Be it lmown that I, GEORGE HENRY WHEARY, a citizen o-f the United States, and resident of Racine, in the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Locking Means for Trunk Drawers, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.

This invention relates to improvements 1n locking means for trunk drawers.

Wardrobe trunks of the better class are usually divided vertically into two parts to form a wardrobe section and a drawer section. The two parts are hinged together toswing horizontally to open or closed position, and one section is provided with garment hangers for suspending outer wearing apparel thereon, and the other section is provided with drawers for holding other articles of wear. In orderk to guard against the drawers moving inwardly and outwardly during transportation to the damage or injury of the drawers a locking mechanism is desirable and necessary. v

It is one of the objects of this invention to provide a simple and convenient form of lock which is adapted to lock all of the drawers in closed position.

A further obj ect of the invention is to provide a locking means for trunk drawers which is formed in two sections to permit the easy handling of the parts.

A further object of the invention is to provide a locking means for trunk drawers in which all of the drawers of the drawer section may be locked by a single lock, and also tie and reinforce the vertical .walls of the drawer section.

A further object of the invention is to provide a locking means for trunk drawers which is of simple construction, is strong and durable and is well adapted for the purpose described.

lWith the above and other objects inv view, the invention consists of the improved locking means for trunk drawers and its parts and combinations'as set forth in the claims, and all equivalents thereof.

Referring tothe drawing, the numeral 8 indicates the drawer section of a wardrobe trunk provided with la plurality of drawers 9 slidably supported upon Cngled rails 10 mounted within the trunk section. The drawersare pro-vided with suitable pull handles 11 for convenience in opening the drawers. Side portions of the drawer section are reinforced and connected together by transverse bars 12 and to the lower sides of these bars are mounted outwardly extending slotted arms 13. The slots 14 are of elongated form transversely of the arms and the entrance openings 14 to said slots are of less length than ythe slots 14.

Secured to and projecting outwardly from the bottom portion of the drawer section is another arm 15 which is provided with an elongated opening or eye 16 extending vertically therethrough for receiving the lower reduced end portion 17 of a lower part drawer locking bar 18 which is adapted to be positioned in frontv of some of the drawers. In order to engage the slotted arms 13 medialvopposite edge parts of the bar are cut away to form locking portions 19 of less width than the other portion to permit the bar to be easily entered into the elongated slots of the arms when the bar is raised above its normal position of rest as shown in Fig. 1. Then inserted and lowered the opposite side edge 1portions of the locking bar will be locked by the shoulders 2O formed by the elongated slots 14 and the openings 14 of less width. A pin 21 projecting outwardly from the lower end portion of the bar 18 rests upon the arm 15 and limits the downward movement of the bar.

The upper end portion of the bar 18 is bent inwardly and downwardly at right angles provided with a top bolt opening 23 and aside pin opening for receiving respectively, a spring bolt 25 and a holding pinA 26 which are carried by the upper part loclring bar memberI 18. Said upper bar part 18 is formed'with an upper end inwardly and downwardly extending hoolp'ortion 27 which hooks over an eyed arm 28 mounted in the fupper portion ot the drawer section and projecting outwardly therefrom. Said arm is of tubularrconstruction to permit the bar part .18 to be pushed inwardly into said tubular portion vwhen unlocked and swung upwardly. Thellower end portion ot' the upper partbar overlaps the upper end portion ot the lower part bar and the holding pin 26 rigidly connected to said `upper part extends into the side pin opening 24 ot the ylower part bar. The spring bolt 25 forms part ot thelock 29 mounted onthe inner face ofthe upper part bar member 18 and is formed with .an inner beveled yface 25" so it will automatically snap into the-opening 23 `ofthe locking part 22 when the upper bar is yhooked to the eyed arm 28 vand swung -inwardlyto closed position.

rEhe upper drawer adjacent the loclr is provided with a recessed portion SOhaving a front shoulder 30 to accommodate the loclr and the locking part 22 of the lower bar Ypart and prevent said Ilock from swinging outwardly. The lock 29 is controlled by a key 31 in the ordinary manner.

In use the two part locking bar extending in front of. the medial portions ot the drawers and connected to the trunk section at its opposite ends and intermediate oit its ends securely locks the drawers in closed position,

and when it is desired to gain access to the drawers it is only necessary to unlock the' bolt, swing the upper part bar outwardly and then raise slightly to disengagev it from the eyed arm to permit its removal.' The lower part bar -may then be removed by vraising vertically to register its narrow portions with the slotted arms and swing outw'ardly. 1n locking the reverse operation takes place with the exception that it is not 'necessary to' use the lzey as the bolt will snap to closedgposition. Y

From the 'foregoing description it will be seen that the locking means for trunk drawers is of very-'simple construction, and is well adaptedfor the purpose described.

What 1 claim as my invention is:

1. The combination with a trunk Vsection having drawers,fof a means for locking said drawers iny closed position, comprising arms .projecting romupper and lower and interlmediate portions oi" the trunk section, a locking member formed of two independent parts removably engaging all of said-arms, the jadj acent ends of said two ypart locking member removably overlapping each other, and

7. he combination with a trunk section having drawers, of a. means for locking said drawers in closed position, comprising eyed arms projecting from the upper and lower portions of the trunk section, the upper of said arms being of tubular form, a slotted arm projecting from the medial portion of the trunk section, a locking bar i'ormed of two independent parts engaging the eyed arms and the slotted arm and having its adjacent ends overlapped and removably pinned together, and means locking the overlapping portions together and to one of the trunk drawers, the upper bar part when unlocked being slidable into the upper tubular arm.
