T 0 all'whom it may concern Be it known that I, PHILIP ALEXANDER. Jr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Churchville, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Binding Machines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use-the same.

This invention relates to an improved toy binding machine and one object of the invention is to provide a toy which will represent a grain binder and will have an improved mounting for a heater wheel so that a; belt which passes about the shaft of the beater wheel may be held tight and thus rotation of the beater wheel is insured when the toy is rolled along the ground.

Another object of the invention is to so construct the toy that power transmitting means will be provided which will be very simple in construction but very effective in operation.

Another object of the invention is to so construct this machine that power may be transmitted from one of the supporting wheels for the body portion of the machine.

Another object of the invention is to provide a toy of the character described which to a great extent will resemble a full size binding machine and will include a representation of a cutter board and conveyer apron.

This invention is illustrated'in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the toy.

This improved toy binding machine is provided with a body having a horizontal board. 1 and converging boards 2 and 3, supporting beams 4t, 5 and 6 being placed beneath the board with the supporting beams 41: and 5 at the outer edge portions of the boards 1 and 3 and the supporting beam 6 at the junction of the boards 2 and 3. These beams 4i, 5 and 6 will be secured to the side board 10 is secured to the outer side edge of the board 1 by fasteners which may pass into the supporting beam 4 and this is provided with an outstanding ledge 11 so that the'side board 10 and ledge 11 will resemble the usual cutter boards provided in binding machines. A. bracing strip 12-is provided for theboards 2 and 3and a handle 13 is socured to the inner face of the board 2 just below the bracing strip 12.

In order to mo-vably support the body, there has been provided an axlel i which extends beneath the board 1 with its outer end portion extending through the supporting beam 4 and out beyond the side board 10, a wheel 15 being rotatably mounted upon the extended end portion of the axle 14:. A guard strip 16 is secured to the side board 10 and rear end portion of the. supportincr beam 4: so that the wheel willlbe protecte when the toy is pushed along theground. At the inner end of the board 1, the axle is bent upwardly as shown at17 so that'it extends along the inner face of the board 2 for a short distance and is then bent to provide a horizontal section 18 which extends in a higher plane'than the portion of the axle beneath the board 1 and has its outer end embedded in the beam 5. Securing strips or brackets 19 are secured to the boards 1 and 2 and engage the axle as shown in Fig. 2 so that the axle will be securely held in place. A supporting wheel 20 which will be termed a driving wheel is mounted upon the elevated portion 18 of the axle and a pulley wheel 21 is also rotatably mounted on this portion of the axle and connected with the wheel 20 so that when the wheel 20 rotates, the pulley will rotate with the wheel.

The heater 22 extends above the board 1 and is provided with a shaft 23 which has its outer end portion provided with a pivot pin 2t mounted in an opening formed in the standard 25. The inner end portion of this shaft 23 is enlarged to provide a pulley element 26 and a pin 27 which forms a pivot pin for this end of the shaft for receiving the eye at the lower end of the spring hanger 28. This spring 28 is secured to the board 2 above the opening 29 by means of a suitable fastener 80 and thus the beater will be rotatably mounted and at the same time have its inner end portion yieldably held in a raised position so that when the inner end portion of the beater shaft is broughtdownwardly against the tension of the spring 28 to permit the belt 31 to be passed about the pulley 21, the spring will tend to draw the inner end portion of the beater shaft upwardly and will thus stretch the belt tight and insure proper transmission of rotary movement from the pulley wheel 21 to the beater. At 32 is shown a representation of a cord-holder with a piece of cord 33 passing from it and extending beneath the board 2 where it will be secured to the inner face ofthe board. a y

WYhen this device isin use, it is pushed along the ground and. the beater will be rotated above the board 1 which represents the .con'veyer platform usually provided to the rear of the cutter teeth, which teeth are represented by suitably painting the forward edge portion of the board 1 as shown at 3%. Of course, the device Will not cut the grass but since the grass will be caused to pass under the board 1, it will appear that cutting has taken place.

I claim 2.

A toy binder comprising a body having an opening,: a beater having a shaft rotatably mounted above the body and having one end portion. extending abovethe opening. supporting wheels for said body, a pulley turning with one of said wheels, a beltrpassing through the openings of said body and aboutsaid pulley and beater shaft, and resilient means drawing said beater ried bythe inclined board above the open-' ing, an. axle shaft, wheels upon the shaft, one wheel being positioned beneath the inclined board, a pulley upon the axle turning with the last mentioned wheel, a beater having a shaftrotatably mounted by said standard and spring hanger, and a belt pass ing about the pulley and beater. shaft and stretched tight by the action of said spring hanger. a i a a 3. A toy comprising a body lncludinga portion provided with an opening, a standard, a spring hanger carried by the body a above the opening, supporting wheels for the body, one wheel being positioned beneath the portion of the body having the opening formed therein, a pulley turning with the last mentioned wheel, a heater having a shaft rotatably mounted by said standard and said spring hanger, and a belt passing-through the opening and about the pul ley and beater shaft and stretched tight by the action of said spring hanger.
