wearing washer over said axle and bearing against the end of said hub, a device as the pin 341 for holding said hub on the axle, and a wearing washer interposed between said device and the aforesaid non-rotatable washer, a cap extending over the end of the axle, and means acting radially to the axle to detachably secure the cap to the hub.
10. In a wheel, the combination of a hub, an axle therefor, rollers around said axle, a heavy non-rotatable wearing Washer over said axle and bearing against the end of said hub, and washers on opposite sides of said non-rotatable washer, a cap extending over the end of the axle, and means acting radially to the axle to detachably secure the cap to the hub.
11. In a wheel, the combination of a hub, an axle therefor, a heavy non-rotatable wearing washer over said axle and bearing against the end of said hub, a pin for holding said hub on said axle, and a non-rotatable. washer alongside of said pin to prevent wear on said pin, a cap extending over the end of the axle, and means acting radially to the axle to detachably secure the cap to the hub.
12. In a. wheel, the combination of a hub, an axle therefor, rollers around said axle, a heavy non-rotatable wearing Washer over said axle and bearing against the end of said hub, a pin for holding said hub on said axle, and two washers between said nonrotatable washer and said pin, one of which is fixed to the pin to prevent wear thereon, a cap extending over the end of the axle, and means acting radially to the axle to detachably secure the cap to the hub.
18. In a wheel, the combination of a hub, an axle, a non-rotatable wearing plate, means for preventing rotation of said plate, and a cap for covering the end of the axle, and rotatable means for impinging endwise upon the outer face of the cap to detachably secure the cap.
14. In a` wheel, the combination of a hub having a plurality of projections on the end thereof, an axle, a cap covering said axle and locked to said hub, and an oiling device projecting from said cap between the aforesaid projections whereby said oiling device is protected by said projections and said oiling device may bear against one of said projections and limit the turning of said cap when the latter becomes loosened.
15. In a wheel, the combination of a hub havinga plurality of projections on the-endthereof, an axle, afpinpassing through the axle'forlocking the-wheel on the axle,v said projections each having an'opening therein'- by which the pin may be removed from-said axle, and lacap detachably secured to the hub and covering'. the lpin andthe endof' able in a plane to which the axle is perpendicular for locking said cap to the end of said hub.
17. In a wheel, and in combination with an axle, a hub rotatable on said axle, an outer cap coveringthe end of the axle, wedging screws seated in the hub and movable in a plane to which the axle is perpendicular for locking said cap to the end of said .hub, and a locking device applied to said screws. v
18. In a wheel, and in combination with an axle, a hub rotatable on said axle, a pin extending transversely through the axle, holes in the hub in the plane of said pin and radial to the axle, so that one of said holes may be brought into alignment with said pin and then permit the passing of said pin through said hole or the passing of a tool through said hole to drive said pin endwise away from said hole, a wedging screw adapted to be seated in said hole, and an outer cap covering the endA of the axle and engaged by said wedging screw.
19. In a wheel, and in combination with an axle, a pin seated removably and transversely in said axle, a hub rotatable on said axle and extending into the plane of said pin and having openings in said plane and atopposite sides of said axle and adapted to be brought into alignment with said pin, an outer cap coverin Y wedging screws pIaced in a portion of `said openings and engaging the edge of said cap to secure the latter to the hub, said pin being removable through one of said openings when that opening and another have been, by the turning of the hub, brought into alignment with said pin.
20. In a wheel, the combination of a hub having a plurality of projections on the end thereof, an axle withinv the hub, a cap cov- 0 the end of the axle, and Y ing' said axle and locked to seid hub, and an oiling;` device threaded into said cap radially to said axle between two of said projections; on the hub, whereby said oiling device is protected by seid projections and Said oiling device may beznagziinst one of said projections and limit the turning of said cap when the latter becomes loosened, and the outer end of said oiling device being turned pai'- vallel to the axle.
