'To whom my concer/m n -Be it known that I, HERBERT H. lvaornen, `.a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and 4 State of New York, have invented a new and useful Pasteboard Box and Wrapper,

This invention relates to paper wrappers for pasteboard boxes of the folding type.

The object ofthe Opresent invention is to provide an improve paper wrapper especially adapted to be united with a folding lbox of the type Idescribed and claimed in an application filed October 7, 1920, Serial No. 415,413. f 1 D More specifically put, the object of this invention is to provide a paper wrapper which will-not split along the crease lines of the hinge section of said box. The provision of means to prevent this splittlng ofthe paper wrapper'along the hinge lines of the box is an important feature of this case.`

The process of uniting the present wrapperv with the box of the application referred to above is described and claimed in a Pat,- ent No. 1,363,024, dated December 21st, 1920; while the means for holding the wrapfl per and box during-theuniting thereof is covered by Patent No. 1,363,025, dated December 21, 1920.

For a complete comprehension of the present invention, an understanding of the construction of the pasteboard box to which the wrapper is united, must be had. This box includes a main receptacle or bodyportion 5 and a cover portion 6, these two portlons'being joined together by a hinge portion 7 (/rease lines 8 defining the hinge portion extend transversely of the box'. hese crease lines are formed by 'a blunt instrument, which comprees the material of the box but does not break the fibers thereof. Thus, when the cover is folded over to enclose the receptacle portion, the pasteboard does` not have any tendency to break along the crease lines but maintains substantially lts original strength at its hinges.

The bottom 5 of the box has side fla s or flanges 12 and 14 and an end flap or ange 13a. These iiaps are formed by cutting or scoring the material of the box with a knifelike implement at the time the cardboard blank is formed. These lines along which the material of the box is cut are hereafter called score lines, and are to be distinguished from the crease lines wherein the `box is not weakened b cutting. The side flaps l2 and 14 are each rovided with a tab 16, which tab is made y endable inwardly by provision of a score'line 16a. Two tabs 16 form a backing for the hinge portion 7 of the box when the .cover is moved `toward closing position, as will be understood from Fig. 2.. Thus,- when the cover is closed down over the receptacle portion it tends to remain in position due to a slight clamping action exerted by the flanges or flaps of the cover brought into frictional engagement with the correspondin ortions of the receptacle.

1th this understanding of the construction of the box proper, the manner in which the paper wrapper is constructed and the reasons for the features of its construction will be readily comprehended. This wrapper, as seen from Fig. 4, includes a main body part 17 having side flaps or flanges 19, 22 and end flaps or

20, 23. The wrapper construction so far described is not believed to contain any novelty.

The flaps of each air of adjacent flaps 19, 22 are separated by the cut-out section 25 and also by a slit21 joined with the cutout section, which slit has diverging branches 21EL and 21", whereby the three slits together form a Y. The cutout part 25 is made at right angles to the outer longi tudinal edge of each flap 19, but the cut makes an obtuse angle with the longitudinal edge of the flap 22. The cut-out portion 25, in connection with the slot 21 and one Vof its branches 21a, forms a tab 26 which is adapted to be wrapped about and united to the inner face of flange 10 of the. box cover. The side edges of this tabD 26 extend at substantially the same angle with the end edge of said tab, this end edge being reduced in width and being provided by the slit 21. The outer edge of tab 26 extends at an obtuse angle with that edge of the flange or flap 22 provided by the cut- -out portion 25. This construction, as will be seen from Fig. 2, permits the tab 26, when folded back upon flap 10, to be united directly to the box rather than to the folded end part of flap 22.

The branches y21il 21b of the slits 21 provide a triangular tab 24 on each side of the vwrapper and adjacent the tabs 26.

are adapted to be folded in upon the inside face of the hinge portion 7 of the box. The branch slit 2lb, in Aconjunction with the slit 21, permits each fia 19 to be folded over the corresponding anges 12 or 14 of the box, the slit 21b extending at the same angle relative to the slit 21 that the inside edge 16b of tab 16 makes with theV bottom 5 of the box.4 Thus, the paper wrapper fits the tabs 16 and completely covers the same on the outside. The provision of the slots 21a and'21b has another purpose, namely, it allows theV paper of the wrapper to stretch after the wrapper has been united to the box and after the box cover is folded over `upon the receptacle portion. It will be understood from a showing of Figs. l

and 2 that this closing of the cover of the i box after wrapping will stretch the paper over the hinge section 7. This stretching, if carried too far, will cause breakin of the paper wrapper along the crease ines 8, thus ruining the appearance of the box and making it an unsalable article. The peculiar out of these slits, allowing the paper to stretch between the desired points, is an important feature of the present invention.

and 18a have a sufliciently greater width,

than the Width of corresponding flanges of the box' so that they may be pasted not only to completely coverthe outside of the box, but extend down inside the box, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The wrapper blank is so designed, however, that no part of the paper wrapper is joined to itself,-but instead, all' parts are united directly to the box as a foundation. The paper wrapper may have a slight taper from end to end to allow for the corresponding taper of the box, which has been described.

What is claimed is 1. A wrapper2 for one-piece boxes of the type embodying a body portion, a cover portion and a hinge portion, the body. and coverv portions having side and end flanges with the cover portion foldable over the body portion, and the side flanges of the body portion each provided with an inwardly bent tab forming a backing for the hinge portion of the body, said wrapper being formed of a single sheet of paper cut to provide side flaps and end flaps to cover the body portion,

2. A wrapper for pasteboard boxes of the folding one-piece type comprising a single sheet of paper, said sheet having aout-,out

section intermediate its ends and extending inwardly toward thecenter of the sheet from two opposite sides thereof, and a slit joining each cut-out section and extending farther into the sheet, said slit having a pair of diverging branches whereby in conjunction with the adjacent cut-out section two independent tabs are formed at one side, one for the side flanges of the cover of the box gud theother for the hinge portion of the 3. A wrapper for pasteboard boxes ofI they folding type comprising a single sheet of paper, said sheet having a cut-out section intermediate its ends and extending inwardly toward the center of the sheet from two opposite sides thereof, a slit joining said cut-out section and forming a continuation of one of the walls of the cut-out section and extending farther into the sheet, said slit having a pair of branches of equal length whereby the slit with its two branches forms a Y so that each cut-out section in conjunction with the slits provides two independent tabs.

4. An article of manufacture comprising a folding one-piece pasteboard box, and a paper wrapper' for covering the exposed portions of said box; said box including a receptacle portion, a cover portion, andV a hinge portion intermediate the other two portions and integral therewith; said' wrapper having slits therein at opposite points on its longitudinal edges, the slits each having diverging branches, the spread between said branches amounting to approximately the Width of the hinge portion of the box, said slits permitting stretching of the wrapper after the uniting of the same to the box and during the folding of the box.`

5. An article of manufacture vcomprising a folding one-piece pasteboard box, and a paper wrapper for covering the exposed portions of said box; said box including a receptacle portion, a cover portion, and a hinge portion intermediate the other two portions and integral therewith, said hinge portion being defined by crease lines, said crease lines being parallel to each other and being formed by a blunt instrument whereby the` fibers of the pasteboard are not cut; said proximately the Width of the hinge portion of the box, said slits permitting stretching of the wrapper after the uniting of the same to the box and during the folding of the box.

6. An article of manufacture comprising a folding one-piece pasteboard box, and a paper Wrapper for covering the exposed portions of said box; said box including a receptacle portion, a cover portion, and a hinge portion intermediate the other two portions and joined thereto, the cover portion and the receptacle portion both having integral flanges on three sides and said receptacle portion having inwardly bent tabs at the ends of the side flanges thereof, said tabs engaging the hinge portion of the box at each end; said Wrapper having flaps or fianges corresponding to the flanges of the box but of greater Width whereby each fiange of the wrapper may cover the outside Wall of each corresponding flange of the box as well as the said inwardly bent tabs and may also be united to the inner Wallof the corresponding flange; said Wrapper having a pair of tabs at opposite points, one of the tabs of each pair being united to the inner Wallof the hinge portion, the other tab of each'pair being united to the inner wall of the side fianges of the top portion.
