INVENTOR- L BY M A'ITORNEY UNKTEQ STATES HARRY GUTMAN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
WRENCH.
:iaiaasc.
Application filed July 22, 1921.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, HARRY GUTMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification. c
This invention relatives to wrenches, and an object of the invention is to provide a wrench which embodies the advantages of a monkey and pipe wrench in a single unitary construction, adapting the wrench to be used for gripping, flator curved surraces.
Another object of this invention is to provide a wrench which embodies a rigid jaw, and a movable jaw, said movable jaw being held in adjusted positions by means of a pair of substantially wedge-shaped gripping members carried within the movable jaw and releasable to permit adjustment of the movable aw.
A further object of his invention is to provide a wrench which is simple in construction, and one which may be finished all over to provide an attractive appearing wrench, as well as one the construction of which will permit it to be forged and thereby stand excessive strains.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detailed description and in the accompanying drawings wherein:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the improved wrench having parts broken away.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary, longitudinal section through the wrench.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a plate used in the wrench structure.
. Fig. 4- is a prospective view of one of the gripping pawls.
Fig. 5 is a detail section through the improved wrench taken'on the line 55 of F ig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings. the improved wrench comprises a shank 1, which has a handle 2 on one end thereof and a rigid aw 3 upon its other end. The jaw 23 projects laterally in both directions from the shank 1 providin a smooth gripping surface land a serratec gripping surface 5.. The gripping surfaces 4 and 5 co-act with corresponding gripping surfaces 6 and 7 respectively which are carried by the movable jaw 8. The movable jaw 8 js Specification of Letters Patent. Patented May 30, 1922.
Serial No. 486,816.
provided with a recess 9 in one face thereof and with aligning openings 10 through which the shank 1 extends. The gripping surface carrying portions of the jaw 8 extend laterally from the face of the jaw 8, a distance equal to the thickness of the closure plate 11, which plate is secured to the jaw 8 in any suitable manner, such as by rivets 19. to enclose the gripping pawls 13 which are placed in the recess 9, one upon each side of the shank 1. The edges of the shank 1 are serrated or knurled as shown at Hand the surfaces 15 of the gripping pawls which face the knurled edges of the shank are also knurled to provide firm gripping engagement between the gripping pawls 13 and the shank 1 to hold the jaw 8 in adjusted positions along the shank.
The pawls 13 are urged lnto gripping engagement with the edges of the shank 1 by spiral springs 15 which engage the inner ends 16 of the pawls. Pins 17 extend into suitable recesses or openings 18 formed in the gripping pawls, through slots 19 in the plate 11 and are carried by a slidable plate 20.
The pawls 13 are received as shown at 21 to receive flanges 22 formed on the pins 17 for preventing the pins from moving longitudinally out of position, The openings 18 are slightly larger than the pins 17 to permit limited releasing movement of the pawls 13.
The slidable plate is mounted against the outer surface of plate 11 and may be moved toward the handle 2 to compress or tension the springs 10 and release the gripdifferent relations and, therefore, I do not desire to be limited in any manner except as set forth in the claim hereunto appended.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is: i
In a wrench, a shank having portions of its edges roughened, a movable jaw on said shank, grippingpawls carried Within said movable jaw and positioned one upon each side of said shank, said gripping pawls provided With roughened surfacesfor gripping engagement With the roughened surfaces of said shank, and springs within said movable jaw and engaging said pawls for normally
