specification of Letters Patent.
Patented une 6, 11 ,22.
flriginal application filed August 3, 1920, Serial No. 401,020. Divided and this application filed July 1.8,
- sota, have invented certain new and useful ratus on August rd, 1920,
Improvements in Retorts for Gas-Producing Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to gas producing apparatus and the main object is to provide an eticient and practical construction of retort or furnace for use in superheating straw or other gas producible materials in such an apparatus. Further-objects will be disclosed in the course of the following specification and are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the furnace, the greatein part of ,the outer shell being broken away for the purpose of illustrating the inner construction. 7
Fig. 2 is an enlarged section on the line 22 in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged section on the line 3-3 in Fig. 1.
This is a divisional application, the same being divided out from the application for patent filed by us for a gas producing appaber. No. 401,020.
Referring to the drawings by reference characters 11 designates a chamber in which the is generated and which is suspended in a cylindrical furnace 12, said furnace being provided with a grate 13, fire and ash doors 14 and 15, respectively, and an exhaust stack 16. The furnace is also provided with a guard 17, which supports the grate 13, and two or more oppositely directed horizontal partitions 18, 19 which serve to distributeand more eificiently utilize the heat from the fire on the grate, which heat thus passes around the chamber 11 as shown by the arrows in Figs. 1 and 2. The bottom and lower side portions of the chamber are considerably thicker than its upper part (see Fig. 3) so that it will he more uniformly heated. A snugly fitting bucket 20, having lifting hooks 21, is positioned within the chamber 11.
The chamber 11 is provided at its tor with an annular rim 22 which has a bea 23 and a series of spaced perforated cars 24:. A cover 25 fits on the rim 22, within the ears 24 and has an annular recess adapted to fit over the head 23. An upwardly extending Serial No. 4853738.
As the gas is generated'in the retort, as above constructed, it escapes through a pipe 38 and into a cooler (notshown) and from there is purified and stored in tanks, as indicated by the application for patent above referred to. g z
It is understood that various modifications -may be made in the design and structure of this retort, provided, however, that such modifications come within the spirit and scope'oi the appended claims. Having now therefore fully shown and described our invention, what we claim to be new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. In an apparatus oi the class described,
a furnace, a gas generating receptacle suspendedin the upper part thereof, said receptaclehaving its bottom and lower wall portion of greater thickness than'the upper wall p01 ion, and a bucket adapted to fit snugly in the lower part of said receptacle.
2. In an apparatus of the class described, a furnace, a gas generating receptacle suspended in the upper part thereof, said receptacle having its l ofiiom and lower wall portion of greater fluckness than the upper wall portion of the receptacle, amf a bucket .por'tion of the receptacle.
I 3. In an apparatus of the class described, a furnace, :1 gas generating receptacle suspended in the upper part thereof, said re ceptacle having its bottom and lower well portion of greater thickness than. the upper wall portion of the recepizzcle, a bucket adapted to fit snugly in the lower part of said receptacle, and upwardly extending hooked bars secured to said bucket and positioned adjaceni, the upper partof said recepteele.
