POWER UNIT FOR DRIVING ICE-CREAM FREEZERS AND OTHER APPLIANCES.
The invention is illustrated and described in this application, as applied to an ice cream freezer and. ice crusher, but it may be used with equal facility for driving other appliances.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a compact power unit of light weight and simple and inexpensive construction which may be readily set up and adjusted to drive devices of different dimen- 810115. The invention is described in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 isa side view of the invention as applied to an ice cream freezer and an ice crusher with certain parts broken away to more clearly illustrate the invention.
Figure 2 is aside elevation of the same with the ice cream freezer removed.
Thenumera-l 10 designates a supporting table for the power unit, which table is provided with the legs 11 having casters 12 to increase the portableness of the power unit.
Standards or. posts 13 are provided with base flanges 14 which are secured to the table 10 by means of fastening devices 15. A bed plate 16 is provided with openings through which the rods 13 are adapted to extend so that the bed plate 16 is slidably mounted upon said posts. About said openings the bed plate 16'is provided. with depending annular flanges 17 'provided with suitable openings for receiving set screws 18 whereby the bed plate may be'maintained in ada justed position upon the posts 13.
The bed plate 16 is provided near opposite ends with elevatedsurfaces 19 and 20.
- A'motor 21 is mounted on the surface 19 and 20by means of abracket 24 having a base Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 17, 1921. Serial No. 437,903.

flange which is secured to the bed plate 16 by the bolts 25. The gear casing is provided with a depending arm 26 formed with a threaded aperture 27 adapted to register with an aperture formed in the bracket 24 and a bolt 28 passes through said apertures and engages the threads 27 for clamping the arm 26 tightly to the bracket 24. It will be understood that the bracket 24 may be raised or lowered by the insertion of suitable plates or shims 29 between its flanged base and the surface 20, or in lieu thereof, a plurality of spaced apertures (not shown) may be formed in the bracket 24, either one of which may receive the bolts 28 for ad'usting the height of the gear housing. Slight adjustments laterally as well as in elevation can be obtained by movingthe gear casing pivotally' about the bolt 28 and then clamp 1 ing the arm 26 tightly to the bracket 24 for the shaft 37 of a driving motor 21, whereby the shafts 33 and 37 are operatively con nected. The shaft 3'? has also secured there'- to a driving pulley 38.
The shaft 34 is extended in opposite direction from'the gear casing 23' and carries at one end the small pulley 39 and has driving connection at the other end with the driving mechanism or gearing of the ice cream freezer 40, said gearing being of F-the usual form and located within the gear housing 41; the gear housing being clamped to the upper portion of the freezer by means, of the clamps '42. A large pulley 43 is secured to the shaft 34 and 1s connected by means of the belt 44 to the pulley 45 of an ice crusher 46, the latter being secured to the table 10 and provided with a chute 47 which projects beyond the side of the table, so that the crushed ice may be collected in a suitable In assembling themechanism and assuming that the posts 17 are properly placed and placed beneath'the exit of said spaced upon the table 10 and that the ice cream freezer and ice crusher 46 are located on the table. the bed plate 16 is then mounted upon the posts and adjusted to the desired position by means of the set screws 18. The motor 21 and bracket 24, with the gear casing 23, are then mounted or the bed plate. In case the shaft 34 does not align with the shaft of the ice cream freezer, the bed plate 16 may be given a finer adjustment and then a more delicate adjustment can be obtained by means of the shims or plates 29 or by pivotally moving the gear casing 23 about the bolt 28. The shaft 34 may now be secured to the driving shaft of the ice-cream freezer and the shaft 33 can be connected to the driving shaft 37 of the motor by means of the flexible coupling 36 36 By means of the belt 44 between the pulleys 43 and 45 the ice crusher is driven and this may be accomplished before the shaft 34 is connected to the driving mechanism of the ice cream freezer or subsequently.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1-- 1. A power unit of the class described comprising a supporting device having posts secured thereto, a bed plate slidably mounted on the posts. means for maintaining said bed plate on said posts in adjusted position, a motor and a bracket secured to the bed plate, a gear casin adjustably mounted on the bracket, shafts arranged substantially at right angles and journalled in said casing, gearing connecting said shafts within the casing, one of said shafts being connected to said motor and the other adapted to be directly connected to the driving mechanism of an ice cream freezer, tool or the like.
2. A power unit .of the class described comprising a table having posts secured thereto, a bed plate adapted to slide on said posts, means for maintaining said bed plate on said posts in adjusted position, a motor and a bracket secured to the bed plate, a gear casing adjustably mounted on the bracket, shafts arranged substantially at right angles and journalled in said casing, gearing connecting said shaftswithin the casing, a flexible coupling connecting the shaft of said motor to oneof said shaft-s the other of said shafts being adapted to be. connected at one end to the driving mechanism of an appliance such as an ice cream freezer, tool or the like, and having pulleys mounted thereon for driving other appliances of like character.
3. In a power unit of the class described, the combination of a portable supporting device having posts secured thereto, a bed plate slidably mounted on said posts, means for maintaining said bed plate on said posts in adjusted position, a motor and a transmission gear casing mounted on said bed plate. said casing having shafts journalled therein and projecting therefrom, gearing connecting said shafts within the casing, mounted on said shafts, and a motor connected to one of said shafts, the other of said shafts being adapted to be directly connected to the driving mechanism of a machine or appliance.
4. In a power unit of the class described, the combination of a bed plate, a motor and a bracket secured to said bed plate in spaced relation. a gear casing pivotally adjustable v on said bracket. means for locking the casing in adjusted position, shafts journalled in said casing and connected by gearing therein, a motor connected to one of said shafts and means whereby devices may be driven from either of said shafts.
In testimony whereof'I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
