PENCIL SHARPENER.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 6, 1922.
Application filed November 3, 1919. Serial No. 335,349.
To LZZZ whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, EDsoN R. WoLco'rT, a citizen of the vUnited States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Pencil Sharpener, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for sharpening pencils, and particularly to a sharpening device which is adapted tobe attached to a pencil so as to remain thereon while the pencil is in use, and permit sharpening of the pencil at any time without having to take the time for applying and removin,v the Sharpener.
`he accompanying drawings illustrate embodiments of my invention, and referring thereto:
Fig. l is a rear end view of a form of the device made in one piece;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation vof a form of the I invention provided with removable cutting blades or dies;
Fig. 4 is a section on line 4 4: in Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of one of the cutting blades or dies.
The form of the invention shown in Figs. l and 2 comprises a cylindrical body l adapted to fit on a pencil and having a conical extension 2 provided with cutting dies 3 and with slots 4 for discharge of the cuttings. Dies 3 are preferably serrated, as shown at 6, to enable them to more readilycut away the wood of the pencil, such serrations being preferably formed in the marmer of screw threads analogous to screw cutting dies, and said dies preferably terminate in knife portions or blades 5 adapted to trim the pencil point to the required degree of yfineness, said knife portions being separated sufficiently to enable the pencil point to project between and beyond them.
In using the device, the body l is slipped over one end of the pencil and the device then turned and pressed against the pencil end to cause the same to be cut conically to form the pencil point and sharpen the pencil. When th this manner,
e pencilhas been. sharpened in the device may be left in po- Vrequired extent.
sition, the pencil point protruding sufliciently from the device to permit use of the pencil; and when re-sharpening of the pencil isrequired the same can be effected by simplyV turning the device in contact with the pencil until the latter is cut away to the The pitch or screw thread character of the cutting serrations 6 tends to force the device onto the pencil as it is turned therein, and thereby facilitates the sharpening of the pencil, and the serrations also tend to hold the device in position on the pencil, while allowing its ready withdrawal when desired by turning it in the opposite direction.
he cutting blades or dies may be made detachable to enable replacement thereof, if desired. Thus, as shown in Figs. 3 tof5, the body 7 of the device, which is tubular and cylindrical to fit on the pencil, may have sockets 8 gage and grip the dies 9, said dies engaging at their outer ends in similar a ring l1. The dies in this case may be of similar construction to the die portions shown in Figs. l larly provided with terminal-*cutting knife portions, indicated at l2, and the operation of the device is the same as above described.
Vhat I claim is:
l. A lar body portion having conically extending cutting portions at one end thereof and adapted to cut the end of the pencil to conical shape, and said cutting portions having knife extensions adapted to cut the extreme point of the pencil and separated to permit the pencil point to project between and be yond the same. Y
2. A pencil Sharpener, as set forth in claim 1,'wherein said cutting portions are for-med with screw threads adaptedv to engage the cut portion of the pencil to force and hold the Sharpener onto the pencil.
3. A pencil socketsv l0 in and 2, and may be simi-kr pencil sharpener comprising a tubuf Sharpener comprising a tubu-` which are undercut to eni lar body adapted to, fit on the pencil and provided with conically extending cutters' adapted to cut the end of the pencil, said conically extending cutters having pointed serrations adapted to cut into the wood of ico the pencil so as to retainthe Sharpener in provided with conicelly extending cutting place on the pencil, and with cutting Ineens portions formed as Screw threads adapted to extending beyond said concally extending torce lamd hold the Sharpener onto the pencil. 10 cutters in position to sharpen the lead of ln testimony Whereot l have hereunto sub- 5 the pencil. scribed my naine this 25th day of October7 Il.
