To all err/m it may concern.
Be it known that we, KARL BYE and Prrimr Wnnnn, citizens of the United States, residing at Butte in the county of Silver Bow and State oi Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Bending Devices; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved device which is especially, although not necessarily, designed tor bending rails.
The principal. object oi the invention is to generally improve upon devices of this class I by providing one oi great strength and d urability, the same being simple in construction and embodying novel details, such as for instance, a pair of feet for raising the rear end of the device oli' of the ground and properly positioning it for effective use, together with a novel double acting dog for co-operation with the ratchet nut for feeding the bending screw.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same:

Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates a. substantially bi-shaped bar or yoke, the arms 2 of which are formed at their outer ends with rail engaging jaws It is to be stated here that these jaws may be shaped as shown or shaped in any other way for effective engagement with the rail. it may also be stated that the particular shape disclosed is not controlling since the jaws may be otherwise shaped for engag ment with pipes or other similar bodies which are to be bent or straightened. as the case may be. otherwise secured to the intermediate portion of the arms 2 and is spaced from the connecting portion of the arms. In this space. a loop or reinforcing member 5 is positioned to decidedly increase the rigidity of the structure. The ends of this reinforcing loop are spaced from the arms 2 as shown to serve a purpose to be hereinafter described. The connecting portion of the yoke 1, side portions of the reinforcing loop 5, and intermediate portion of the bar 1- are formed with horizontal alined o enings and a bending, screw 6 is passed slida bly through these openings. In order to prevent the screw from rotating in the openings, it is formed with a groove 7 and a key 8 1s rigidly secured to the yoke 1 and extends into this groove as shown better in Fig. 2. The screw 6 like the arm 2 is formed at its outer end with a jaw 9 corresponding to the aforesaid jaws 3. l-rrranged on opposite sides of thescrew G and extending through the yoke, reinforcing loops and crossbar. are bolts 10 and fitted on the intermediate portion of these bolts between the side portions of the reinforcing-loop are spacing and reinforcinn sleeves 11.
F or the purpose of imparting sliding movement to the screw 6, we make use of a nut 12 which includes an intermediate large portion 13 and reduced portions 14:. The enlarged portion 13 has its periphery provided with a plurality of ratchet teeth 15 for co-operation with the double acting dogs 16 to be hereinafter more specifically described. The reduced portions 1% of the nut constitute journals for the spaced side plates 17 of an operating lever 18. the plates being formed near their ends with openings which are rotatably mounted on these journals as clearly shown in Fig. 1. While on this operating lever. it may be stated that in ad dition to including the plates 1?, it includes the spacing strips 19 which are positioned between the plates and secured thereto and serve to retain, the plates in spaced relation ship and owing to their width. provide a socket for reception of the bar 20 shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
As before indicated, the dog 16 is double acting. in its preferred form. it is halfmoon shape and includes a bearing 21.between its ends through which a pin 22 eX- tends and is held in place by means of a set screw 22 the pin being rotatable in bearing openings formed in the plates 17 and extending at one of its ends beyond one of the plates. The extended portion of the pin 22 is notched as shown in Fig. 2 and has a resilient arm 23 secured in this notch in any suitable way. This arm is equipped on its outer end with a guide pin 24: which rides in a curved slot 25 formed in one of the plates 17. It is obvious that by grasping this arm 23 and moving it, the dog will be rocked to change its position so that it will engage the ratchet nut in such a way as to rotate it in one or another direction. The slot 25 is formed near'its ends with enlargements 26 and a removable headed pin 27 is inserted in one or the other of these enlargements to hold the arm and guide pin at one end of the slot. It is obvious, as before stated, that by moving this arm, the position of the dog may be changed to cause the ratchet nut to operate in one or another direction to feed the screw 6 toward or from the rail as desired.
It is yet to be pointed out that the device includes a pair of L-shaped plates 28 which constitute feet, the same being secured to the yoke and reinforcing loop near the connection portions of the yoke to support this end of the device and raise it sufiiciently far off of the ground to insure effective en.- gagement of the jaws with the rail. It is to be noted that the vertically directed'portions are positioned between the end portions of the reinforcing loop and the inner faces of the ends of the arms 2 and are secured in place by the same bolts that serve to secure the end portions of the reinforcing loop to the yoke, thereby providing a novel arrangement.
In use, the jaws 3 and 9 are engaged with the head of the rail and a bar or the like 20 is inserted in the socket in the upper end of the operating lever 18 and the bar worked back and forth to rock the lever on its pivot.
Inso doing, the dog is engaged and disengaged with the ratchet teeth 15 and the nut is rotated in such a way as to feed the screw 6 forwardly or rearwardly according to the position of the dog so that the rail can be bowed or otherwise bent as desired.
It is to be noted that the construction and arrangement herein shown and described is strong and such that repairs can be easily made. The device is practical and extremely easy to manipulate, the levers being such that a rail can be bent by a single person.
Other advantages and features of the invention have, no doubt, become apparent from the foregoing description and drawings. In View of this, a more lengthy and detailed description is deemed unnecessary.
e claim:
1. A rail bending tool comprising a U-shaped bar having work engaging jaws at the ends of its arms, a cross-piece connected to the intermediate portions of said arms, an elongated bracing loop arranged between the cross-piece and intermediate or connecting portion of said bar, said bar, cross-piece and loop being provided with alined openings, a screw extending slidably through said alined openings in said bar, loop and cross-piece, said screw having a work engaging jaw at its outer end, bolts also passing through said bar, loop and crosspiece 011 opposite sides of said screw, spacing sleeves arranged on the intermediate portions of the bolts between the side-portions of said loop, a screw feeding nut threaded on the screw between said side portions, a hand-lever fulcrumed on said nut, and coacting means between the lever and nut for rotating the latter. 7
2. A device of the class described comprising a frame, a screw slidably mounted thereon, a ratchet nut threaded on the screw, a hand-lever fulcrumed on said nut, said lever having a curved slot therein and said slot having slightly enlarged portions near its ends, a double acting dog pivoted on the lever adjacent said slot, an arm carried by the dog, a guide pin on the outer end of the arm slid-ably received in said slot, and a separate and removable locking pin for in sertion in one of the enlarged portions of the slot for holding the guide pin and arm at either end of the slot as and for the purpose described. 7
