citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hubs, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to an improved fan construction as particularly applied to fansused in connection with motor vehicles.
It is an object of the invention to provide a fan which is of extremely simple construction, which may be cheaply manufac tured, and which is distinguished by its high degree of efficiency.
A further object embraces the provision of a fan which may be easily detached and quickly placed in operative position.
Another object aims at the integral construction of a pulley driving the fan and the holder for the fan.
A further object includes the provision of a sleeve loosely mounted on a supporting shaft and constituting a carrier for the pulley holder and fan blades.
A subsidiary object constitutes the provision of flat faces on the sleeve against which depressions of the holder bear to prevent relative movement between said holder and sleeve.
Another object is predicated on the construction of the integral holder and pulley in halves equipped with flanges whereby the halves are secured together.
It is also an object of the invention to properly secure the pulley portion of the holder to the sleeve.
lVith these and other objects in view which will hereinafter appear, the invention comprises the means set forth in the specification, and particularly pointed out in the claims forming a part thereof.
The annexed drawing discloses a preferred embodiment of the invention, which, however, constitutes but one of the various ways in which the principle of the invention may be utilized.

Referring to the various figures of the drawing, 1 designates a supporting shaft arranged normally in horizontal position, but which for convenience of illustration is shown vertical in the drawing. The supporting shaft 1 at spaced portions is provided with set collars 2 and 3, constituting abutments for the fan construction, which is arranged on the bearing shaft 1. The fan proper comprises a pair of blades 4 and 5, arranged in diametrical opposition to one another and merging into a central portion which is preferably, although not necessarily, integral with the-blades. The central portion is formed with a spherical hub portion 6 having at the bottom a concentric flat ring portion 7, which is provided with a plurality of spaced key holes or elongated apertures 8, whereby the fan blades may be conveniently and rapidly placed in operative position or detached from the appurtenant and associated parts.
The fan blade structure is secured to a hub or holder 9, which is indicated in Figs. 35, and is made in halves, which are secured together, whereby the holder may be conveniently placed in position or removed. Each holder section comprises a frustoconical portion 10 and at the narrow end passes into a cylindrical portion 11, which then passes into the pulley portion 12. The
sections of the holder are each provided with ribs 13 and 14 having apertures whereby the halves of the holder may be secured to constitute a complete circular holder and'pulley surrounding the supporting shaft 1'. The supporting shaft 1 is equipped betweenthe collars 2 and 3 with a carrier sleeve 15 which is rotatably mounted on the supporting shaft 1 but prevented from longitudinal movement by the presence of the set collars.
In order to prevent relative movement of the holder and sleeve the latter has flat faces 16 at diametrically opposite portions, which faces are engaged by depressions 17 stamped in the cylindrical portion 11 of the holder. This engagement between the depressions and the flat faces of the sleeve not only prevents relative movement of the parts, but in addition the holder and the fan blades secured thereto are centered with respect to the supporting shaft. In order to provide the necessary centering of the pulley at the inner end of the holder, a washer 18 is provided within the inner end of the pulley and bearing against the inturned flange 19 of the pulley structure. The washer is locked against longitudinal movement on its sleeve in the other direction by tongue 20, stamped out from the pulley wall and folded onto the adjacent side of the washer. Screw 21 is threaded into the washer and extent s through the tongue 20 so as to connect the parts. The fan structure is arranged on a flange 22 of the holder and screws 23 extend through the key holes 8 of the fan structure and through registering apertures 24- of the horizontal flange 22 of the holder. When the fan structure is to be detached from the holder it is merely necessary to loosen the screws 23 and to shift the fan blades slightly in order to bring the larger portion of the key holes 8 in registry with the screw heads, whereupon the fan blades may be'lifted off.
From the foregoing it is obvious that the fan structure and the holder can be manufactured by stamping operations so that the improvement can be produced in large quantities at considerable saving. The parts enable convenient assembly and dismantling and in assembled relation possess that degree of safty in operation and that efficiency which is necessary for devices of this character.
The drawing discloses a preferred enbodiment of the invention which is merely indicative of the principles on which the invention is predicated. Various changes and alterations may be made and I wish to avail myself of all modifications constituting departures within the scope of the inven tion as set out in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a fan structure, in combination with a shaft, a sleeve loosely mounted thereon and having flat faces, a holder surrounding said sleeve and bearing with depressions against said flat faces, and fan blades detachably secured to said holder.
2. In a fan structure, in combination with a shaft, a sleeve loosely mounted thereon, a holder keyed to said sleeve, said holder comprising halves folded together, and fan blades secured to said holder.
3. In a fan structure, in combination with a shaft, a sleeve loosely mounted thereon, a holder keyed to said sleeve, and fan blades detachably secured to said holder.
l. In a fan structure, in combination with a shaft, a sleeve loosely mounted thereon, a holder keyed to said sleeve, and fan blades secured to said holder by a bayonet joint.
5. In a fan structure, in combination with a shaft, a sleeve loosely mounted thereon, a holder keyed to said sleeve and having a fan blade supporting flange, a plurality of fan blades provided at the central portion with elongated apertures and adapted to be secured to said holder flange.
6. In a fan structure, in combination with a shaft, a sleeve loosely mounted thereon, a sheet metal hub keyed to said sleeve, and fan blades detachably secured to said hub.
7. In a fan structure, in combination with a shaft, a sleeve loosely mounted thereon, a hub keyed to said sleeve, a pulley formed integral with said hub, and fan blades detachably secured to said hub.
8. Ina fan structure, in combination with a shaft, a sleeve loosely mounted thereon, a holder for the fan blades surrounding said sleeve, said holder comprising two sheet metal parts united to form a substantially cylindrical structure, said structure including a pulley, a neck and a fan blade supporting flange, means for preventing relative rotation between said sleeve and holder, and means for centering said holder with respect to said sleeve.
9. A holder for fan blades consisting of two sheet metal parts united to form a substantially cylindrical structure, said structure including a pulley, a neck and a fan blade support-ing flange.
10. A holder for fan blades, comprising two sheet metal parts united to form a substantially cylindrical structure, said structure including a pulley, a neck, and a fan blade supporting flange, and means for maintaining said cylindrical structure in centered relation.
