Be it known that I, ARTHUR Barns, asubject of the King of England, residing at Leicester, Leicestershire, England, have invented certain improvements in Upper- Shaping Machines, oliwhich the following' description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like reference characters on the drawings'indieating like parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to machines for use in the manufacture of boots and shoes for shaping the upper-.materialsover a last or other shoe torni, and is herein illustrated in its application 'to a well-known type ot pulling-over machine, the machine herein shown including means for pulling over the upper and means for wiping the toe end portion oi the upper into lasted relation to a sole or insole,pherein frequently termed ttor convenience the sole. It is to be understood, however,y that in various novel aspects the inventionis not limited to a machine oil-the particular type illustrated nor to a machine including both pulling over means and lasting means. lt will also be recognized that in soine'oii its novel aspects the invention is not conlined, in respect to the shaping ot' the upper materials over a torni, to what is lgenerally understood as lasting in the restricted sense. l
In the shaping of the toe end portion of welt shoe upper materials in the character'- istic contour to lie inwardly over the feather of the sole and to contorni to the angle between the 'feather and the rib of the sole, particular difficulties are encountered in gathering and wiping the materials inwardly over the bottom ot the form in such manner as to avoid the presence oli ,vriiikles in portions ot. the upper which are visible in the linished shoe, due to the gatl'irying 'of the marginal portion ol. the upper within a contracted area inwardly from the ed 'e of the torni. The present invention pro vides, as an important feature, novel means for working thev margin oit the upper of welt or other type oix shoe inwardly overfthe bottoni o a torni under suchl control as to shape the upper'sinoothly and tree troni wrinkles along the edge oi the torni. For the purposes in view, the construction shown coinprises a. flexible loop wiper and means for operating it to gather the upper :materials about the toe and to wipe them inwardly over the bottom oiii the form, together with means ifor controlling the margin of the upper in such manner as to hold it smooth and free from wrinkles and to render Athe wiper el'liective to draw and wipe the upper inwardly with the required pressure. In the illustrative machine the control ofthe inargin ot the upper is effected by clamping means which permits the upper to slip in response to the pull of the flexible vwiper in order to equalize the tension under which theuppcr is shaped at the ditlerent points about the toe, a portion of the clamping means being also movable inwardly over the bottom oit the :torni to assist in the over-wiping operation and in maintaining the iiexible wiper close to the plane of the shoe bottom. y A further feature of the invention consists in a novel organization ot upper pulling means and means ttor working the margin of the upper inwardly about or over a liorm, the construction shown comprising marginal clamping means as hereinabove set forth which is operative by relative movement between Vitl and the form to pull the upper over the Yform under suclrcontrol as to permit the margin to slip inresponse to excessive tension in the upper pulling operation as well as in the subsequent overwiping operation of th liexible wiper. Included also in the organization herein shown are/*side grippers which in addition to pulling the upper over the top of the iorm have an overdrawiing movement to carry the margin inwardly over thebottoin of the torni in time relation to other operations ofthe niachine. An important teature is also to be recognized in a novel organization including means tor controlling the pressure on the lclamped margin of an upper in such manner as to reduce the pressure for the operation of working the upper inwardly about yor over the torni.k ln the construction shown, wherein the margin oi ythe upper is permitted to 1 p in response to excess ol tension in both the.l upper pulling operation and the overworkingv operation. the clamping means is so controlled es to relax the clamping pressure automatically after the upper pullingoperation'to permit the upper to slip more freely as itis wiped inwardly over the hottoin oi.' the Yform while still under effective control oi the clamping means reissue 8 slidek operated positively from a track cam on the cam shaft. Through these connections the clamping` member 25 is raised and lowered.. rlhe downward or upper clamping movement is rendered yielding by a spring llthat encircles the rod 241 between a shoulder on the upper end of the rod and a washer engaging the member 23 and is compressed to a substantial extent by the cam motion as the rod slides downwardly through the member 23. -`rlhis arrangement has two purposes. lt accommodates lvarying thicknesses of upper materials automatically and it provides for a partial relief ot the clamping pressure to allow the upper to be drawn out ot the clamp under tension.

When power is applied to the cam shaft-'the clamping member 25 is depressedto clamp the toe of the upper yieldingly under the compression of spring 4115, and the side grippers are closed and then updrawn, while at the same time the sole rest is rocked by its cani 4 to :torce the last downwardly and thereby to stretch the upper between. the last on the one hand and the grip `)ers and clamp on the other hand, and then the machine comes to rest. This organisation introduces the new 'feature in a machine ot the illustrated type that the toe oit' the upper is clamped on a continuous linel all the way around the toe and then the last is depressed into the upper and when the high peints o'l the toe ot the last produce excessive tension on the upper at certain places the clamp allows the upper `to slip to gire up stock at those places. The result is that the top ci the toe ot' the last is covered with upper stoel; that is under uniform strong tension at all points. he upper is not 'tcnsioned materially more over the high points which give the character to the style ot the toe than it is tensioned over the low places. 'This y produces a toe that stands up in its miginal brought into position to hold the shoe, and
the slide 124i is retracted to allow the springs 7X to press the side grippers inwardly. lt is during this stage of the machines operation that the toe lasting mechanism is operated.
For the toe lasting` operation it is important that the toe end of the last occupy approximately a predetermined altitude yin relation 'lo the plane ol' the clan'iping` plate 16 and, in order to adapt the mechanism to the varying` longitudinal curvature or inclinan tion ol the tread faces of dillerent lasts, this result is obtained by a toe presser which is a rod haring an adjustable loot and mounted lor movement in the bracket 15 to engao'e the tread 'face oit the toe and depress the iorepart oi the last. rlhe rod is connected at its upper end with the short rear arm oli the angle lever BO. The automatic lasting means comprises a tleible wire lasting loop whichis a per inanent part el the machine and is adapted 'te be placed around' the toe oit the shoe immediately below the plate 1S after the shoe has been pulled and beliore the machine restarted r the second part oit its cycle.

'lhe loop extends backwardly along each side of the machine over guide rolls 62, Figs. l and 3, and has its ends 'fastened to brackets 64 on a slide 222 which has a cani roll 65 and is reciprocated by a cam Q25 on the cam' shaft, this being the same cam and slide that close the side clamps. By this construction and organization the automatic lasting means 60 is operated to draw and wipe the upper into lasted relation to the innersole around the toe, the lasting means accommodating itseli amzomatieally to the shape ot the toe, and being guided in the proper wiping plane relatively to the shoe by the plate 16. The pull ot the lasting loop 60 on the upper causes the clamp to give up etocl under tension :for drawing over the last bottom, and the pull ot the loop also assists in advancing the clamping plate over the shoe bottom to the position shown in Fig. l, such advancing movement being further assisted by the treadle spring which is suiiicient of itself to effect more or less inward movement of the plate when the clamping pressure is relieved.
The machine comes to rest the second time with the parts in the position shown in l, the upper having` been worked into lasted position at the toe but not fastened. For fastening the upper the side tack carriers 10 are provided with binding cord holders, Figs. 4, 5, 6 and 7, comprising a slide 70 which has a bearing in the carrier l0 and is operated by two springs 72 to clamp and hold the cord a against the end ot the lower plate or wiper member Yi ot the tach carrier and in position under the driver holes 75 so that the tacks will pass through the cord when they are driven. The :tree end ot' the cord is held in a tapered recess formed in the edge of a rigid bar 76 and the other end is held in a similar recess in a second bar 77, the bars being connected with springs 78 to put tension on the cord. The operator applies the cord snugly by hooking one end in the bar 7G and drawing it through the adjacent holder and snugly around the toe under the lasting loop and then places it in the second holder and secures its other end in bar TT with the spring '76 under tension. liVhen the machine is restarted Alor the third and iinal part ot its cycle the `taclers complete their movement over the shoe and insert the tacks. The tacliers each have a component or rearward movement in advancing to tack inserting position and this tightens the cord just before it is tacked. Alfter the tacks are driven the machine is opened and the shoe freed with the upper pulled over and the toe lasted and bound in lasted relation to the innersole.

Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is l. n, pulling-over machine having, in combination, a sole rest, a guide, a plate movable in the guide toward and from the sole rest and having its inner end recessed to embrace the toe of a shoe presented to the sole rest and permit the toe ot' the shoe upper to be spread over it, a clamping member movable in the guide substantially perpendlcularly to the plate to clamp the upper, and yielding means to operate said member to clamp the toe ot the upper on a substantially continuous line extending around the toe.
2. A pulling-over machine having, in combination, a sole rest, a clamping plate movable toward and from the rest and recessed to embrace the toe oi a shoe, a clamping member to hold the toe of the upper fric-- tionally on the plate, and means for operating the sole rest to move the last relatively to said plate to effect pulling of the upper over the toe of the last and to operate the clamping member to hold the upper until a predetermined tension is exceeded at any point and then to give up stock at such point or points while holding elsewhere.
3. A pulling-over machine having, in combination, a sole rest, a toe clamp comprising a plate substantially parallel with `the sole rest and recessed to embrace the toe of a shoe, a clamping member shaped similarly to the plate at its inner edge, means for yieldingly operating the clamping member to seize and rictionally hold the upper on a substantially continuous line around the toe ot the last, means for operating the sole rest to pull the upper and locate the last with relation to the plane of the clamping plate, and means Afor advancing the clamping plate to lay the upper over the toe of the last.
In a pulling-over machine, the combination with side grippers, ot' an upper clamping i plate, a co-operating clamping member, a toe presser, a pivotally suspended `angle lever operatively connected with said member and. presser, and means for bodily moving the angle lever to apply pressure'to vsaid member to clamp the toe of the upper against said plate and to move the presser to torce the last away from the grippers and said plate.
5. ln a pulling-over machine, an upper clamping plate, a co-.operating clamping member, a toe presser, a single operating member connected with the presser and yieldingly connected with the clamping memloer, and additional means for relieving the clamping pressure without correspondingly affecting the presser. 6. ln a pulling-over machine, an upper clamping plate, a (io-operating clamping member, a toe presser, a single operating member connected with the presser and have ing a toggle connection with the clamping member, and additional means for operating the toggle to change the holding effect oit the clamping member while the presser remains substantially at rest.
T. i pulling-over machine having, in combination, side grippers, means for holding them normally outspre'ad tor the pulling operation and permitting them to move inivardly for overdrawing the upper, toe clamping means for the upper, and connections for automatically reducing' the toe clamping pressure when the grippers are allowed to move inwardly for overdrawing.
8. A pulling-over machine having, in combination, upper holding means comprising a toe embracing plate arranged to extend lateally ot the toe from side to side, means to clamp the upper on the top tace of the plate, means to etlect relative movement between the last and said plate to pull the upper, and means to slide said plate lengthwise of the shoe relatively to said clamping means to draw the upper from under the clamping means and Wipe it over the toe of the last.
9. A pulling-over machine having, in com bination, a sole rest, a plate arranged to extend laterally of a shoe :trom side to side having a recessed inner edge adapted to constitute a toe end abutment, means to clamp the upper outspread over the plate, means to operate the sole rest to force the last into the upper While said plate and clamp remain substantially stationary, means to operate the plate to carry the upper over the toe of tno last, and means for holding said clamp-y 'ing` moans from moving lengthwise of the last as the upper is carried inwardly over the toe. i
10. .A pulling-eter machine having, in combination, a sole rest, a plate having` a recessed inner edge adapted to constitute a, toe end abutment, connected power operated means to clamp an upper on the plate and to move the last to stretch the upper, means to advance the plate to carry the upper over tlietoe of the last, and means for holding the clamping means vtrom advancing with the plate.

13. A pulling-over machine having, in combination, a toe embracing plate, means to clamp an upper on said plate, means for relatively moving the last and said plate and clamping means to tension the upper, a flexible loop Wiper to embrace the toe adjacent to the plate, means to move the plate over the toe, and means to draw the loop wiper between the plate and the last bottom to Wipe the upper against the lip of a Welt shoe innersole.
14. A pulling-over machine having, in combination, a sole rest, a plate having a recessed inner edge adapted to constitute a toe end abutment, means to clamp an upperI outspread over the plate. means to operate the sole rest to Ytorce the last into the upper, a flexible loop Wiper adapted to be positioned adjacent to the plate, and a power operated member having` a predetermined movement and connected to the Wiper to draw it between the plate and the shoe bottom to pull and Wipe the upper under tension over the feather and against the channel lip of a lWelt shoe innersole on the last bottom.

16. ln a pulling-over and toe lasting machine. means to clamp an upper around the toe ot' a last and to give up stock when exccsstension is applied` means 'tor relatively moving the last and the clamping means to tension the upper, a flexible loop Wiper adapted to be applied around the toe, and means to operate the wiper to pull and Wipe the toe portion of the upper over the last bottom and to cause the clamping means to give up stock to said Wiper, said clamp being constructed and arranged to hold the Wiper closely upon the shoe during the overvriping operation.

A machine of the class described having, in con'ibination, means for clamping' the margin of an upper in outspread condition round the end of a shoe form, means for effecting relative movement ot said clamping means and the form to pull the upper, a flexible wiper member adapted to extend round the end of the tensioned upper, and means for pulling` said member rearwardly7 to wipe the upper over the bottom face of the itorm while the margin of the upper is retained under the control of said clamping means.

A machine of the cla-ss described having, in combination, means for clamping the margin of an upper in outspread condition round the end of a shoe form, grippers for engaging the upper at opposite sides of the form, means for eiifecting relative movement of the form and said clamping means `and grippers to pull the upper, means to cause i said grippers to overdraw the upper, a Hexible wiper member arranged to extend round the end ot the ripper, and means `for pulling said flexible member rearwardly to wipe the upper into lasted position round the end of the form.

In a machine of the class described, a flexible member adapted to extend round the end of a shoe form, means for pulling said member lengthwise of the form to draw an upper to the contour ot the form, and means for applying a binder round the end of the formi and fastening it to hold the upper in its shaped condition.

In a machine ofthe class described, a iiexible member adapted to extend round the end of a shoe form, power operated means for pulling said member lengthwise of the form to draw an upper to the contour of the form and for then holding it to permit a binder to be placed round the upper, and means automatically operative upon a subsequent starting of the machine to fasten the binder to the upper.

In a machine of the class described, the combination with shoe positioning means, of a flexible wiper member adapted to entend round the end ot theshoe, means for pulling said member lengthwise oiI the shoe to wipe the upper into lasted position, and means for applying and fastening a lasting binder to retain the upper in lasted position.

A machine of the class described having, in combination, means for pulling an upper over a shoe form and for working the upper inwardly about the form comprising a clamping device constructed to hold the marginal portion of the upper under yielding pressure while permitting it to slip as the upper is pulled over the form and as it is worked inwardly about the form, and means for operating said clamping device after the upper has been pulled over the form to relax the clamping pressure and permit the margin to slip more freely as it is worked inwardly about the form.

A machine of the class described having, in combination, power operated means for pulling an upper over a shoe form and for working the upper inwardly about the form comprising a clamping device construct-ed to control the marginal portion of the upper as it is pulled over the form and as it is worked inwardly, and mechanism automatically operative at a predetermined time in the cycle of the machine to relai; the clamping pressure on the margin of the upper to permit the upper to be worked inwardly about the form with the margin held under a reduced pressure.

A machine of the class described having in combination, power operated means for pulling an upper over a shoe form and for working the marginal portion of the upper inwardly over the bottom of the 'form comprising a clamping device constructed to hold the marginal portion of the upper under yielding pressure and to permit it to slip in both the pulling and the overworking operations, and mechanism automatically operative at a predetermined time in the cycle of the machine to relax the clamping pressure and permit the margin of the upper to slip more freely in the overworking operation than in the upper pulling operation.
52. A machine of the class described having, in combination, power operated means organized to pull an upper over a last and to come automatically to a stop with the upper held under tension, a eXible wiper arranged to extend about the toe portion of the last, and means automatically operative upon a subsequent starting of the machine to draw said wiper about the toe of the last for conforming the upper to the contour of the last.
