Be it known that l, BERTHOM) JAHN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, in the county ot' Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in CoinsControlled Vending Machinea'ot which the following is a specification. y
My invention relates to improvements in coin-controlled vending machines, and the object oi' my improvement is simplicity and economy in construction and conveniency and eiiiciency in use. y

My improved coin-controlled vending machine is housed in' an elongated rectangular casing 10, provided with a cover 11 on the front, and is adapted to deliver goods 12 through an opening 13 in the left side wall 14, responsive to the insertion of a coin 15 in the coin-slot 16 in the top wall 17 and a downward pressure on the thumb-piece 18, the latter projecting laterally through a slot 19 in the upper part ot' the right side wall 20.
The goods 12 are supported in a column in a goods channel 21 in a magazine 22 of skeleton construction, separably mounted on the back wall 23 of the casing 10, the bo'ttom piece of the said goods 12 resting on the magazine bottom 24, in line with an opening 25 .in the left side wall 27 of the Specification of Letters Patent.

magazine, which opening 25 registers with the deliveryl opening 13 in the casing `10. The magazine bottom 24-has an vopening 28 extending along the middle portion for the greater portion of the length thereof that serves to permit the upper edge portion of the coin to engage with the bottom piece of goods for effecting the ejection of the same. The magazine 22 is provided adjacent the right side wall `29 with a division wall30 in spaced relation to the said right sidewall 29 so as to provide a vertical coin chutev 31 that is in line with the coin slot 16, the saidl coin chute 31 being continuous and open at the top and bottom. The upper rontportions 32 of the walls 29 and 30 of the coin chute 31 are cut away, as shown, to provide an operating space for a spring supported arm 33 that bridges the chute, which arm is normally spaced from the rear wall 34 of the chute by a distance that is appreciably smaller than the diameter of the coin l5. fis shown the bridge-arm is in the form of a laterally directed branch of a piece of spring wire, the body portion 35 of which extends along the outer side of the right wall 29 of the magazine and has the end remote from the said branch 33 secured to the said side wall 29. p
The magazine 22 is provided on the rear wall 36 with a plurality of ofl'set `lugs 37, shown as three in number, for cooperating with a set of channel lugs 38 on the rear wall 23 of the casing 10, for holding the magazine in the said casing 10.
The ejection of the goods `is effected by means of an operating lever 39 that is operatively connected to the thumb lpiece 18 through the medium of a cam platef40. The lever 39 is pivotally supported from the back wall 23 of the casing 10 by means of a pin 41 positioned a short distance below the upper end, leaving the upper end portion or upper arm 42 extending above the'v pivotal support. The saidl upper end portion 42 is operatively housed in a cam recess 43 in the cam plate 40, the said camcplate being-pivotally supportedfrom the back wall 23 by a pin 44.4 The thumb piece318 isy part of a thumb piece plate 45, the body portion 46 of which is pivotally supported by a pin 47 and is provided with a nose 48 for cooperating with the opposed bearing edge 49 of the cam plate 40.
The lever 39 has the body portion extending along the front face of the back 28, being held normally to the vright by a spring 50, and at thel lower end, between the bottom 2a of the magazine 22 and the coin platform 51, has a forwardly extending arm 52 provided with a coin recess 53, the said recess 53 being-'normally positioned in` registration with the lower end of the coin chute 31, to receive the coin 15 within the said coin recess 53. The lever 39 is made of a single piece of strip material of uniform width, bent to form the arm 52, the width being suflicient to provide for the slot 53 that serves as the coin recess. j
The coin platform 51 mentioned is fixedly supported from the back 23 of the casing 10 and serves as a rest along which the coin 15 slides as it is pushed along by the lever 39 during the operation of ejecting the goods 12, and corresponds in length almost though not entirely to the length of travel of the coin. Actually there is a space'between the right lend of the platform 51 and the right wall 20 of the casing 10 that is filled by a movable platform extension 511, which is provided for a special purpose to be de# scribed.
The said platform extension 54 is part of latch mechanism that it provided for engaging with the lower end of the lever 39 foi" the purpose of locking the said lever against movement away from the normal position under normal conditions and which latch mechanism is released by the weight of the coin when dropped on the said platform extension 54C, and comprises a shoulder 55 on a latch plate 56 for engaging with the said lever 89.
The latch plate 56 is pivotally mounted on the back 23 by a pivotal pin 57, and the body portion extends generally horizontally along the front face of the said back, on each side of the pivotal support. The part 58 at the left of the pivotal support serves asa counterweight tol keep the other end, with the platform extensionel and the shoulder 55m theelevated position under normal conditions. When in such normal position the lower end 59 of the bodypor tion of the lever 39 is just back of the shoulder 55, and is looked thereby against lateral. movement. When the `coin is delivered from the chuteBl to the platform extension 54, which is just below the chute,
the weight of the cointrips the latch and` releases the lever from engagement with the shoulder 55 and permits the free operation ofthe lever.
."Thus the latch mechanism as described prevents the operation of the lever when magazine that is slipped into place in a con-` venient manner. l

A vending machine comprising a casing having a goods channel, a coin chute, and a goods delivery opening, a lever having a recess for holding a `coin delivered from the said chute, and operative through the medium of the said coin to eject the goods from the said channel through the said opening, a platform for supporting the said coin during such movement, the said platform comprising a fixed portion for supporting the said coin during the major part of its travel, a latch device having a platform eX- tension for receiving the coin from the said chute, and the said latch device having a shoulder that normally locks the said lever` in non-operative position.
2. In a vending machine, a lever for ejecting goods from the said machine and having a recess for holding a coin, a fixed platform for supporting the said coinduring the major part of its movement, and a latch device for locking the said lever normally and operative to be released from the locking position by the said coin comprising a platform portion, positioned adjacent the said. fixed platform, that serves to receive and support the said coin before delivery to the said fixed platform.
3. ln a coin controlled vending machine,`
casing having a fixed rear wall, a goods ejecting lever fulcrumed on the said wall and having a relatively short power arm, a handle device for operating the said lever projecting through one of the side walls of the said casing, and an intermediate plate fulcrumed on the said rear wall, having one cam portion for cooperating with the said handle device and having a' second cam porf tion for cooperating with the said power arm of the lever.
