Description

D is the clamping-screw.
UNITED STATES ATEN'I. Orro.
PHILIP A. SGHOELLHORN, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN CRIMPING-CLAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,956, dated August 19, 1873; application filed May 13, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIP A. SonoELL- HORN, of the city of Bufialo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented an Improved Crimping-Scroll, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to the construction of scrolls for crimping theuppers of boots and shoes and it consists in casting the clampingtongue with a projection or arm, extending at right angles to the face of the tongue, and in a direction from the opposite face thereof. These arms extend through holes cast in the scroll. The ends extend outside of the scroll, and are so arranged that the leather can be released by turning the clamping' screw and pressing with the thumb and finger against the ends of the arms on the tongues, forcing them together.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure I is a side elevation of my improved crimping-scroll complete. Fig. 11 is a section on line X, Fig. I. Fig. III is a face view of one of the crimping-tongues.
Like letters of reference designate like parts in each of the figures.
A is the crimpingscroll, of which a a are the clampingj aws. B B are the clampingtongues. O is the clamping block or wedge. The inner faces of the jaws to a have a series of parallelstraight corrugations, a. a. A corresponding series of corrugations, c c, is also cast on the tongue B. At the points of the tongue and jaw one or more corrugations are omitted on each, and instead thereof a roughened or granulated surface, I) b, is formed, by which a small projection of leather may he clamped. Each of the tongues B has also a projection or arm, E, cast, and extending out from the corrugated face of the tongue. These arms pass through holes F in the clampingjaws a of the scroll, in which they act as a guide to the tongue. Their ends also extend outside of the jaws, so that after the release of the screw the leather is readily released by pressing upon the ends of the arms E, by which they are forced from the jaws to, and release the leather. The corrugations a a and c c are made smooth and rounded, so as to prevent any possible injury to the leather.
I claim- The combination of the screw D, block or wedge O, tongues B B having lateral arms or projections E E, and the jaws a at having holes F F, substantially as shown and described.
P. A. SOHOELLHORN.
